what's the opposite of a thoughtful person

princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 26 November 2018 20:43 (five years ago) link

In general she's terrible, Tiny Furniture was fine, the start of Girls was good (got bored of it and her after 3 -4 seasons? and it had a hand in making greenpoint and williamsburg unliveable) but I appreciate her narcissism and prolificness that doesn't care whether people like or hate it. I am trying to think of another woman that produced so much work that young that is this terrible.

Yerac, Monday, 26 November 2018 20:48 (five years ago) link

I support lena dunham. Being rich and eccentric isn’t the worst thing on earth.

Trϵϵship, Monday, 26 November 2018 20:49 (five years ago) link

She’s definitely said regrettable things but she’s apologized, I think. I don’t get the hatred except for the fact that she’s an easy target.

Trϵϵship, Monday, 26 November 2018 20:50 (five years ago) link

I do give her some credit for trying to get the Clinton campaign to distance itself from Weinstein. Not reading that profile though lol

resident hack (Simon H.), Monday, 26 November 2018 20:52 (five years ago) link

She's an easy target because she's insufferable and successful like how usually only men are that insufferable and successful. That's the part I admire. The annoying thing is when people use her as the face of: feminism, millennials, new yorkers, hipsters, brooklyn, etc.

Yerac, Monday, 26 November 2018 20:56 (five years ago) link

She’s definitely a little insufferable but also somewhat talented and charming. Obviously unsuited to be the “face of feminism” but she didn’t ask for that and it mostly seems like conservatives who want to tag her as that. As a face of millennial brooklynites.... idk it kind of fits.

Trϵϵship, Monday, 26 November 2018 21:00 (five years ago) link

idk y'all every other quote in this profile feels like an embarrassing gaffe in itself

princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 26 November 2018 21:04 (five years ago) link

like i deeply agree she's too easy of a target but she... keeps... doing... it

princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 26 November 2018 21:04 (five years ago) link

personally i also have no interest in women who are finally as shitty as men

princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 26 November 2018 21:05 (five years ago) link

equity!

Yerac, Monday, 26 November 2018 21:05 (five years ago) link

Also it seems weird to be super harsh on her when part of her deal is being very upfront about her flaws and limitations. So much of how people exist today has to do with seeming irreproachable and perfect—she is kind of refreshing because she’s so much the opposite of that.

Trϵϵship, Monday, 26 November 2018 21:06 (five years ago) link

I don't think she can ever apologize away her public statement defending her friend that was accused of sexually assaulting an actress that was a minor at the time.

Yerac, Monday, 26 November 2018 21:08 (five years ago) link

she's upfront about what she thinks are her flaws and limitations. the apologies are a result of her constantly running up against new (to her, i guess, old to the rest of us) limitations

this is pretty much her tagline! it's her version of "people hate me because I'm beautiful"

mh, Monday, 26 November 2018 21:10 (five years ago) link

the other line from the profile that really stood out:

She sent a screenshot of a motivational text conversation she’d had with her friend Lady Gaga, who is saved in her contacts as Lady Gaga, not as Stefani.

every time the word "friend" pops up after that, the whole concept is just kind of hanging there

mh, Monday, 26 November 2018 21:13 (five years ago) link

i mostly don't need to read interviews with "makers" whether i like their work or not

I watched this movie on netflix this weekend that I am learning was called "Literally, Right Before Aaron" because on my netflix it was called "The Wedding Guest" or something. It feels so strange that they are still making these types of movies where the main character is highly unlikeable, neurotic, self absorbed and self sabotages everything. Is this a genre? (bringing it up because it's Dunham's genre).

Yerac, Monday, 26 November 2018 21:16 (five years ago) link

Better that than more movies about the Avengers

no

xpost I can't even touch that she returned her dog to the shelter because that was pretty high on why people don't like her (BARC was my neighborhood shelter).

Yerac, Monday, 26 November 2018 21:20 (five years ago) link

I forgot about that

Trϵϵship, Monday, 26 November 2018 21:21 (five years ago) link

How no one has made an Overnight-style doc about her yet, I have no idea.

resident hack (Simon H.), Monday, 26 November 2018 21:22 (five years ago) link

would it be that different from any work she's scripted/acted in?

mh, Monday, 26 November 2018 21:27 (five years ago) link

most of that stuff is pretty good!

