I recently put a clause in my will with instructions for my undertaker: 'plz make my face look like Nic Cage's face at the end of the 2018 film Mandy.'

you guys did not understance his stlye of english (Old Lunch), Thursday, 29 November 2018 18:32 (five years ago) link

Lol how are used copies surfacing already

Forgot to post in here but I’m so glad I held off on streaming this, it looked like it was never gonna play here and then it got one showing on the biggest screen in the city. I fucking loved it but a lot of the audience didn’t; I have a feeling they were expecting hobo with a chainsaw

didn’t like this at all really

Of the deleted scenes, I think they should have kept the conversation with the sheriff.

this movie would have been better if it held back on the silliness a bit.

You're a vicious snowflake.

I finally watched this on Shudder and liked it a lot, even though it is not my normal fare. The surreal and disturbing visual and aural vibe throughout was uncompromising. Did not like the gore because I am getting squeamish in my old age.

Loved the scene where Nic Cage dips the tip of his finger into the jar with the psychedelic mayo and instantly trips his balls off when earlier the biker dudes were chugging jars of the stuff.

Also: Cheddar Goblin.

Couldn't handle this boring and annoying avalanche of iconographic signifiers. Bathroom scene, forging the sword, borrowing the gun from his pal...all these scenes are stupid sorry. Other audience members who probably have pizza tattoos were having a great time laughing and whooping at everything Nic Cage did or even "yeeeeeaaah Sabbath!" when Mandy was wearing that shirt. Once it became clear it was a revenge flick I bailed since another agonizingly slow hour of these bozos cheering on everyone being slaughtered one by one was too much to contemplate.

starting to regret getting the little caesar’s logo tattooed under my left eye now

It's sad that you should ever have cause to doubt such a heroic act.

I sorta half-watched an hour or so of a Harry Potter the other night while I was making dinner. Everything I saw was so stupid that I wound up burning the chicken. Pssh. Gaw.

well, that is otm, tbf

i watched part of titanic last week. leo is pretty good but can't help but think that some of ACTION or event would have helped to bring all the stories together. a tale of betrayal, romance, and a beautiful indestructible ship as the backdrop- it's all a good start, but can't help but feel that all that potential is squandered

Karl Malone, Monday, 10 December 2018 19:33 (five years ago) link

where was the cheddar goblin of titanic?!

I saw this with a midnight audience over the weekend and apart from one excitable doofus jumping the gun on the CRAZY EVIL line like it's fucking Rocky Horror, people were good- none of that performative geek laughter that makes my blood boil at so many screenings like this, folks let the quiet parts land in dead silence, and there was no cheering for the Cheddar Goblin, likely because a lot of people were seeing it for the first time- it played in Philly for exactly one screening prior to this- and were still digesting what had just happened.

The two details that stuck out most to me on a second watch were Cage and demon biker #2's shared Muttley laugh-wheeze when the former has stabbed the latter through the neck, like they're sharing some private joke; and in the final car scene intercut with Cage and Mandy's first meeting, where she cries a very prominent single tear in the flashback (in the acid sense as well, I guess) footage of the party; I didn't notice that at all seeing this on a TV.

Oh no, those second two were positives, at least to me! Like, there are clearly parts of the early going where the ambience is supposed to take over, and I appreciated the fact that the hooting stopped. Same for the Cheddar Goblin; I had to mute the phrase on Twitter because the distributors seemed so goddamned hellbent on making it a meme template even before lots of people had gotten the chance to even see Mandy. And the fact that the audience were actually reacting properly to The Thing That Happens Before Cheddar Goblin made me appreciate how carefully placed it is as a *tiny* break in the tension, and not just some WWWACKY SHIT they let the Too Many Cooks guy plop in the middle of the movie.

in context it was just another piece of contextual info that made me realize that the world of the film was not quite the same as our world

cheddar goblin is a popular corporate mascot, so of course chainsaw fights seem reasonable

just1n3, Thursday, 27 June 2019 09:22 (four years ago) link

that's exactly the word i used to describe it upthread! it's got such a uniquely hypnotic vibe

big beautiful wario (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 27 June 2019 09:25 (four years ago) link

this got my number 1 vote in the film poll, it's completely insane but also the most heartbreaking thing ever

or something, Thursday, 27 June 2019 09:34 (four years ago) link

this got my number 2, but it was close, and my number 1 is also a mind-altering masterpiece

Just learned that Cage was initially meant to play Jeremiah Sand.

I'm glad he didn't

or something, Thursday, 27 June 2019 18:05 (four years ago) link

it would have been a much more... i dunno what you’d call it, conventionally strange movie that way?

big beautiful wario (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 27 June 2019 18:31 (four years ago) link

imagine what we'd have gotten if he played the role of Mandy

mh, Thursday, 27 June 2019 20:03 (four years ago) link

really love the whole story about cage insisting that he play red

Well, when I first met with Panos, he told me he wanted me to play Jeremiah Sand, and I said, “Why?” And he said, “Well, I see him as the California Klaus Kinski.” And I said, “Well, I am the California Klaus Kinski, but I want to play Red.” ... I did not want to play Jeremiah Sand. I felt that I had gone through enough life experience. Not that I can’t work from the imagination, I normally do, but I had enough life experience contending the failure of my third marriage and still trying to recover from the loss of my father after many, many years. Still not just quite over it. As I look at these footnotes here from the talking points that coincide with Panos himself, that I … having had experiences with loss, certainly family loss, I was in step with that.

I felt I could play Red authentically and organically and put those feelings of loss in a productive place as opposed to a destructive place, and a constructive place. And so, that’s why I gravitated towards Red. I just felt that I could go after the cult and the demon bikers in a way that was in his world, but had some sort of sound of truth.
