Apologies for all the newbie questions but is it right some games can't have more than save file?
If I want to play say, Zelda or Mario once the kids are in bed, is there a way for me to do that without having to use their save file?
― groovypanda, Tuesday, 27 November 2018 10:52 (five years ago) link
I think if you login as a different person, you get a different save file?
― Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 27 November 2018 11:13 (five years ago) link
Yeah, separate profiles is the answer.
― Evan, Tuesday, 27 November 2018 12:35 (five years ago) link
Cheers both
― groovypanda, Tuesday, 27 November 2018 12:48 (five years ago) link
some games have multiple saves too i know Mario does. i think zelda you have to change profiles
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 27 November 2018 14:17 (five years ago) link
i thought zelda did? tho i havent played for a few months
― nxd, Tuesday, 27 November 2018 14:24 (five years ago) link
you can make multiple saves but i think they're all tied to a single playthrough and if you start a new game they get wiped
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 27 November 2018 14:34 (five years ago) link
The ending of Inside is hilariously "????"

There'll probably be a New Year sale if you can hang on
― groovypanda, Thursday, 29 November 2018 08:04 (five years ago) link

Amazon Logistics apparently has no idea where my order of Let's Go Eevee is; the last time this happened was also coincidentally with a big-ticket Switch game close to release (Mario Odyssey). What are the odds
― You guys are caterpillar (Telephone thing), Thursday, 29 November 2018 17:41 (five years ago) link
To clarify, I'm not accusing anyone in the unfortunate situation of working for Amazon of stealing stuff- by all means, steal my shit if you can get away with it, Amazon will pay for the replacement- just that somehow the largest retailer in the world has a garbage supply chain and that the shipping confirmation/"delivery update"/useless tracking number for an in-house shipping service is probably a series of convenient ass-covering fictions
― You guys are caterpillar (Telephone thing), Thursday, 29 November 2018 17:43 (five years ago) link
amazon isn't reliable with nintendo preorders for some reason, have heard the same thing from a lot of people. you can often get a free month of prime if they miss the delivery date and you complain.

do all switch games require two switches if i want to play multiplayer with my kids (like splatoon 2) or does it vary from game to game? are there some that can be played multiplayer with one switch but multiple controllers?
― na (NA), Thursday, 29 November 2018 18:24 (five years ago) link
Nearly all Nintendo-published games with multiplayer have local multiplayer; it's a big selling point of the hardware after all. (Ready for local multiplayer anywhere with the joycons!) Splatoon is an exception. But Mario Kart, Mario Party, ARMS, and many indie games have local multiplayer.

yeh there's plenty of local multiplayer games, Mario Kart, Overcooked, Rocket League, Smash of course, Minecraft, Mario Tennis etc. oh and get Snipperclips, that game is awesome.
― ( X '____' )/ (zappi), Thursday, 29 November 2018 18:30 (five years ago) link
yeah Splatoon is an exception, i think everything else Nintendo makes has local multiplayer
― ciderpress, Thursday, 29 November 2018 19:24 (five years ago) link
All local multiplayer fans should get TowerFall btw I just want to reiterate that
― I have measured out my life in coffee shop loyalty cards (silby), Thursday, 29 November 2018 19:27 (five years ago) link
ok cool thanks
― na (NA), Thursday, 29 November 2018 20:12 (five years ago) link
& almost every local multiplayer game works with a single joycon per player, they even have secret L and R buttons on the rail side that i never realized were there until i tried it
― ciderpress, Thursday, 29 November 2018 21:38 (five years ago) link
they're less secret when you slide the Joy-Con Grip on
― I have measured out my life in coffee shop loyalty cards (silby), Thursday, 29 November 2018 21:49 (five years ago) link
yeah when i bought my switch the wristband things went right into storage and i never really looked at them

You all are really bad at keeping secrets

Splatoon 2 local multiplayer is a bit of a pisser as that is one of the games my son wants.
We've got 2 Switches but looks like we'll also need two copies of the game.
― groovypanda, Friday, 30 November 2018 09:33 (five years ago) link
Splatoon is Nintendo's online shooter it doesn't really work as a local multiplayer game as it uses teams of 4
― ciderpress, Friday, 30 November 2018 14:05 (five years ago) link
Fair enough. Was sure I'd seen a photo/video of a stock Nintendo family all playing it on the same screen but could be wrong.