The first question that popped into my head was "starring Justin Long?" - and yes, yes it is.

This was one of the dumbest things people got mad at her about iirc

eh i mean like the first time you meet lady gaga at some oscar party or something you're probably gonna be like oh we should hang out and exchange numbers and put her in as lady gaga

i have really old friends as ALL CAPS THEIR FIRST NAME because I originally put them in on my old brick nokia

The very fact that this detail was pointed out in the profile as somehow significant or “telling” is symptomatic. America has a weird relationship to Lena Dunham. For some reason people decided they needed to hate her.

Trϵϵship, Monday, 26 November 2018 22:46 (five years ago) link

People believed that she made up stories about the dog biting her because they hate her for other reasons.

Nerdstrom Poindexter, Monday, 26 November 2018 22:46 (five years ago) link

Lena Dunham might have encouraged this but it’s still an uncomfortable dynamic—feels reactionary somehow

Trϵϵship, Monday, 26 November 2018 22:47 (five years ago) link

xxp all compelling bits of information that might add up to something more once we establish some patterns

mh, Monday, 26 November 2018 22:48 (five years ago) link

This is a person a lot of people decided to publicly call a “child molester” because she wrote about playing doctor as a kid.

She says eye-roll-y things for sure but It’s weird to me (and significantly worse) that people who should know better don’t feel bad about being another person who piles on in the mob.

Nerdstrom Poindexter, Monday, 26 November 2018 22:50 (five years ago) link

meh if she was a fella of similar behaviours ye'd be baying for blood

old yeller-at-clouds (darraghmac), Monday, 26 November 2018 22:53 (five years ago) link

Idk about mr poindexter but that isn’t the case with me, daz

Trϵϵship, Monday, 26 November 2018 22:55 (five years ago) link

I tend to take a soft line on these kinds of “tone deaf” characters

Trϵϵship, Monday, 26 November 2018 22:57 (five years ago) link

there are certain ILX posters who aggressively piled on her with the "child molestor" tag, which (for the record) I challenged at the time in no uncertain terms.

Οὖτις, Monday, 26 November 2018 22:58 (five years ago) link

fwiw I think she is actually largely oblivious to her failings/shortcomings, she has a strangely myopic worldview that nonetheless occasionally produces good work. also a lot of garbage.

Οὖτις, Monday, 26 November 2018 22:59 (five years ago) link

gabbneb isn't exactly wrong here but being a Dunham Defender is so pointedly on brand

louise ck (milo z), Monday, 26 November 2018 23:00 (five years ago) link

Οὖτις, Monday, 26 November 2018 23:00 (five years ago) link

might have encouraged this but it’s still an uncomfortable dynamic

if you're saying that by continuing to engage with Dunham material we're all part of her ongoing project, then yes, I agree

mh, Monday, 26 November 2018 23:01 (five years ago) link

I just had to re-review this particular dog issue but it wasn't the biting but that she was embellishing some kind of troubled past for the dog as the reason why she had to give it up. Plus people would side with BARC on this since they have been in the neighborhood forever.

Yerac, Monday, 26 November 2018 23:02 (five years ago) link

It would likely really really suck to have two nyc artists for parents.

Yerac, Monday, 26 November 2018 23:03 (five years ago) link

An incomplete list of things Dunham has been asked to apologize for: the nondiverse casting on Girls; casting Donald Glover as a black Republican boyfriend the season after she got in trouble for having an all-white cast; saying in an interview, “No one would be calling me a racist if they knew how badly I wanted to fuck Drake”; declaring herself “thin for, like, Detroit”; writing a New Yorker essay called “Dog or Jewish Boyfriend? A Quiz”; constantly being naked; tweeting a photo of herself wearing a scarf around her head like a hijab; accusing a Spanish magazine of airbrushing her photos (it did not); comparing Bill Cosby to the Holocaust; giving Horvath a brown baby at the end of Girls (and casting a baby that was Puerto Rican and Haitian, not half-Pakistani, as the script dictated); comparing the reading of negative Jezebel coverage to getting beaten in the face by an abusive husband; accusing NFL player Odell Beckham Jr. of not wanting to sleep with her; saying she disliked India because of the visible poverty; apologizing but never learning.

she rules
