who ordered louis xvi executed? it was before Robespierre
No, it wasn't. Robespierre was the one who said, "Louis must die so France can live" - or something like that - though he was jumping on Saint-Just's bandwagon to some extent. Also Robespierre made sure he let everyone know that he'd opposed the death penalty when everyone else was for it, he was in favour of it for Louis but not some poor wretch who'd stolen a chicken or whatever.
― ROCK MUSIC (Tom D.), Wednesday, 14 November 2018 18:03 (five years ago) link
It was before the Committee of Public Safety and all that, but Robespierre was definitely instrumental in offing Louis Capet.

most of the current british royals seem like exceptionally spoiled and shitty ppl, to the point where i don't think i could really find someone to vote for in this poll. whereas when i read about the last romanov family, i always find myself feeling quite sympathetic for them. at any rate even if you think the tsar deserved a trial and execution i can't imagine anyone but the most lunatic tankie would cheer on the brutal massacre of young alexei and anastasia, etc., not to mention their servants and their *dogs* for fuck's sake.

theory: Prince Charles is a similar personality to Tony Benn in a lot of ways - in the later diaries Benn is forever coming up with plans and reports for how various problems could be solved, various institutions reformed and trying to press them into the hands of influential people in a way that reminds me of Charles and the black spider memos - this impression of frustration that they can't run things themselves, but coupled with untiring enthusiasm for their particular causes. I can imagine Charles looked on Benn's success in renouncing his peerage with envy - this impression that if only he wasn't cursed by being their heir to the throne then he'd be free to advocate for all his brilliant ideas without restraint. There's a bit in the diaries of Benn's personal friend and one-time political ally Chris Mullin where Mullin meets Charles and goes on at length about what a great guy he is, a serious thinker who is unfairly maligned, which seems a bit odd at first, but I think Charles reminds him of Benn. Maybe someone could write a novel set in an alternate timeline version of the 1980s where Charles becomes king and Benn becomes PM.
