In the UK, old people often stand for God Save The Queen when it plays after The Queen’s Christmas broadcast, and Christmas lunch cannot begin until the broadcast is over.

"I started Black Rifle Coffee Company to provide a high-quality, roast-to-order coffee to the pro-2A and veteran communities. Between deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, I worked to refine both my coffee roasting skills and my firearms skills."

A guy I work with, who's a kind of *Del Boy ducker and diver and is right into his coffee - drinking it, buying it, selling it - showed me this company's website once. This is the same guy who, on hearing I was visiting my family in Scotland, tried to persuade to make a diversion to go and collect some coffee he was thinking of buying - I will not be your coffee mule I told him.

Well, the Scots I know are happy to stand if it will help them throw a variety of missiles at the television during the GSTQ bit. Otherwise, there’s always Channel 4.

Hastings, our tapes-and-CDs store, used to play the National Anthem every day...

... at 9:55 pm while they were trying to close the place.

pplains, Thursday, 6 December 2018 21:39 (five years ago) link

there are a couple mission bbqs in my area and i will not go to one or eat the food they piss me off

i need to talk about backing into parking spaces. i fucking hate it. it makes me so mad when people do it. but i was thinking about something. my gym is in a place that has a parking garage. the parking garage does not have angled spots, people drive like maniacs inside it. it has terrible hairpin turns and no one uses the round mirrors. they just blast around them. if you are parked and a car larger than you parks next to you, backing out is a russian roulette game. you have to do it very slowly and even then...is this why everyone seems to back in in this garage? i still won't do it.

also it is hard to drive forward into a space to parallel park. because your back wheels don't steer. in my opinion.\

pplains, Friday, 7 December 2018 04:00 (five years ago) link

I don't understand the difficulty in driving into a parallel parking space? As long as there is nothing on the curb that you would hit, you can pretty much skim to overhang the curb until the back wheels pull in.

Yerac, Friday, 7 December 2018 04:36 (five years ago) link

All these people at Mission BBQ = "these fucking losers".

Yerac, Friday, 7 December 2018 04:38 (five years ago) link

I have a dream of a world where there will be Mission BBQ, but it'll be a corny cosplay hoot that people go to just to mock, like Medieval Times.

Brian Oenophile (Ye Mad Puffin), Friday, 7 December 2018 09:33 (five years ago) link

Found myself taking a trolley from the stack yesterday and wondering why it wasn't pulling right as i took it around teh supermarket. It dipped massively as i put things in the front of it. So I took it back to get a new one. Looked at the wheels and realised that one was flat on one side.
I showed one of the managers, but I have a nasty feeling that it just went back out.
Not sure exactly how it had gotten int that state. Is that normal wear and tear plus age?

I mean don't they regularly inspect their entire fleet of trolleys? You don't get that kind of trouble from shopping baskets and they don't take up as much space in shopping aisles.

& would hate to be a non able bodied person picking up that trolley and trying to wheel it around.

Stevolende, Friday, 7 December 2018 10:39 (five years ago) link

Not too long ago I got myself a cart from a parking lot to bring to the store, thinking I was helping them out. Something was wrong and the wheels just weren't moving, so I essentially had to drag it all the way to the entrance. When I got there a kid working at the store told me, oh, that cart is broken. So why was it just sitting out in the parking lot if you knew it was broken, I asked him? Shrug.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 7 December 2018 12:47 (five years ago) link

THis was one of those shopping basket trolley things which is the main choice within the shop. & you mainly need to go to the queues to get them. Which would indicate somebody had just had to take the same one around.
Really not sure what does that wheel thing though if it is a gradual thing or a one time accident or what. Wheel looked ok on one side but totally flat on the other.

Just wondering what would be heavy enough in the shop for it to be a one off. Both heavy enough and not consciously heavy enough for somebody to go outside and get a wire larger trolley to take the weight.

Stevolende, Friday, 7 December 2018 13:29 (five years ago) link

I've been hating everything for so long I don't remember what I've complained about before but current IA: When only one door is open in a double doorway and you barrel into the locked one with your arm out and barely avoid slamming your face into the door.

There's more Italy than necessary. (in orbit), Friday, 7 December 2018 14:58 (five years ago) link

I really, really hate when there are double doors (even multiple ones at stores) and instead of people opening their own door they all wait to go through the ONE that someone has opened themselves.

Yerac, Friday, 7 December 2018 15:01 (five years ago) link

I am getting absurdly angry right now thinking of it.

Yerac, Friday, 7 December 2018 15:03 (five years ago) link

that's perfectly rational anger imo

Yeah, hate that. xps to IO

In my high school the double doors down by the band hall were like that, and one day a custodian or administrator switched the locked-unlocked order. One guy was horsing around and ran for the doors after doing something dumb and teenage, and put his hand through the glass of the door he thought was unlocked. Carved him up bad, including a lot of nerve damage.

WmC, Friday, 7 December 2018 15:06 (five years ago) link

I am kind of an asshole about it. If there is a dynamic where a stream of people are entering in through door A and a line of people are leaving through door B and for some crazy reason the door B line chooses to not open their door and are waiting to squeeze in through door A...omg. I see this all the time. Even though I am going in the opposite direction I will open their door and say "THIS DOOR OPENS TOO."

Yerac, Friday, 7 December 2018 15:08 (five years ago) link

You're about to go through a door where you have to scan an i.d. card. There are two people ahead of you. The first person scans their card and pushes the door open, holding it for the person behind. The second person refuses to touch the door and slides their body around to avoid the door after the first person lets go of it. The door closes right in front of you and locks. Then you have to dig out your i.d. to unlock the door and ride the elevator up with the asshole who wouldn't hold the door for one second.

President Keyes, Friday, 7 December 2018 15:09 (five years ago) link

This might make some sense if you were worried about letting random weirdos into the building, but you work in the office across the hall and see me 5 times a day.

I used to profile nicely dressed white men who would try to follow me through the swipe door at work (supposedly our floor had better coffee) just to annoy them.

Oh, Matuidi. Anglophones, fuck the way you mangle French stress and accent, it is entirely unnecessary, just think of him as Mattwee Dee rather than Matt Tweedy, grr.

Anatol_merklich, for a long time my wife and I were both slightly puzzled by USian sportscasters speaking of the promising basketball team from Yukon. You know, the Canadian territory?

Ahem.

Took us years to realize they were discussing the University of Connecticut (UConn).

ANYTHING in shops that doesn't have a price on it or very near it.
Beauty counters in department stalls are terrible, but also supermarkets, other random stores, and Ikea can be really frustrating trying to find out what something is and what it costs.

kinder, Saturday, 8 December 2018 22:05 (five years ago) link

*department stores

kinder, Saturday, 8 December 2018 22:05 (five years ago) link

I remember there used to be an adage for posh shops. If you need to know the price then you couldn't afford it anyway.

But that's got to do with money and trade both being vulgar and non-u.
So really not very helpful to anybody budget conscious which I would assume was most people.

Really hate it myself when there is no price visible. Liked it when things would all get a price tag attached ro at least a label sticker.

Stevolende, Saturday, 8 December 2018 23:05 (five years ago) link

When the local Target opened 20 years ago they had price scanners at various locations on the floor that anyone could use. It was great but I can't remember the last time one of them worked.
