getting older too

'why don't you do yourself in?'

two years pass...

is this the main the clean thread?

i've been giving some more time to Getaway lately. i've heard songs from it via the Anthology comp, but the album itself is wonderful. maybe their best full length? i don't really know what i'm talking about. i love the clean

Karl Malone, Friday, 22 January 2021 03:24 (three years ago) link

also i'm not sure which songs ira and georgia are on, but it could be any of them/all i guess. yo la tengo always resembled older clean songs in some respects, but by 2001 they seemed to be converging

Have you seen those clips of them live in Auckland from the early 80s? I want to be in that audience so badly.

Knee-level camerawork is severely underrated.

!!!

That's absolutely awesome footage. Is that their first time playing North Island?

notes on the clip say: This was a private show, other bands on the bill included The Chills, Tall Dwarfs, Nocturnal Projections and This Sporting Life. The show was not only was filmed by North Television but was also recorded on a TEAC 4-Track by Chris Knox and Doug Hood; some of the audio subsequently released includes "Flamethrower" by the Chills as one of two B-sides to the Rolling Moon single (1982) and "Two Fat Sisters" and "Happy Birthday John" by The Clean, released on their posthumous 12" E.P. Live Dead Clean (1986).

quickstep live at the rumba bar in 82 followed by anything could happen would be my top votes. Why does NZ have such great music?!

Jeez. The last time I saw the Clean, several years back, it was David who seemed under duress. Hamish always seemed to have it together, though I can imagine his politics made the last few years unbearable.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 1 December 2022 05:17 (one year ago) link

really hope he's found safe and sound

So, um, our Tyler, Tyler W., asked William Tyler for any news, and William Tyler apparently responded that Hamish had been found and was OK. But when I looked for the William Tyler tweet to post here, it had been deleted (?). So, Tyler W., any news?

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 3 December 2022 22:07 (one year ago) link

It seems Alley Records responded to the two Tylers that he is still missing:

Hey, William and Tyler, We are not hearing this from our friends in NZ, unfortunately — they are still still very concerned there about Hamish, as are we. Checked in with folks a few minutes ago after reading this thread.

awful

Evan, Monday, 5 December 2022 20:07 (one year ago) link

That’s sad. I’m sure there are people on this board who knew him well, but I’ll just say I met him at a party in Brooklyn circa 1999 and he struck me as a very likeable and unassuming guy. Easy to talk to. I bumped into him a few more times in that general period and then one last time about 20 years later in Williamsburg when he was shopping for clothes. He may not have remembered me but I couldn’t help remember him, he had one of those looks and one of those vibes you don’t forget.

JoeStork, Monday, 5 December 2022 20:28 (one year ago) link

Awful. An FB acquaintance and someone who always struck me as following his ideals fiercely and to the fullest. A terrible loss.

Very sad news. Such a tremendous band.

Chris L, Monday, 5 December 2022 21:38 (one year ago) link

every time i see a live video of theirs the audience is jamming out so hard -- that's Hamish's unrelenting drumming at work & i guess we were lucky to have it for as long as we did

RIP great band, big loss :(

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 5 December 2022 21:49 (one year ago) link

Here's from the last time I saw them, when a cranky David stormed off the stage and a fan begged the rest of the band to keep playing, which they did, with fans picking up the slack/guitar/vox.

RIP to a real one. Hamish was a staple at weird music gigs since I moved to Brooklyn 20 years ago. Didn’t know him really, but a lot of my friends and my wife knew him well. Devastating.

yeah i feel like he's up there with moe tucker as just a supreme 4/4 drummer, taking that straight-ahead thing into a cosmic realm

tylerw, Monday, 5 December 2022 22:15 (one year ago) link

totally. it's a perfect foil for the guitars. there's a video of "getting older" that i can't find where the audience is completely in a trance, everyone bobbing individually but also collectively. truly a beautiful sight

if you haven't checked out the bonus stuff from a recent reissue of Getaway, it has some of the best live Clean recordings I've ever heard — just unbelievable. https://theclean.bandcamp.com/album/getaway-deluxe-2016-remaster

tylerw, Monday, 5 December 2022 22:52 (one year ago) link

Sorry to say I'd never heard them (maybe even heard of them) till today. Played "Point That Thing Somewhere Else" off YouTube and loved it, so I ordered the compilation.

You're in for a treat. One of the most (almost accidentally?) brilliant bands of all time.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 5 December 2022 23:55 (one year ago) link

Thx for posting that.

Amusing fact in the ABC (Aus) article that had passed me by:

At their much talked about meeting in June, New Zealand Prime Minster Jacinda Ardern gifted Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese with a copy of The Clean's legendary 1981 Boodle Boodle Boodle EP.

The Clean probably via Grant Robertson (the Minister of Finance) who seems to be a legit FN fan - for better or worse. The Great Unwashed at #1:
