agreed that it rules a lot. maybe people are leaving it off cause it's technically from last year?

it should be high on every list.

big crime for a SPECIAL WHATEVER (voodoo chili), Thursday, 6 December 2018 18:34 (five years ago) link

is there another thread for posting your own 100 ?

single bed mentality (||||||||), Thursday, 6 December 2018 18:42 (five years ago) link

we usually wait for the ballot thread after the EOY poll results, right?

big crime for a SPECIAL WHATEVER (voodoo chili), Thursday, 6 December 2018 18:46 (five years ago) link

xp no, there's only a 500 thread, and everyone is barred from posting until they find 400 more things to list

j., Thursday, 6 December 2018 18:46 (five years ago) link

not sure what the point of that Stereogum quote is tbh

resident hack (Simon H.), Thursday, 6 December 2018 18:53 (five years ago) link

we decided to make a radical, heretofore unprecedented stand and vote for the records we liked the most!!

resident hack (Simon H.), Thursday, 6 December 2018 18:54 (five years ago) link

The Agrimonia is the only one I've heard too, and I agree it's really good

imago, Thursday, 6 December 2018 18:56 (five years ago) link

Simon, you cannot deny that there's a certain amount of drudgeful consensus around a lot of these lists

imago, Thursday, 6 December 2018 18:57 (five years ago) link

simon, you cannot deny that this thing i complain about all the time exists

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Thursday, 6 December 2018 18:57 (five years ago) link

j/k i'm with you, that stereogum parenthetical was super dumb

Some day someone sager than I will compose a proper treatment of How Organisations Decide On The Best Culture (Clue: It's Partially Their Listening Habits)

imago, Thursday, 6 December 2018 18:58 (five years ago) link

oh i get it we should leave culture up to lj

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Thursday, 6 December 2018 18:58 (five years ago) link

I said someone sager! I'm too partisan

imago, Thursday, 6 December 2018 19:00 (five years ago) link

I wonder if they considered vetoing the Mournful Congregation album because a few people outside the Stereogum offices heard it.

resident hack (Simon H.), Thursday, 6 December 2018 19:00 (five years ago) link

lol

imago, Thursday, 6 December 2018 19:01 (five years ago) link

has George Clanton showed up on any of these lists yet b/c he seems like a good candidate for one of those low-key breakthrough artists with a suddenly hip sound

I agree, I've noticed a lot of people base their favorite music on music they've listened to

The Poppy Bush AutoZone (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 6 December 2018 19:08 (five years ago) link

Délétère's Gregorian parodies are my jam but the album itself comes with disappointingly bland songwriting. And it's overlong.

pomenitul, Thursday, 6 December 2018 19:16 (five years ago) link

Nice vinyl factory albums list too.

The Ebo Taylor rekkid is fantastic.

really wanted to like that but it's kinda unlistenable to me

The Poppy Bush AutoZone (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 6 December 2018 20:56 (five years ago) link

damn this is right up my alley lol

resident hack (Simon H.), Thursday, 6 December 2018 21:19 (five years ago) link

confession: nothing on that stereogum metal list really made me sit up and pay attention, lol

imago, Thursday, 6 December 2018 21:45 (five years ago) link

their #1 has quite a bit of promise maybe

imago, Thursday, 6 December 2018 21:45 (five years ago) link

resident hack (Simon H.), Thursday, 6 December 2018 21:51 (five years ago) link

imago, Friday, 7 December 2018 00:04 (five years ago) link

i like the vinyl factory list, from that list i hadn't heard farao, martyn, or insolito universo, all great records

i'm moving towards just spending december only listening to 2018 releases, god there are so many good ones, at this point i'm ready to just delete all the stuff from before 2018, who needs it?

dub pilates (rushomancy), Friday, 7 December 2018 02:11 (five years ago) link

it's interesting. I also really like the Musicophilia list

Dan S, Friday, 7 December 2018 03:04 (five years ago) link

kinda surprised My Trust in You by Marc Baron and Lucio Capece (Erstwhile Records) didn't make any of these lists (WIRE?) ... it's one of the best Erstwhile albums I've heard in a while.

braunld (Lowell N. Behold'n), Friday, 7 December 2018 04:24 (five years ago) link

need to hear that, going to have to make an Erstwhile order, that and the Áine O'Dwyer/Graham Lambkin record that meaulnes mentioned above sound really intriguing

D-40 has been going down this pedantic wormhole since, like, "Still Tippin'." Ignore.

― 5th Ward Weeaboo (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 5 December 2018 17:39 (two days ago) Permalink

This is such a bad post. I’m not pedantic I just think it’s obnoxious when critics are exposed to a record but only pick up on it when it becomes a Social Movement. By this logic a bunch of critics should have had faneto this year

I literally saw Ella mai perform a then-released “bood up” whole opening for Kehlani in mid 2017. Her album was produced by dj mustard and had a ton of streams, this isn’t obscure

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Friday, 7 December 2018 10:30 (five years ago) link

And we certainly wouldn't want to be obnoxious, would we?

Matt DC, Friday, 7 December 2018 10:33 (five years ago) link

god is a woman" over "no tears" or "breathin"? ok

"god is a woman" is such a bad song

― jolene club remix (BradNelson), Thursday, December 6, 2018 10:28 AM (yesterday) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

"No Tears Left to Cry" is a victim of being released earlier in the year and/or Ariana leaning into gigantic meme status later in the year, but it's the best single by a mile

― aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Thursday, December 6, 2018 10:57 AM (yesterday) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

I like god is a woman! At least musically, I haven’t given it much thought conceptually. But that two note guitar is such a dope hook to me, and I think the main melody is fire

No tears left to cry I kNoW was a critical smash due in part to its uk garage adjacent sound but to me it’s structurally kind of underwhelming... or maybe structurally overwhelmed... like a good idea that isn’t quite executed to its full effect ... but i guess that’s what would make it a good critical record in that the surface affect is novel in pop rn and its skeleton has a kind of unconventional shapelessness that, once it wasn’t a Huge hit, makes it feels slightly like a failure to me in some way

Thank u will obviously be the iconic single off the project and I haven’t really decided how I feel about it... that seems like a victory of concept over songcraft (god is a woman) or aesthetic (no tears)
