I don't get the reference on that Whole Burbank Catalog but the tracklist is kind of amazing

Ahh not familiar

Yeah, it was a staple of (post-)hippie culture; my dad had a bunch of editions on his shelf when I was growing up: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whole_Earth_Catalog

xpost I assume that's named for a cover of the Beatles song, which I admit is a pretty lame way to title your album. Looking them up, they apparently have one named.... "A Taste of Plumm."

I kind of doubt that they can work it out tbh, just based on the photo

is that Johnny Carroll a private press? it's pretty great (as far as this thread goes obv)

sans lep (sic), Tuesday, 11 December 2018 21:26 (five years ago) link

not exactly a private press but on a tiny independent that only had about twenty releases. there was a follow up to that album, perhaps inevitably called 'Touch Me Again'...

oh shit, that's not the first sylvester apparently. first one has versions of southern man and a whiter shade of pale on it, kind of want to hear that now

my name is leee john, for we are many (NickB), Thursday, 13 December 2018 23:12 (five years ago) link

This is from Joshua Gamson’s Sylvester biography. Fwiw, he places it in the context of the growing acrimony between Sylvester and his band:

“Sylvester does not appear on the back of the Bazaar album cover. Instead, there are pictures of the band members, and beneath them their own cryptic inside joke: “Why is the Hot Band smiling? Because they have S.O.M.F.” (“S.O.M.F.” was Hot Band code for Sit on my Face.) On the front is a photo of Sylvester, with long flowing hair, turquoise Indian jewelry, and light makeup. He is not smiling.”

(I tried and failed to upload a photo of the book page with the quote)

ah thanks bc! so somf in the sense that they've taken advantage of sylvester perhaps? but then the amyl makes no sense

This cover art concept is great (if you get the reference); and the track list looks terrific: https://www.discogs.com/Various-Whole-Burbank-Catalog/master/321050

What’s the final song?!

I just got a copy of this one a few weeks ago and the answer is a stereo recording of a train going though a crossing.

Mark Farner Band "No Frills"

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 2 January 2019 17:45 (five years ago) link

Grisso posted "No Frills" this past summer; I somehow failed to notice how much it reminded me of this exchange concerning Leo Sayer's "Endless Flight":

"Endless Flight" should be a picture of him looking at his watch on a commercial airplane

― 'arry Goldman (Hurting 2), Monday, August 4, 2014 4:52 PM Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

Passenger next to him is either (a) a buxom, eyelash-batting rocker babe, with Sayer mugging wild-eyed ("can you believe my luck, with this flight being endless and all?") or (b) a yakking grandma, shoving unwanted family photo album into Leo's lap (with other distractions surrounding: shrieking baby, record execs, cigar-smoking mustachioed old money type, etc). However, if photo is really cheap, everyone can just be quietly perusing an in-flight magazine.

I feel like there might also be a bell-shaped tourist in an xxxl Hawaiian shirt, his gut spilling over the armrest onto Leo

...with an implausibly large sandwich, also spilling its guts.
