would've preferred if lucy had been no. 1 on the songs list of course, i'm with everyone who thinks "this is america" is a video, not a song xp

had never heard of Hatis Noit before, but that one's pretty nice

Compared to last year's tail-end scramble, I did a better job of keeping up with new releases in 2018, but I still feel overwhelmed whenever I see a new list come out. FOMO's a bitch.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 5 December 2018 16:40 (five years ago) link

Did not expect to see 'Pat Earrings' (a line that will make zero sense to anyone outside the UK) on that FACT list.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 5 December 2018 17:00 (five years ago) link

yeah cover of that is hilarious

article actually lists it as 'pet earrings', think it's by a us writer?

xp amazing

nxd, Wednesday, 5 December 2018 17:09 (five years ago) link

It's been a jam of mine all year but the rapping is probably the worst thing about it.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 5 December 2018 17:10 (five years ago) link

beautiful cover.

calzino, Wednesday, 5 December 2018 17:12 (five years ago) link

boo’d up might have come out in 2017 but it’s def a 2018 track. D-40 probably right tho

funny how these things work. culture II feels like it came out an age ago. might as well have been a 2017 record

single bed mentality (||||||||), Wednesday, 5 December 2018 17:32 (five years ago) link

D-40 has been going down this pedantic wormhole since, like, "Still Tippin'." Ignore.

Complex: "But Earl treats the lo-fi nature of the process in the same way that Guided by Voices did in their heyday"

lol was not expecting that one

rob, Wednesday, 5 December 2018 17:46 (five years ago) link

Complex list is decent but the ordering is bonkers to me.

Also, am I alone in thinking that the Tierra Whack album seems to be getting more shine than it deserves? Maybe I'll revisit it today but I didn't really like it much when I first listened.

husked, tonal wails (irrational), Wednesday, 5 December 2018 17:49 (five years ago) link

I agree. As a calling-card EP it shows a lot of promise, but aoty is a big stretch

rob, Wednesday, 5 December 2018 17:51 (five years ago) link

Vinyl Factory list is awesome. Love their taste.

TW probably my favourite rap album of the year tbf

imago, Wednesday, 5 December 2018 17:55 (five years ago) link

Glad to see the Yob record place so low on the Noisey list. Yob sucks, and I don't understand why so many critics worship them. Sure, the dude almost died and that's a good feature hook, but it doesn't make their music interesting.

― grawlix (unperson), Wednesday, December 5, 2018 5:59 AM (three hours ago)

O_O

alpine static, Wednesday, 5 December 2018 17:58 (five years ago) link

tbf I've never got Yob either

imago, Wednesday, 5 December 2018 17:59 (five years ago) link

tbf they're one of the best heavy bands on the planet

alpine static, Wednesday, 5 December 2018 18:00 (five years ago) link

Nah, he's right.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 5 December 2018 18:00 (five years ago) link

Yob sucks, and I don't understand why so many critics worship them

it's unperson, you can replace "yob" in this construction with like... most bands

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 5 December 2018 18:01 (five years ago) link

i don't love yob but i respect what they're doing

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 5 December 2018 18:02 (five years ago) link

who da fuq is yob

single bed mentality (||||||||), Wednesday, 5 December 2018 18:04 (five years ago) link

xxp ok, fine, but in this particular case that is an laughably terrible opinion.

alpine static, Wednesday, 5 December 2018 18:04 (five years ago) link

xp a metal band

sleeve, Wednesday, 5 December 2018 18:04 (five years ago) link

idk how you listen to "Marrow" and say this band sucks

and the idea that people only write about them because Mike almost died is borderline offensive. the band has existed for 20 years, has been touring the world for almost as long, and has been a favorite of critics for 10+

alpine static, Wednesday, 5 December 2018 18:07 (five years ago) link

doesn't mean you have to like 'em but citing his medical issue as a good feature hook driving press coverage is impressively stupid

alpine static, Wednesday, 5 December 2018 18:08 (five years ago) link

and the idea that people only write about them because Mike almost died is borderline offensive

i mean, agreed

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 5 December 2018 18:22 (five years ago) link

album's great and dismissing it as only being listed because of the "narrative" is some bullshit

You know it was the first sentence of the press release, right? And I'm well aware of how long Yob have been around - the first record of theirs I heard was the aptly titled The Illusion of Motion. There's a fair amount of good doom out there, but Yob are boring and bad.

grawlix (unperson), Wednesday, 5 December 2018 18:23 (five years ago) link

Literally every single one of their post-hiatus albums has been EOY list fodder.

resident hack (Simon H.), Wednesday, 5 December 2018 18:25 (five years ago) link

There is nothing exceptional about the treatment this record's gotten AFAICT

resident hack (Simon H.), Wednesday, 5 December 2018 18:26 (five years ago) link

you clown yourself for spending any time thinking about press releases imo

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 5 December 2018 18:26 (five years ago) link

There are plenty of hyped up releases I don't care for but I generally assume it's because they hear something I don't, not because they're dumb rubes who fell for an extramusical marketing hook.

resident hack (Simon H.), Wednesday, 5 December 2018 18:28 (five years ago) link

Absolutely true. They've been critical darlings for a decade, and I'm honestly kind of impressed that they've managed to thread the needle and lure in both metal writers and "I don't know shit about metal but this is the best metal album of the year" indie schmendricks. I still think they suck, though.

grawlix (unperson), Wednesday, 5 December 2018 18:29 (five years ago) link

You clown yourself by pretending that shit doesn't matter. I've argued for years that critics' polls should include four categories: Artist, Title, Label, and Publicist.

grawlix (unperson), Wednesday, 5 December 2018 18:35 (five years ago) link

I have no idea who this band is, but, like, every press release tells a story about stuff happening in the artist's life, singling out any one band for it is kind of like singling out a person for breathing air. (there's a point to be made about how this is sometimes gruesome/commodifying for the musician, but that point is not here)

yes you certainly have argued this for years

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 5 December 2018 18:41 (five years ago) link

using your whole fucking thing about press releases to second guess other ppl's enjoyment of the band/record is fucking stupid pretty boring and bad though

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 5 December 2018 18:42 (five years ago) link

i probably should've edited that post more

what a shitty opinion

5th Ward Weeaboo (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 5 December 2018 18:44 (five years ago) link

I think i read a Ben Ratliff thing that I always think about, w/r/t their interplay. They really feel synced into each other. They have melody and soar. This is maybe my third fave Yob record.

5th Ward Weeaboo (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 5 December 2018 18:46 (five years ago) link

i just put on the new yob and i can sorta immediately tell why it's special? they're really locked in and dynamic and there are good melodies on top of it

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 5 December 2018 18:48 (five years ago) link

I mean, this is a lot of what I love about Kranky-era Low, but it's just louder.