mario odyssey and xc2 are in this weekend's eshop sale if that's relevant for anyone
― ciderpress, Thursday, 6 December 2018 21:10 (five years ago) link
GOD DAMN IT
― teen heartthrob Pacey Winger (Will M.), Thursday, 6 December 2018 21:15 (five years ago) link
JUST BOUGHT ODYSSEY
(before the sale)(from a store)(and opened it)
I bought XC2 from the Eshop on sale last week, for 40 € I think
― L'assie (Euler), Thursday, 6 December 2018 21:27 (five years ago) link
i think euro eshop has different sales yeah
― ciderpress, Thursday, 6 December 2018 21:27 (five years ago) link
maybe someone else has already talked abhout it so i apologize, but: as someone who has never touched a xenoblade game, will i like xc2? who are they for? i sometimes get into jrpgs but it isn't consistent. i might pick this one up but i really have no frame or reference? ditto for octopath traveler, which i remember getting a lot of praise in this thread for the demo, but not as much for the main game? help my ilg, i trust only u
― teen heartthrob Pacey Winger (Will M.), Thursday, 6 December 2018 21:38 (five years ago) link
as someone who has never touched a xenoblade game, will i like xc2? who are they for?
weebs, mostly
i loved xenoblade 2 but you definitely need to either enjoy shonen anime nonsense or have a high tolerance for it. beyond that the draw is it's got insanely good environment design and music, a weirdo multi-layered MMO-esque combat system, and a story that's clearly from the same mind as xenogears
octopath traveler is more of a throwback to the snes/psx era sprite-based jrpgs and has more general appeal
― ciderpress, Thursday, 6 December 2018 21:51 (five years ago) link
octopath traveler is fine, it perfectly serves its intention of slavishly recreating a certain type of gaming experience with some of the worst or most frustrating parts smoothed out but if you arent brain damaged by a childhood of grinding for meaningless quest items in poorly translated jrpgs i dont know how "fun" it would be to play
― (° . ° )― (Lamp), Thursday, 6 December 2018 21:53 (five years ago) link
i love danganronpa and persona so animu bullshit is fine. trying to figure out if i will get into xc2 is tricky tho, the vibe i am getting from watching videos is like... "tales of" or new star oceans or phantasy star online, games that never "stuck" for me. am i way off?
xp i am brain damaged by said things so octo seems ok for me
― teen heartthrob Pacey Winger (Will M.), Thursday, 6 December 2018 21:55 (five years ago) link
tales of is a good comparison for the general style of anime writing it is but the combat is way different and the world design is more detailed and alien than tales. xenoblade combat isn't really like anything else in the JRPG space so it's really hard to know if you'd like it before trying it, but FF12 is a bit similar at least on the surface level? you have autoattacks and abilities on cooldowns like in an MMO and then there's elaborate element-based combo chains.
― ciderpress, Thursday, 6 December 2018 22:13 (five years ago) link
i think lamp's selling octopath short in that its combat system is way more engaging and puzzley than any of the games it's calling back to
― ciderpress, Thursday, 6 December 2018 22:27 (five years ago) link
Octopath Traveller and XC2 sort of have similar concepts for their combat systems, in that the objective is to do enough of certain moves that do a little damage but make your enemy more vulnerable so that you can then do other moves to do lots of damage at critical moments. In XC2 it's in real-time and substantially more complicated.
Play Xenoblade Chronicles 2 if doing combos to do other combos to do other combos to do the ultimate combo and then starting over sounds like fun to you (it is fun)
(there are literally five layers of combos)
― I have measured out my life in coffee shop loyalty cards (silby), Thursday, 6 December 2018 22:31 (five years ago) link
The story of XC2 is bananaballs and the combat is like playing extremely slow Dance Dance Revolution
― I have measured out my life in coffee shop loyalty cards (silby), Thursday, 6 December 2018 22:32 (five years ago) link
octopath gets docked a full point though for not giving exp to benched characters in 2018. even dragon quest does this now!
― ciderpress, Thursday, 6 December 2018 22:37 (five years ago) link
goty candidate yoku's island express is also half off in the eshop sale
