Balboni's pathetic HR record standing for 30 freakin years is one of the most embarrassing things for any major league team

Why does this poll assume I have a "favorite royal" or that such a thing is even possible?

the royals aren't even that good at being the royal family - Diana was proof you can do it with more agility and charisma and populism.
that said, my grandmother's MBE for her work with adults with learning difficulties is her proudest achievement, and I kinda like that the source of that recognition isn't tied to a political party and the baggage that would entail. The royals are obviously not "politically neutral" but they have no real power, if they tried anything they know it would be game over for them.

afaict the Hanoverians have never been popular, apart from George VI, who was a late sub anyway.

I like how Liz's three sons have grown up to exemplify three distinct strands of overpriviledged dickholery - pompous windbag, sleazy moron and clueless imbecile.
― mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Saturday, 17 November 2018 00:17 (five years ago) link
that there was no option for: 'drag this lot into a dingy cellar for summary execution by machine gun fire' was the major failing of this poll.

i didn't vote but charles seems less bad than lots of the others idk
the worst one is zara phillips for winning SPOTY that one time

so you missed that charming interaction where Charles answered "I don't think so" when an Asian woman from Manchester replied that she was from Manchester. Heydrich was probably less bad than Himmler because he was part-Jewish and could play the violin etc...
― calzino, Saturday, 17 November 2018 00:57 (five years ago) link
After being introduced to the prince, she says he asked where she was from. When she replied "Manchester", he reportedly quipped "Well, you don't look like it", before laughing and walking away.
that was it.

they are royals
they don't have any power.

I do find something kind of admirable about Princess Anne's palpable contempt for the general public, and her disinclination to make any attempt to disguise this.
― soref, Saturday, 17 November 2018 08:58 (five years ago) link
I think it is Anne I met. She came to my university library and spoke to the student sitting next to me. The conversation, verbatim, was :
Anne: “ So why do you come here”Student: “this is where the books are”Anne: “Jolly good”
...and wandered off.

treesh, two-part question:
1) given the reforms previously enacted, and eg Dunstan in place as SA Premier, do you think the referendum non-binding postal survey of a year ago would have been required, had the dismissal not taken place?
2) do you think that first-hand accounts of community members committing suicide during the referendum survey campaign, unable to handle the rhetoric in media and from family members after lifetimes of ostracism, abuse, and legislated social downgrading, were false flags?
― sans lep (sic), Saturday, 5 January 2019 01:00 (five years ago) link
i think i was misinformed about the british monarchy. i thought their position was largely ceremonial in 2018. i have no positive feelings toward them, i just don't like ppl cheering death on anyone. you'll find this is consistent across my ilx posts cf. this year's dead pool thread.
― Trϵϵship, Saturday, 5 January 2019 01:31 (five years ago) link
i am never afraid to admit when i don't know something. i think we have a difference of opinion on what ilx is for. i learn things here and get involved in conversations on topics that i might not be an expert in. when i asked if the royals had done anything recently to warrant people wishing death on them that was actually just a question.
i doesn't bother me that you don't like me. please use the killfile feature if you are not interested in what i have to say. i would consider it a favor to me if you would do that.
