I think my copy arrives today. We ave plans tonight and I'm out of town this weekend, so I told the kids to spend their time training, because when I come back I am going to kick their asses.

In all seriousness, my younger daughter is psyched to play as Villager. As a handicap she used to make me play as Jigglypuff, Ice Climbers and Olimar, because we could never figure out what they hell those characters were doing. Jigglypuff just fell asleep, iirc.

trying to make the important day 1 decision of playing with my own fucked up control scheme that my brain likes or brute forcing default controls until they feel natural so that if i ever play on someone else's system i dont have to be that guy that has to set up a new profile before playing

fyi after kirby and mario your first actual unlock in world of light is a choice between marth, sheik, and villager, so if you want a particular one of those 3 asap then just go into world of light to get them quick

classic mode feels like the fast way to unlock characters playing solo, the runs are pretty fast and you get a challenger at the end of each

world of light is cool but it's a lot of stuff

up to 42 characters or so, this takes a while even if you get one every 10 minutes

this game is amazing. Kirby's down special is taking me places, and I refuse to develop additional skills or fighters.

I’ve watched the world’s #1 smash player, zero, on twitch the past two days. He used a trick to unlock every character quickly. Pretty much all he had to do was play whatever he wanted for a while to raise overall distance travelled. Then he switched in-game language (to quickly reset) and maybe he switched logged in user while doing so (?). Then he played the first level of classic mode (I think that mode) and quickly killed himself. A new challenger appeared every time. He then beat the challenger and repeated the trick by going back to the change language screen.

I realize ppl are going to want to cheese the unlocks but I’d rather just play the game for a few days, I’ll have the characters for the whole rest of time I don’t need to have non-fun this weekend

Played a bunch last night with my kids. Fun but pretty much the same as the Wii U version.

tbf being on the Switch instead of the Wii U is a significant upgrade

silby otm on unlocks. But most of the characters are new to me, so each unlock is exciting. I have broken away from my kirby spamming ways to play as young link with a playlist full of saria's song.

i'm just clearing classic mode with every character to get unlocks and also learn/relearn what all the characters do. i did a few hours of world of light but didn't find any of my preferred chars yet so it was slow going

my taste in characters may have flipped since the last time i smashed, i'm liking the heavies this time whereas i used to avoid them. DK in particular used to be my least favorite char in the original but i'm liking him now. ganondorf is still 'slow captain falcon' but he has way more tangible weight to his attacks now and feels a lot more brutal.

it never really occurred to me until they put ryu in smash that mario was basically ryu in the original, he had the hadoken and the shoryuken and the tatsumaki

out of the newbies i think isabelle seems the most fun

spent waaay too much time playing the Spirits mode last night. only unlocked maybe 8-10 characters, but I guess i can grind Classic if I want to push it

I don’t have Isabelle yet but I quick matched against someone who did last night and she is wild. The fishing rod is crazy

she's just villager with a couple abilities changed afaict

i've got everyone unlocked now but havent tried any of the new folks yet

I kinda wanna get this, but explain me the appeal - is there more to it than streetfighter 2 button-mashing, with better graphics and characters? that's fine, but don't want to over-expect what i'm getting

i am a fighting-game agnostic at best but i've been v much enjoying it, not just as a fun game in its own right (which it def is, even in single-player) but an incredibly lavish celebration of a huge range of videogame history

never really got into this series, but curious about dipping back in with this one.

Smash Bros has always been waaaay more button mashy than Street Fighter btw, so be warned if that's a concern. xp

I am so bad at this game. Bf is maining Lucario and I'm faffing about trying to unlock Cloud so I don't feel so bad about losing constantly

it's like any other fighting game in that it's as good as the worst internet connection in the game. the only difference here is that it's on a system that most people use on wifi so the average connection quality is worse, and you may be playing with 4 players instead of 2

OK, first family match done! I won, a lot, but not all the time, surely due to playing with the stupid joycon vs. my favored Pro, but also not really knowing what anything does. Tons of fun, of course.

yeah if you like Super Smash Bros., this is the best version on Nintendo's best console, and you should get it. If you have friends, this is not the most accessible thing to do with your friends on Switch (that's Mario Kart), but it's more accessible than a "real" fighting game.

literally just got mario kart yesterday to have something to play with my best friend's kids on xmas

I don't know how to sell Smash to someone who's never played it before. I'd say it's sui generis but some stripped down imitators have been developed in recent years, some of them well-regarded, so it's more accurate to say it's genre-defining. It's both a deep competitive game and a goofy party game with lots of explosions and chaos and getting to play Bowser vs. Pikachu vs. Princess Zelda vs. the dog from Duck Hunt.

Watching my kids get their butts kicked online right now.

We recently got a pretty big TV, but part of the fun of Smash is that when more than two of us are playing we typically have no idea what the fuck is going on. There's the three+ of us bouncing around, all the other creatures/action, the moving arenas ... it's just chaos!
