maybe someone else has already talked abhout it so i apologize, but: as someone who has never touched a xenoblade game, will i like xc2? who are they for? i sometimes get into jrpgs but it isn't consistent. i might pick this one up but i really have no frame or reference? ditto for octopath traveler, which i remember getting a lot of praise in this thread for the demo, but not as much for the main game? help my ilg, i trust only u

weebs, mostly

i loved xenoblade 2 but you definitely need to either enjoy shonen anime nonsense or have a high tolerance for it. beyond that the draw is it's got insanely good environment design and music, a weirdo multi-layered MMO-esque combat system, and a story that's clearly from the same mind as xenogears

octopath traveler is more of a throwback to the snes/psx era sprite-based jrpgs and has more general appeal

ciderpress, Thursday, 6 December 2018 21:51 (five years ago) link

octopath traveler is fine, it perfectly serves its intention of slavishly recreating a certain type of gaming experience with some of the worst or most frustrating parts smoothed out but if you arent brain damaged by a childhood of grinding for meaningless quest items in poorly translated jrpgs i dont know how "fun" it would be to play

(° . ° )― (Lamp), Thursday, 6 December 2018 21:53 (five years ago) link

i love danganronpa and persona so animu bullshit is fine. trying to figure out if i will get into xc2 is tricky tho, the vibe i am getting from watching videos is like... "tales of" or new star oceans or phantasy star online, games that never "stuck" for me. am i way off?

xp i am brain damaged by said things so octo seems ok for me

teen heartthrob Pacey Winger (Will M.), Thursday, 6 December 2018 21:55 (five years ago) link

tales of is a good comparison for the general style of anime writing it is but the combat is way different and the world design is more detailed and alien than tales. xenoblade combat isn't really like anything else in the JRPG space so it's really hard to know if you'd like it before trying it, but FF12 is a bit similar at least on the surface level? you have autoattacks and abilities on cooldowns like in an MMO and then there's elaborate element-based combo chains.

ciderpress, Thursday, 6 December 2018 22:13 (five years ago) link

i think lamp's selling octopath short in that its combat system is way more engaging and puzzley than any of the games it's calling back to

ciderpress, Thursday, 6 December 2018 22:27 (five years ago) link

Octopath Traveller and XC2 sort of have similar concepts for their combat systems, in that the objective is to do enough of certain moves that do a little damage but make your enemy more vulnerable so that you can then do other moves to do lots of damage at critical moments. In XC2 it's in real-time and substantially more complicated.

Play Xenoblade Chronicles 2 if doing combos to do other combos to do other combos to do the ultimate combo and then starting over sounds like fun to you (it is fun)

(there are literally five layers of combos)

The story of XC2 is bananaballs and the combat is like playing extremely slow Dance Dance Revolution

octopath gets docked a full point though for not giving exp to benched characters in 2018. even dragon quest does this now!

Apparently Doom just got another big patch. You've got to respect Panic Button for applying new porting techniques this long after the fact. Most people (myself included) were pretty satisfied with the last big patch, so the fact that the group is apparently still making tweaks and improvements no one was really asking for is laudable. Anyway, after I beat Dark Souls I still need to finish Doom, but I guess I have to relearn the controls first.

i started the octopath demo, and i picked the hunter. everyone talks so embarrassingly. like they ran regular english through an "ye-olde-ify!" bot or something. Is it like this for every path or does the hunting village just talk weird? I hate to say this might be a dealbreaker but jesus it's annoying and bad to read

teen heartthrob Pacey Winger (Will M.), Thursday, 13 December 2018 16:38 (five years ago) link

haha Dragon Quest Builders is like that too but I find it endearing, also if I wanted to read very much I wouldn't be playing a video game but I dunno

L'assie (Euler), Thursday, 13 December 2018 16:40 (five years ago) link

After you get out of Haannit’s chapter 1, everybody else talks normal, without archaic verb endings

I have measured out my life in coffee shop loyalty cards (silby), Thursday, 13 December 2018 16:45 (five years ago) link

yeah the hunter and her starting town are the only ppl in the game that talk like that

ciderpress, Thursday, 13 December 2018 18:35 (five years ago) link

dunno if the Japanese script had some comparable archaic language there or if it's just an invention of Nintendo's loc team

ciderpress, Thursday, 13 December 2018 18:41 (five years ago) link

i have no idea but like i am 99% sure these words did not have these suffixes in ye oldene daysen

teen heartthrob Pacey Winger (Will M.), Thursday, 13 December 2018 18:46 (five years ago) link

good to know it's only there though. it's also hilariously inconsistent, there were like 10 lines in one conversation where they just dropped the oldey-talk and then just... picked it up again

so yeah, this localization is very nostalgic for an older time, is what i am sayin

I backed that on kickstarter iirc but never played b/c playing games on PC is the pits so I'll pay again for it now, a friend of mine loves that game, to the tune of like 100 hrs

there's no wishlist option on the eshop?

na (NA), Monday, 17 December 2018 17:11 (five years ago) link

there is, it's kind of small text and is a text link instead of a button so easily missable

ciderpress, Monday, 17 December 2018 17:15 (five years ago) link

also is really only useful for communicating with yourself, there's no way for anyone to buy a game for you off it.

oh yeah that's all I ever use wishlist for anyway, as a sale tracker

ciderpress, Monday, 17 December 2018 17:17 (five years ago) link

is it in the browser version or just in the console version? i can't find any option like that in the browser version.

na (NA), Monday, 17 December 2018 17:18 (five years ago) link

oh not sure about the browser version I've only used the console one

ciderpress, Monday, 17 December 2018 17:27 (five years ago) link

in which it's right under the buy button on game pages

ciderpress, Monday, 17 December 2018 17:28 (five years ago) link

hmm ok thanks. hopefully i don't forget these games i'm interested in before i get home.

na (NA), Monday, 17 December 2018 17:29 (five years ago) link

This site says it tracks deals, i'm gonna try it out and see how it goes. the fact that it's already got a specific canada deals section has me excited (as someone in canada. i assume it also has these for other regions)

hopefully i don't get 500 emails a week

teen heartthrob Pacey Winger (Will M.), Monday, 17 December 2018 19:03 (five years ago) link

that's useful thanks

ciderpress, Monday, 17 December 2018 19:11 (five years ago) link

tbf i get 500 emails a week from Enterprise even though i only rented a car from them once and i've unsubscribed to their list several dozen times. so some of those emails might as well be about potential Switch deals

I've seen lots of good things about Into the Breach, but I couldn't stand FTL - too fiddly and chore-like - is his any different?

I’m waiting for Mineko’s Night Market to play a shopowning RPG

I have measured out my life in coffee shop loyalty cards (silby), Sunday, 23 December 2018 06:17 (five years ago) link

i did try moonlighter. i played for about...5-6 hours. it's a great idea for a game, switching between dungeon crawling and selling loot at the shop, and i'd love to see the next version of it. or another take on it from a different studio. unfortunately i thought the mechanics of both sides of the game were pretty shallow. admittedly i got a little addicted to it when i first played it, because the structure of the game lends itself to a "one more day!" kind of thing. but after i took a break from it for a few days i had no desire to go back again.

Karl Malone, Sunday, 23 December 2018 06:26 (five years ago) link

it looked like a kinda bland recettear clone so i didn't try it
