actually the most maddening/incredible version was this one which the creators have now aggressively scrubbed off YouTube for some unknown reason

xp Nyan Cat placed #24 in 2011. I think it was my number one! #neverforget

I'm fairly certain Nyan Cat was my number one too. But that has a quality above and beyond Baby Shark. I definitely went through periods where I would listen to it for hours on end. I went a bit mad, perhaps, but it will always remain special to me.

emil.y, Friday, 30 November 2018 14:56 (five years ago) link

Completely agree with your closing statement, and I've listened to it for hours too. It truly is a song that does not (have to) end.

never made the "Nyan Cat" connection but yeah both these songs have this sort of synthesized catchiness to them, as if they were developed in a lab. they're like the Fentanyl to the Percocet of "Wheels on the Bus"

That thing linked by frogbs is hardcore cursed, the gentle acoustic guitar sound in the background is possibly the wrongest thing ever recorded.

One thing I hope that grown up music can learn from the success of baby shark is the importance of having an extra verse to tell you it's the end of the song.

My four year old avoided this until about a month ago when he picked it up at preschool. He watched it a bunch over a week and kind of forgot about it, though he does randomly start singing two-word phrases to the tune of it.

joygoat, Friday, 30 November 2018 18:56 (five years ago) link

The odd thing, at least in the UK, is how it's been such a slow burn. The single made the top forty in August but only just, then fell out, and it's now back in the top forty again; the song itself came out four years ago.

I don't like it as much as Gangam Style. The melody sounds sad. It's less upbeat than I was expecting for a Korea novelty song about a baby shark. It makes me feel unhappy and I don't like that.

Seriously, I'm always thrown for a loop when a song just stops without the singer giving me a heads up. Even just a quick 'the end' helps so much.

Haha — I found that Duck Song around 5 years ago, trolling YT for kids stuff when my son was a tot. Spent a hot day playing it over & over. (There’s a “sequel” song/video that’s pretty good, IIRC)

I was conflicted on voting for this song for the EOY ILM poll... on one hand it’s not up to my music standards but on the other hand I’d be very happy to see it represented on the tracks poll as it was probably the song I heard the most this year thanks to my extended family and their babies.

Our dj played a remix of it a few weekends ago as a joke in our club and the crowd went crazy, I have a video of it but I’m too ashamed to ever share it online.

my 4yo started doing the "Alexa play Baby Shark" thing last week. we don't have Alexa but we do have a Bluetooth speaker that must look like the one that's Alexa-enabled at his day care. so this version of Alexa makes him clean up his toys and finish his dinner before it can play any music >:)

Despacito is still #1 with 6.8B but Baby Shark is averaging 300M views per month while Despacito is only tracking at 100M views/month... perhaps by January 2021 Baby Shark could move into 1st.
