yeah i remember first seeing the duck song back when the video was out in 09. i don't think it's seeing any kind of special resurgence...? although it has been pretty consistently viewed on youtube for the past many years

also a cute song

it's no Ohrwurm like Baby Shark.

My son has been into the duck song for a couple of years, he didn't get the main joke until earlier this year, so mystified as to why he always wanted to watch it

I was conflicted on voting for this song for the EOY ILM poll... on one hand it’s not up to my music standards but on the other hand I’d be very happy to see it represented on the tracks poll as it was probably the song I heard the most this year thanks to my extended family and their babies.

Our dj played a remix of it a few weekends ago as a joke in our club and the crowd went crazy, I have a video of it but I’m too ashamed to ever share it online.

my 4yo started doing the "Alexa play Baby Shark" thing last week. we don't have Alexa but we do have a Bluetooth speaker that must look like the one that's Alexa-enabled at his day care. so this version of Alexa makes him clean up his toys and finish his dinner before it can play any music >:)

frogbs, Tuesday, 8 January 2019 21:53 (five years ago) link

i wonder if local lyrical variation to this song as sung at summer camps and such will decrease now that there's an 'official' hit recording. r.i.p. to lines like 'shark attack' etc

i can make my five-month-old daughter roar with delight just by singing the opening 'bayyyyy-beeeee'

there aren't many things that can evoke that reaction just from one word and two notes - this song has some ocean-deep magickal power imo

she's now 13 months old and still obsessed with baby shark - no matter the scale of emotional meltdown she might be having, just the little 'pinkfong' ident sound at the start of the video will quiet her immediately - it's fucking witchcraft tbh

it's also my most-played spotify song by a considerable distance

when I dropped my daughter off at day care the teacher pulled out a tablet and put this on and immediately all the kids stopped what they were doing, rushed to her and started jumping up and down. and yeah it was that little "pinkfong" tag that they immediately recognized. its nuts. but also quite useful

I've never watched this video as I assume it's some kind of Halloween III trigger but I listened to a podcast history about it and now I am informed.

The "Kleiner Hai” version that was a small hit in Germany in 2008 is quite deranged in its way.

Madchen, Thursday, 28 November 2019 09:42 (four years ago) link

I dunno, at least you don't have to hear the same song over and over again (unless a specific one is requested in which case trying to scrub through three different 20 min episodes to find 'the monster one' is definitely worse).

The voice though, argh! And it puts our son in a really bad mood even though he says he loves it. It’s easy for him to access by himself too (thanks Netflix) so I end up hiding the remote.

that stuff is weirdly hypnotic for 3-4 year olds. there are a lot of similar videos, just different colored animals popping out of eggs, it's the same thing over and over again but kids love it

yea I've tried to steer them away from that stuff though admittedly I do sometimes get fascinated by how intentionally bizarre they seem to be. they've got sort of a dreamlike quality to them. no plot, no internal logic, its just stuff happening

Baby Shark is up to 5.3B views, now the #2 most-viewed youtube of all-time.

Despacito is still #1 with 6.8B but Baby Shark is averaging 300M views per month while Despacito is only tracking at 100M views/month... perhaps by January 2021 Baby Shark could move into 1st.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 8 May 2020 18:26 (three years ago) link

if you added in all the different versions of Baby Shark and the hundreds of kids songs on YouTube that use the Baby Shark melody you'd probably have more than the rest of YouTube combined

frogbs, Friday, 8 May 2020 19:12 (three years ago) link

What's the deal with Despacito? Doesn't seem like a particularly noteworthy song or video to me.

frogbs, Friday, 8 May 2020 19:43 (three years ago) link

I mean, obviously if it has X Billion views. It just seems like a generic song to have on in the background or something.

🔫 (peace, man), Friday, 8 May 2020 19:49 (three years ago) link

was terribly terribly ie about to hurl hungover on a hot busy coach ride a couple of years ago and the cheerful community of young italians at the back of the coach kept on singing Despacito over and over again. every time i hear it it takes me very vividly back to that moment.

what's the name of the effect in despacito where the song slows down for a moment when the hook comes back in? i was reading about it an completely forgot what it's called. it was supposed to be the secret ingredient to its catchiness
