it is very fun. it is one of the best big budget games of all time. it has almost TOO much content, imo - i never got close to finishing it because i kept on doing all the side quests and wandering around, exploring. after about 50 hours i had burned myself out and probably got through less than 1/3 of the game. whoops. i hope to return to it someday.

Josh in Chicago you should play Breath of the Wild

L'assie (Euler), Sunday, 25 November 2018 22:21 (five years ago) link

Speaking of backlogs I finished AC Black Flag tonight. I really want to get to the Paris one but I also am nuts and like to play series in order so I gotta decide if I play Rogue and Freedom’s Cry first 🙄

L'assie (Euler), Sunday, 25 November 2018 22:23 (five years ago) link

Rogue is fun, Freedom Cry is short and a bit too familiar, and the Paris and London ones both suck. Debating picking up the Egypt one but the two before it left a bad taste. The only two ACs I didn’t finish.

EZ Snappin, Sunday, 25 November 2018 22:33 (five years ago) link

I’ve heard that the Paris and London ones aren’t great, but I know the cities well irl and I want to play in them. I’ll be delighted to get to Egypt and Greece in 2022 or whatever

L'assie (Euler), Sunday, 25 November 2018 22:44 (five years ago) link

Yeah, the cites are fun in Paris and London. Shame about the game you play in those locales.

EZ Snappin, Sunday, 25 November 2018 22:45 (five years ago) link

ive been told the egypt one was kind of a gameplay reboot it and odyssey are more just witcher 3 clones than full on stealth/assassin games like the old ones

ciderpress, Sunday, 25 November 2018 23:56 (five years ago) link

Yeah, it looks like Odyssey should have been called The Greeker. At least Origins is literally the first dude so he’s just learning.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 26 November 2018 02:12 (five years ago) link

Josh, I actually regret playing Witcher 3, mainly because I spend be $40 on a game that ultimately I did not find fun. The writing didn't impress me, I never latched onto the characters, and the size of the game is just exhausting. Also, its developer is transphobic and seems to have sympathies to gamer gate.

I loved the card game in it, though.

On the plus side, it was only $20 for me, so I only have to enjoy it half as much as you did. Looking around, the amount of praise this game has garnered is kind of crazy, but like I implied before, after I finish Dark Souls (which is not so difficult or imposing that I even have to say "if") it'll nonetheless be a bit before I dive into another complex RPG action system, let alone another Soulsborne game and certainly not an endless open world game like Witcher. I think first I need to finish Doom (it was getting pretty repetitive, and I think I have a ways to go), then I might try the Uncharteds I have, or God of War, but I have a hunch my family got me Spider-man for Chanukah, so that might be the best palette cleanser.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 26 November 2018 13:29 (five years ago) link

Having to spend too much time learning crafting and spells and alchemy destroys otherwise great games for me.
I've barely scratched the surface of Witcher 3 or Skyrim as I don't have what it takes to give a shit about collecting ingredients for recipes.

Non, je ned raggette rien (onimo), Monday, 26 November 2018 14:06 (five years ago) link

I glanced over the game mechanics, and at least it looks like in Witcher 3 once you've crafted a recipe it sort of automatically regenerates, so you don't have to craft things again and again. I'm so glad that's not in Dark Souls, since it's (honestly) one (other) thing that's kept me from Zelda.

back in the ps3/360 era i had a 360 and i always felt like i was missing out on god of war and uncharted games bc they were so well reviewed and now that i've played both... wow they were really bad i was not missing anything

Mordy, Monday, 26 November 2018 14:22 (five years ago) link

All of them, even the latest PS4 exclusive Uncharted 4 and God of War? I've heard nothing but good things about those.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 26 November 2018 14:24 (five years ago) link

have you heard anything but good things about uncharted 1-3 and the previous gow entries? do u like button mashing linear experiences w/ quicktime events & generic storylines? if so you'll love these.

Mordy, Monday, 26 November 2018 14:40 (five years ago) link

sometimes you don't want to "grind" you just want to be an effortless badass and Uncharted is v v good at that

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Monday, 26 November 2018 14:57 (five years ago) link

xpost as a matter of fact, I have heard mixed things about the earlier God of War games, as well as the earlier Uncharted games. I've heard that both of the recent installments were miles better than their predecessors.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 26 November 2018 15:07 (five years ago) link

i liked the first two God of Wars when i played them a over a decade ago. probably wouldn't get much out of them now. i mean they're dumb, ott, arcade beat-em-ups, but they were well made and p. satisfying on a tactile level.

haven't played the new one, but yeah, seems to be a bit of a departure. way less cartoonish and more serious/story driven.

ciderpress, Monday, 26 November 2018 15:20 (five years ago) link

Could be! I've seen it compared to The Last of Us (which most people like?).

I like apples and I like bananas too, doesn't mean I want my apples to start tasting like bananas.

JimD, Monday, 26 November 2018 15:29 (five years ago) link

nu God of War is v good IMO, gets the balance between RPG and power-brawler about right, and you can play the game either way if you like, the reward structure and progression is well balanced, the characters aren't too annoying and in some cases are actively entertaining (e.g. the disembodied head guy you carry around with you for much of the game who tells you stories from Norse mythology). Oh and it looks AMAZING, and would no doubt look even better if played in 4K on a big screen, it looked sumptuous enough on my 31" HDTV.

ciderpress, Monday, 26 November 2018 15:30 (five years ago) link

xp to myself, it feels properly tactile in a way that Witcher didn't too, the axe and shield combo has the a great feeling of impact

ditto

the uncharted trilogy came with my ps4, and i think i got about 7 hours into the whole thing. god of war was better than uncharted but still left me wondering why everyone was calling it GOTY

people are too easily impressed by scale and spectacle imo

ciderpress, Monday, 26 November 2018 15:37 (five years ago) link

I am impressed by scale and spectacle but Uncharted 1 was really lame compared to even the worst AC I've played, but I guess it's old and the later ones are (according to this thread) better.

