I don't think their popularity/readership has declined significantly much at all in the CN years. BNM still a coveted goal, has material gains for artists, etc.

eh, I'm not so sure about that second part

Paul Ponzi, Monday, 3 December 2018 20:43 (five years ago) link

it's probably lessened somewhat, but ask a publicist if it's important or not

alpine static, Monday, 3 December 2018 20:59 (five years ago) link

pitchfork is an improbably good website for the internet in 2018. like i know we clown it for the craft beer native advertising and clickbaitey news items, but it publishes multiple long-form pieces about Drake every day. and they're often good

Sure but what if you want to hear news about musicians besides Drake?

Haven't read the review(s) yet but no way in hell Number of the Beast is better than Piece of Mind, that's some straight poser talk

Paul Ponzi, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 14:16 (five years ago) link

The review's not bad, but I'm gonna draw a line: Iron Maiden are one of the greatest live bands I've ever seen (I've seen them five times), but they don't have a single front-to-back great album. Not one.

grawlix (unperson), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 14:40 (five years ago) link

Hmmm. I want to argue but I think I have to agree. Even their best albums are like 1/3 filler. They're the Tom Petty of metal.

Paul Ponzi, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 14:45 (five years ago) link

Somebody on Twitter offered Powerslave, but that album is two of their best songs up front and two more of their best at the end, with four basically useless filler tracks in a row in between.

seventh son comes perilously close imo

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 14:49 (five years ago) link

but also i don't 100 percent disagree

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 14:49 (five years ago) link

The run from "Losfer Words" to "Back in the Village" easily disqualifies Powerslave

If you eliminate "The Trooper," most of side 2 of Piece of Mind is kinda meh in retrospect

I was going to suggest Seventh Son, which maybe comes closest to a front-to-back classic, but "The Prophecy" and "Only The Good Die Young" are pretty weak iirc

I feel a poll coming on

Paul Ponzi, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 15:05 (five years ago) link

I'm weird but I love the shit out of Somewhere in Time

xp I like Somewhere In Time too but I wonder how much of that has to do with nostalgia. I think it was the first CD I ever owned and I listened to the shit out of it. It's definitely their corniest record, though

Paul Ponzi, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 15:36 (five years ago) link

it was def my first exposure to them

i ended up doing a report on Alexander the Great because it and used a quote from the song at the beginning lol

It's definitely their corniest record, though

Maiden is fundamentally a corny band so perhaps this means it's their best

The Poppy Bush AutoZone (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 15:49 (five years ago) link

Totally agree on the studio records, and would also nominate Seventh Son as the closest.

Live After Death is pretty much flawless, like.

i completely agree but piece of mind was my first maiden record so i thought i might be biased

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 16:43 (five years ago) link

I actually prefer Killers to Number of the Beast. The production on the latter is bum.

***long sigh***

I wish I could listen to bands like Iron Maiden and not laugh uncontrollably.

Iron Maiden definitely have a front-to-back great album, it's called The Final Frontier.

Ha, I almost posted the same thing all those hours ago.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:39 (five years ago) link

Piece of Mind was the album that clicked first for me, for better or for worse. It was when I first heard "Quest for Fire" and sort of did a double take when I realized it was indeed a hilariously literal tale of cavemen hunter gatherers battling each other and dinosaurs. That's when I recognized the band was super silly and lovably so for it. It's also the Iron Maiden song I play for people who think Maiden is some scary metal band and not a goofy prog vehicle with ott vocals, and also for people who are big Tenacious D fans who don't recognize what Jack Black is aping.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:43 (five years ago) link

I'd like to be the Tom Petty of ambient music.

Tom Petty at low volume in the background is probably very comforting.

One of the questions in this article on Pitchfork's Anheuser-Busch InBev-sponsored beer vertical about Ariana Grande's tattoo artist collaborating on a beer with Wicked Weed is "Would you call yourself a feminist?"

it's hilarious to me that Budweiser has snatched up all these craft breweries across the country and they sponsor a section of Pitchfork's website while at the same time they run commercials on TV about how fancy beers are for sissy boys. amazing.

I don't usually complain about Pitchfork scores, but that 6ix9ine album has too high of a score for an album with nothing redeeming about it.

Taking Sides:

Vinyl, Me Please is one of the absolute corniest ventures going and I can’t imagine how or why P4k would agree to this since they steady either only do cool stuff (ie that museum thing, Primavera, etc) or sponsored stuff where someone presumably throws a giant bag of cash at them
