the very best thing about Last Mango In Paris is the sunglass-modified sunburn that Buffett has acquired on his Parisian vacation.

Greg "Fingers" Taylor - harmonica
I remember somebody I knew was going on tour playing bass in this guy’s band and it was supposedly kind of a big deal. Come to think of it there was another person from that place and time who lived in the same apartment complex and recorded with Sonny Fortune. /Idontknowwheretopostetc

The song "Last Mango in Paris" literally ends with him reading the words of the chorus off a bathroom wall.

Seems like he was trying to write a Warren Zevon song or something:

I had a third world girl in Buzios
With a pistol in each hand
She always kept me covered
As we moved from land to land

I had a damn good run on Wall Street
With my high fashion model wife
I woke up dry beneath the African sky
Just me and my Swiss Army knife

I ate the last mango in Paris
Took the last plane out of Saigon
Took the first fast boat to China
And Jimmy there's still so much to be done

yeah, scans as a jolly rewrite of "lawyers, guns and money" specifically.

I had a college housemate who loved, somewhat looked like, and seemed to model his persona on Jimmy Buffet. I couldn't help but like the guy.

I’d never heard of the Loss Leaders series... great mail-order copy here (now I see where labels like Matador got some of their schtick): https://www.discogs.com/label/41348-Loss-Leaders

This cover art concept is great (if you get the reference); and the track list looks terrific: https://www.discogs.com/Various-Whole-Burbank-Catalog/master/321050

What’s the final song?!

Warner was cool, man

Also found on some were humorous, bizarre interstitial audio material—clips from old records and movies, short skits, found sound, etc.--and most albums featured clever, humorous cover art and liner notes. Most of the 1970s albums were compiled and annotated by Barry Hansen, better known as Dr. Demento.

I don't get the reference on that Whole Burbank Catalog but the tracklist is kind of amazing

xpost I assume that's named for a cover of the Beatles song, which I admit is a pretty lame way to title your album. Looking them up, they apparently have one named.... "A Taste of Plumm."

is that Johnny Carroll a private press? it's pretty great (as far as this thread goes obv)

sans lep (sic), Tuesday, 11 December 2018 21:26 (five years ago) link

not exactly a private press but on a tiny independent that only had about twenty releases. there was a follow up to that album, perhaps inevitably called 'Touch Me Again'...

oh shit, that's not the first sylvester apparently. first one has versions of southern man and a whiter shade of pale on it, kind of want to hear that now

my name is leee john, for we are many (NickB), Thursday, 13 December 2018 23:12 (five years ago) link

This is from Joshua Gamson’s Sylvester biography. Fwiw, he places it in the context of the growing acrimony between Sylvester and his band:

“Sylvester does not appear on the back of the Bazaar album cover. Instead, there are pictures of the band members, and beneath them their own cryptic inside joke: “Why is the Hot Band smiling? Because they have S.O.M.F.” (“S.O.M.F.” was Hot Band code for Sit on my Face.) On the front is a photo of Sylvester, with long flowing hair, turquoise Indian jewelry, and light makeup. He is not smiling.”

(I tried and failed to upload a photo of the book page with the quote)

ah thanks bc! so somf in the sense that they've taken advantage of sylvester perhaps? but then the amyl makes no sense
