Lady Friend/Old John Robertson has to be one of the all-time great A-side & B-side singles. Such beautiful singing on Lady Friend, great horn parts too (in general, Byrds/Cros were writing really well for brass in this period).

Voted Why, even though I prefer the earlier version.

“Lady Friend” is rad in the way that it sounds like the Byrds! Like the Clark and McGuinn Byrds.

timellison, Thursday, 15 November 2018 21:03 (five years ago) link

Yeah 'Lady Friend' is possibly my all-time favourite Byrds song.

Gavin, Leeds, Thursday, 15 November 2018 21:18 (five years ago) link

"Lady Friend" in place of "Mind Gardens" would make this unambiguously their best album for me. Maybe it is anyway.

"Thoughts and Words" deserves some love somewhere here too. But having listened to everything again I'm afraid it's still "Why" getting my vote.

Love "So You Want to Be a Rock 'n Roll Star," even though it's as whiny and as condescending as "I Dig Rock and Roll Music." Which I also love. Which I guess means I love it when folkies and hippies get all holier-than-thou.

clemenza, Thursday, 15 November 2018 23:38 (five years ago) link

(If I'm not mistaken, they were really agitated by the imminent threat presented by the Monkees.)

clemenza, Thursday, 15 November 2018 23:43 (five years ago) link

well, I'm going to throw my vote to CTA 102. it makes me extremely delighted. my back pages probably the best composition here but as it isn't an original i'll do the right thing and give it to the cute aliens

i'm glad somebody's going to vote for this one, i love it but it's obviously slight so i couldn't justify voting for it

except for "mind gardens" i love all these songs, my favorite byrds record even if the dylan cover isn't their best and the version of "why" isn't my preferred version

Euler (Euler) wrote this on thread My vote for the worst song ever recorded on board I Love Music on Jan 16, 2006

I'll second "Mind Gardens" by the Byrds. Crosby's songs are usually terrific but this one is a disaster; and to boot, they put an "alternate version" on the Younger Than Yesterday reissue, which really must have been a funny prank for someone...

Maybe I haven't listened to "mind gardens" too closely... but I recall it just being an awesome tuneless haze of backwards guitars

brimstead, Friday, 16 November 2018 01:42 (five years ago) link

You see, it's about minds...in gardens, get it?

I love Mind Gardens! Don't really get the hate. Okay, maybe I do, it's probably the best example of Crosby's all-figured-out hippy soul poetry pretentiousness. But it still sounds great to me.

I'm not voting for it though. Having a hard time deciding which one to go for. I often think of 5D as their best, but this one probably is (and the next one's great as well) - and I'm saying that while I'm a massive Gene Clark fan.

Contenders: All four Hillman's songs (why did the OP only say "three great songs"?); CTA (McGuinn is my second fave Byrd after Clark after all); Everybody's Been Burned. Every song I didn't mention is great too!

Valentijn, Friday, 16 November 2018 07:41 (five years ago) link

The bonus tracks on this album are amazing: It Happens Each Day; Don't Make Waves; Lady Friend and Old John Robertson are all fantastic. The two alternate versions of album tracks are also really good - provided you actually like Mind Gardens.

I went with Time Between.

Valentijn, Friday, 16 November 2018 07:59 (five years ago) link

the best Byrds album. the best! has the same quicksilver amphetamine sound of blonde on blonde. I don't even mind the alien bit anymore, CTA is a great song.

'Thoughts and Words', because I love its melody and descending chord progression and also backwards 12 string ftw.

I think that maybe I'm dreaming becuz I'm having a hard time accepting that Renaissance Fair only got one stinkin' vote. It's the greatest song ever about Renassance Fairs.

unfair but at least it got something, "the girl with no name" wound up behind the challops vote :(

dub pilates (rushomancy), Thursday, 22 November 2018 03:52 (five years ago) link

I feel sad for the girl with no name, also being the girl with no vote. It's a lovely song.
I like that someone voted for Mind Gardens.

"Lady Friend" (terrible title) is one of their greatest, I think.

clemenza, Thursday, 22 November 2018 12:54 (five years ago) link

"Don't Make Waves" is not as bad as Crosby said it was but neither is it a classic.

Monica Kindle (Tom D.), Thursday, 22 November 2018 13:09 (five years ago) link

agree, it's not awful but it is completely disposable

dub pilates (rushomancy), Thursday, 22 November 2018 16:29 (five years ago) link

I was the ren faire voter
