The NPR list is a little on the nose but I do honestly love that their top 10 are all women.

husked, tonal wails (irrational), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 15:21 (five years ago) link

what a triumph

imago, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 15:23 (five years ago) link

lol

pomenitul, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 15:25 (five years ago) link

Stereogum has the first mention of Holy Fawn. Great album.

ArchCarrier, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 15:27 (five years ago) link

Come on imago, where's yr pride in obscurantism? (PS I will probs be voting for at least three of the Canadian trans electronic arts society albums so I'm v on your side about their worth)

emil.y, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 15:28 (five years ago) link

My probable #1 has crept into a couple of lists today, which is nice I guess

Black Dresses being on just one list would be something huh

imago, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 15:29 (five years ago) link

(I think I'm only voting for two but that could change)

imago, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 15:31 (five years ago) link

the only one i think they had a realistic chance on was Stereogum

favourite find from EOY lists season so far is the Idris Ackamoor album from The Quietus list

ufo, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 15:32 (five years ago) link

xp they have a good shot at the ilxor time travel top 500 albums i reck

nxd, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 15:32 (five years ago) link

They had a Fader feature so hopefully that'll swing it there

imago, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 15:32 (five years ago) link

Quietus list looks interesting as usual.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 15:42 (five years ago) link

The Flasher album is my biggest grower of the year. It rules.

alpine static, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 17:13 (five years ago) link

Picadilly introduced me to Kadhja Bonet, and for that I am thankful.

afriendlypioneer, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 17:35 (five years ago) link

Oh you have to check her past album, it’s even better imho.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 17:56 (five years ago) link

starting to seem like my aoty isn't gonna appear on any lists

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 18:41 (five years ago) link

which isn't unexpected

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 18:41 (five years ago) link

I'm thankful to the Gorilla vs. Bear list for introducing me to Rosalía... her voice is amazing.

apologies if this ha been linked upthread 500 times already, but an aggregation: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1BwJaVJa_OZezUbbCE9Z6HpNdcl6wwmlPrCLWm3sKygo/edit#gid=0

particularly recommended if you miss glenn's stats from pazz and jop

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 18:46 (five years ago) link

the love for that coasting Spiritualized record baffles me

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 18:49 (five years ago) link

xp that's cool, thanks

otm about Spiritualized

sleeve, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 18:50 (five years ago) link

surprised that Courtney Barnett is placing so high on so many lists. i thought it was a clear step down, and i thought a lot of people agreed

galaxy brian (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 18:50 (five years ago) link

As a fan, I agree it's a bit of a step down; still a really good album, tho

underqualified backing vocalist (morrisp), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 18:54 (five years ago) link

this is a weird year for me -- the albums I love that I assumed would also be consensus picks (and that aren't the obvious ones, everyone knew the robyn album would do well, etc.) are turning out not to be at all

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 19:01 (five years ago) link

Such as? An album which almost everyone seemed to forget about was the MGMT one. If it had been released in the past trimester I think it would have fared a lot better.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 19:16 (five years ago) link

Wow, this previous Rosalía album (Los Ángeles) is even better... terrific stuff.

underqualified backing vocalist (morrisp), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 19:19 (five years ago) link

Congrats to Smino for having the one interesting album on the Ringer list

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 19:45 (five years ago) link

Imago the Black Dresses album is badass, thanks. That and Senyawa have stood out. I keep losing Wi-Fi access so slow going till I return to the listening later tomorrow night.

Fastnbulbous, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 19:45 (five years ago) link

idk why the Ringer list didn't include input from Lindsay Zoladz unless she's doing her own separate list. Shea Serrano doesn't seem to even have a passing familiarity with anything besides hip-hop, which would be fine if he was writing for XXL or whatever.

evol j, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 19:51 (five years ago) link

xp -- US Girls is the big one

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 19:56 (five years ago) link

I think US Girls is suffering from having come out so early in the year.

evol j, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 20:02 (five years ago) link

24 NU GUINEA | Nuova Napoli

this album is v good, from the gorilla v bear list. sort of swooning continental disco - little bit balearic, bit italo.

if you don't like this track you prob have no functioning heart/soul/ears

FernandoHierro, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 20:11 (five years ago) link

no Cupcakke - Ephorize on any lists so far is surprising considering the momentum she had at the beginning of the year. interest might've just fallen off

austinb, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 20:25 (five years ago) link

it's hard out here for a january release

(unless you're animal collective in 2009)

galaxy brian (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 20:27 (five years ago) link

I like this AV Club punk/hardcore list

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 20:34 (five years ago) link

Couple of things to check out from that AVClub list. Is Drug Church being in the honourable mentions the first sign of them? Because that album's high on my list.

husked, tonal wails (irrational), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 20:43 (five years ago) link

they made the stereogum list

drug church also made stereogum's list, which surprised me, god what a fucking amazing album

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 20:47 (five years ago) link

That's good to see. I have you to blame for it taking over my listening for a good long time.

husked, tonal wails (irrational), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 20:54 (five years ago) link

lol i'm just now seeing voodoo chili's post, sorry for reiterating the very thing you said

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 20:57 (five years ago) link

I listened to the Black Dresses and it's like, I was promised noise pop, not noise + wank electroclash vocals.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:06 (five years ago) link

The bits that were just noise were great though.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:08 (five years ago) link

^^ exactly how i felt about black dresses

The Ringer writes about all forms of pop music, I don't see the upside in having your top 10 be half-determined by someone who only seems to be aware of hip-hop

evol j, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:26 (five years ago) link

that's not a diss on hip-hop, the same would be true if it was someone who only followed country or indie rock or electronic shit.

evol j, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:27 (five years ago) link

Has No Age Snares Like a Haircut made any list?

have you seen some of these lists, dogg?

5th Ward Weeaboo (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:35 (five years ago) link

it's an easy joke but in reality pretty much all but the corniest of lists is gonna have a fair bit of rap, R&B, and pop mixed in with indie fuxxors

evol j, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:41 (five years ago) link

where's greta van fleet?

reggie (qualmsley), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 22:01 (five years ago) link

where's greta van fleet?

on the lower half of a handful of 1974 end of the year music lists.
