Literally every single one of their post-hiatus albums has been EOY list fodder...There is nothing exceptional about the treatment this record's gotten AFAICT
Absolutely true. They've been critical darlings for a decade, and I'm honestly kind of impressed that they've managed to thread the needle and lure in both metal writers and "I don't know shit about metal but this is the best metal album of the year" indie schmendricks. I still think they suck, though.

you clown yourself for spending any time thinking about press releases imo
You clown yourself by pretending that shit doesn't matter. I've argued for years that critics' polls should include four categories: Artist, Title, Label, and Publicist.
― grawlix (unperson), Wednesday, 5 December 2018 18:35 (five years ago) link
I have no idea who this band is, but, like, every press release tells a story about stuff happening in the artist's life, singling out any one band for it is kind of like singling out a person for breathing air. (there's a point to be made about how this is sometimes gruesome/commodifying for the musician, but that point is not here)

yes you certainly have argued this for years

using your whole fucking thing about press releases to second guess other ppl's enjoyment of the band/record is fucking stupid pretty boring and bad though
― jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 5 December 2018 18:42 (five years ago) link
i probably should've edited that post more
― jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 5 December 2018 18:43 (five years ago) link
There's a fair amount of good doom out there, but Yob are boring and bad.
what a shitty opinion

I think i read a Ben Ratliff thing that I always think about, w/r/t their interplay. They really feel synced into each other. They have melody and soar. This is maybe my third fave Yob record.
― 5th Ward Weeaboo (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 5 December 2018 18:46 (five years ago) link
i just put on the new yob and i can sorta immediately tell why it's special? they're really locked in and dynamic and there are good melodies on top of it
― jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 5 December 2018 18:48 (five years ago) link
I mean, this is a lot of what I love about Kranky-era Low, but it's just louder.

i mean i'm essentially repeating what whiney said but. otm! xp

Looking at these lists is like looking at current squad list of Turkish football clubs on wikipedia except with more Josephines than Cenks. No sign of Djourou yet, however
― saer, Wednesday, 5 December 2018 18:50 (five years ago) link
just wanna note that the break in Yob releases was not exactly a "hiatus", more like Mike's attempt to start a totally new band that became a total clusterfuck cuz of some legalistic jerks:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middian
and I think he just gave up at that point and went back to Yob, but not totally sure. I was roommates with the Middian bass player for a while and heard abt most of this as it was going down.

I mean, I will grant unperson that, yes, T E H N A R R A T I V E has granted them maybe a little more coverage/focus then they would get otherwise, but they are easily the best non-Sleep doom band of the last 15 years so who gives a shit
― 5th Ward Weeaboo (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 5 December 2018 18:56 (five years ago) link
Having just heard the new Evoken, I'll take those guys over anything by Yob or Sleep.
― pomenitul, Wednesday, 5 December 2018 18:59 (five years ago) link
the new evoken is great but imo we can have it all
― jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 5 December 2018 18:59 (five years ago) link
we can have Mournful Congregation too! doom is a big heavy church
― resident hack (Simon H.), Wednesday, 5 December 2018 19:01 (five years ago) link
Sleep sucks too, FTR. (So does Neurosis, just to complete the everyone-is-wrong-but-me trifecta.)

cool so there was never any chance you would like yob, thanks for contributing

Aside from Evoken, a few doom and doom-ish bands that have released albums more deserving of attention than Yob's or Sleep's this year: Messa, Argonavis, Hamferð, Hooded Menace, Churchburn, Mournful Congregation.
― pomenitul, Wednesday, 5 December 2018 19:05 (five years ago) link
That Messa album is great.
― grawlix (unperson), Wednesday, 5 December 2018 19:06 (five years ago) link
i agree that Sleep isn't that great. Sleep is a merch-sales operation at this point.
Yob is fucking great, though. Whiney is right about the melody and the soaring. and Mike's one of the best vocalists going, in any genre. they're great recorded, and they're mind-blowing live.
did they get more coverage because of the near-death experience? maybe a couple pieces, but nothing major. everyone writes about a new Yob record ... and with good reason.
― alpine static, Wednesday, 5 December 2018 19:09 (five years ago) link
glad this thread has had a metal takeover anyway
― imago, Wednesday, 5 December 2018 19:11 (five years ago) link
i mean they could've kept his medical issues under wraps and done just fine. Yob doesn't need to cook up a hook for press, c'mon.
― alpine static, Wednesday, 5 December 2018 19:11 (five years ago) link
Scheidt's voice does absolutely nothing for me.
― pomenitul, Wednesday, 5 December 2018 19:12 (five years ago) link
i also think it's worth noting that Mike does a good job - whether you're reading his words or you have a chance to talk to him about it - of passionately and precisely explaining how his experience affected and fueled Our Raw Heart. like, it's *part of the story* of the music, it's not just in the press release because it sounds cool.
― alpine static, Wednesday, 5 December 2018 19:17 (five years ago) link
yob have great album art

"x do/does nothing for me" is of course a perfectly fine statement, my side-eye only gets raised when it's associated with "here's a list of similar bands who are OBVIOUSLY superior based on arcane personal criteria"

I know you all like "This is America" because it's feels like a statement or something but I'm still waiting for someone to give "Baby Shark" the respectful nod it deserves. The actual zeitgeist song of the year.

“This is America” is all about the music video, and it’s a brilliant one... top 10 of the decade even. But, song of the year? To each its own but I don’t think it’s even the best song on his album.
