actually jisho.org looks pretty good for kanji purposes, maybe one of us mentioned upthread/zing

Still gets me a little stirred up when Midori and imiwa? have strange, rare, kanji readings like the second one here ふみ【文, 書】that I can’t find in any other learner’s dictionary.

So LingoDeer is going to paid subscription model, although prior users are grandfathered out of it for a little bit. Still, this Japanese- and Korean!- 2 course looks really good and seems to be worth it. Another two days to get the lifetime subscription.

I bought the lifetime subscription on the strength of level 2.

Can’t actually find such a character in a Chinese dictionary. Do find the inside, 斗 dǒu, which seems to represent The Big Dipper.

Simplified Chinese “map” is 图, pronounced tú, with old complicated character being 圖. So perhaps another case of different simplification.

Ah, and now I see same words with both the new and old kanji written out in the entry

I'm doing that in my spare moments but most of my time available is spent omg WaniKani and Bunpro. It's locking in grammar and vocab like nothing before.

So have been using three dictionaries apps extensively recently: imiwa?, Japanese and Midori. Perhaps I will organize my thoughts at some point and post about how they measure up to each other.

Just printed that out. Very interesting but some of it is hard to read, such as the green humble and honorific box on the back.

Okay, the Manabi app for learning to read Kanji now allows you to click and search in your dictionary apps

Can’t figure out quite how the よう works here.

I’m not sure the よう is necessary, where did the sentence come from?

Can’t quite parse this one either, same source.

On the first one it could be a really bad mis writing I of the volitional 泳ごう。 making it ‘He made me want to go swimming’ which seems a bit weird, but ok could work.

That last one you posted I just don’t know. I do get the sense that some of the less popular corners of Duolingo don’t get proofed very well. There’s a quite a few errors in the later levels of LingoDeer as well.

My reading is coming along by leaps and bounds I can recognise 750 kanji and I’m starting to do pretty well with teenage novels and manga.