Has anyone here something good to say about Dragon Quest Builders? I kinda think it might be perfect for me?

L'assie (Euler), Monday, 26 November 2018 16:00 (five years ago) link

neither are real scale tho. they're both totally on rails. i was playing i guess gow3? and the whole opening sequence i was climbing this titan and fighting these horse arms and sure it felt big bc the titan was so large but it felt so small bc there was only one way to go, i was doing the same stuff the whole time, and everything was repetitive. u know what game (that lots of ppl dislike ok) has a huge scale? rdr2.

Mordy, Monday, 26 November 2018 16:01 (five years ago) link

i was doing the same stuff the whole time, and everything was repetitive

i meant two different thing by this -- that everything i did was either: button mash attack, do quicktime events, and that everything was repetitive - i fought the same horse arms thing like a dozen times. there wasn't even variety within the climb let alone what i was doing while climbing.

Mordy, Monday, 26 November 2018 16:02 (five years ago) link

uncharted 2 was a relentlessly entertaining thrill-ride when i played it back on ps3 but it's probably instructive that i've never played more than an hour or two into the remastered version despite owning it for like 18 months by this point

By all accounts (including this thread) they get better with each installment, but the earlier ones are worth playing for a few plot/thematic payoffs in 4, if anyone cares. The newest God of War afaict is more reboot than sequel.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 26 November 2018 16:13 (five years ago) link

witcher 3 is about exploring and characters and stories. if you go into it wanting an intense game with challenging fighting, you're probably not going to like it much (though i probably played it on easy mode). something that no one has mentioned is that it has sex scenes, which are embarrassing/funny, and you might not want anyone else around when those come up because you will be mortified.

uncharted games are about looking at them and saying "wow this looks great." you're supposed to play them as your first game in the console generation and/or if you got a new tv.

na (NA), Monday, 26 November 2018 16:16 (five years ago) link

ha yeah, they're the videogame dark side of the moon

Haha, this is so otm. Although I have to admit that after a while I was seeking out a sex scene (only saw one) because I wanted to experience it. I like Nathan for you

ciderpress, Monday, 26 November 2018 16:33 (five years ago) link

re: dq builders i haven't played it but have heard good things from everyone i know that has. it's obviously a Minecraft-esque crafting game but unlike Minecraft it's got quests/objectives, and afaik you don't just get to build out one town forever, once you finish a chapter you move on to a new one and start from scratch.

ciderpress, Monday, 26 November 2018 16:36 (five years ago) link

uncharted 2 is fun but it's way too scripted, and the fights are really, really bad

i've been holding in back to finish playing for ages but it's just not enjoyable enough anymore.

i heard the third one was merely so-so, but the fourth one was decent

in general most games seem worse after you've played BOTW

Speaking of spectacle, I wonder how even well received/balanced games would be viewed/appreciated minus the cut scenes. For examples, Dark Souls, which I'm currently playing. Looks good, has a good sense of scale, but I wonder how it would play minus those handfuls of cut scenes introducing boss battles or new locations or whatnot. What if the game were purely mechanical. Would it be worse off without the animated cut scenes? Would any game? Or are those cut scenes - the apex of Hollywood-aping (or currently more like vice versa) spectacle - important or essential to the rhythm or balance of the game?

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 26 November 2018 16:54 (five years ago) link

dark souls is an odd example to pick cuz the cutscenes are few and far-between and the game's story - which is unusually well thought-out for a game - is delivered almost entirely through the uniquely 'gamey' methods of environmental design and written descriptions of objects which are easy to entirely overlook

sign up for my waterless urinals webinar (bizarro gazzara), Monday, 26 November 2018 16:59 (five years ago) link

the arc of the ilx videogame discussion is long but it bends towards dark souls

sign up for my waterless urinals webinar (bizarro gazzara), Monday, 26 November 2018 17:00 (five years ago) link

No, I get that Dark Souls is something of an outlier in this nascent debate. I just meant that as relatively few the cut scenes may be, they still play a big role in establishing the scale and menace of the monsters. If you came across, say, the Gaping Dragon or O&S the same way you came across, say, the Capra Demon, they might not have as much impact. Or, say, the dramatic transport to Anor Londo, when in theory you could just poof appear there with no build up. The cut scenes definitely enhance the gameplay. Or maybe the (your) argument is that yeah, they do, but only because they are few and far between, which could be right. I haven't played enough of these AAA games to know what I'm in for. Doom certainly has some talky bits that offer a breather from the aggro. But I imagine stuff like Last of Us and Uncharted are very talky.

also Nathan Drake is the creepiest creep to have ever creeped

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Monday, 26 November 2018 17:19 (five years ago) link

the characters aren't too annoying

Ten minutes of Kratos Jr in the new GoW had me trying to lop his head off.

Uncharted 4 looks amazing. Yes, it's on rails and designed so that the casualest of players can complete it but I still found it satisfying if simple. Best climbing sim ever.

Non, je ned raggette rien (onimo), Monday, 26 November 2018 17:21 (five years ago) link

Nathan Drake is like do you like Indiana Jones and tomb raider but they’re not generic enough?

Mordy, Monday, 26 November 2018 17:21 (five years ago) link

How are the Tomb Raider reboots? I've never played any of the Tomb Raiders, but they seem OK. Definitely another gather-and-craft sort of game, though, or so it seems.
