Wait that's that SONG?!?!? WTF people?!?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:41 (nineteen years ago) link

That's "Carnival," "Lovefool" goes "love me, love me, say that you love me, fool me, fool me, go on and fool me" has a vid with the band as a message in a bottle and was in Baz Luhrman's Romeo & Juliet.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:42 (nineteen years ago) link

haha, the high placing is kind of strange. One of those overrated underrated songs I guess.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:42 (nineteen years ago) link

ILMers be loving soppy indiepop!

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:42 (nineteen years ago) link

Are 'The State I Am In' and 'The Stars Of Track & Field' both still to come? I lose any sense of wider reality when it comes to Belle & Sebastian.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:44 (nineteen years ago) link

"The Stars of Track & Field" is like 46, I think.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:45 (nineteen years ago) link

We already had "The Stars of Track & Field" (#45 I think) and yes, I believe "The State I Am In" is yet to come.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:45 (nineteen years ago) link

#5. "#1 Crush" - Garbage

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:47 (nineteen years ago) link

i am finding the list quite funny alba!

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:47 (nineteen years ago) link

and baffling obvs.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:47 (nineteen years ago) link

as long as mary j blige beats the cardigans all will be well

tricky (disco stu), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:48 (nineteen years ago) link

"Lovefool" is a victory for all the great late 90s lounge pop.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:49 (nineteen years ago) link

I am baffled by the Cardigans. I remember it very clearly, I just never liked it or realised that so many did.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:49 (nineteen years ago) link

"Real Love" was my #14. I don't think it has a chance, but I've been totally wrong about my estimations for that so far so maybe it does. I'd love to see it.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:50 (nineteen years ago) link

The Cardigans???

If Everlong doesn't make it I swear to God I am gonna kill all you motherfuckers.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:50 (nineteen years ago) link

Haha, I actually hate "Lovefool", but I kinda love how it took by surprise everyone waiting for a indie/rap/techno three-way tie.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:50 (nineteen years ago) link

SURPRISE SLEEPER "HEY JEALOUSY" IN THE TOP 20 IT COULD HAPPEN

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:50 (nineteen years ago) link

I almost voted for "Real Love," but then I listened to it again for the first time in a few years and found it less thrilling than I'd remembered.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:51 (nineteen years ago) link

#21

BELLE AND SEBASTIAN - "The State I Am In"

(520 pts, 24 votes, 2 first place)

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000007WND.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

"The lyric to 'The State I Am In' is quite good. The scene in the opening verse is fantastic and original. The part about the crippled child bride is puzzling and hard to phantom (as Mandee likes to say) -dependence, resentment, the self-serving aspect in helping others. It reminds me of Symphony Pastorale and The Sweet Hereafter."

OTM.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:52 (nineteen years ago) link

I would've been more positively surprised had "Find Me (Odyssey to Anyoona)", "Rhythm Is a Dancer", "The Key, the Secret" or "Rhythm of the Night" made the list, but I guess there's little love for Europop here.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:52 (nineteen years ago) link

ha - at first i thought that said 'everlast'!

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:52 (nineteen years ago) link

if everlong doesn't make it blame me for not voting thirty

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:53 (nineteen years ago) link

all the "prediction" tracks are popping up BEFORE the top 20. Either beauty or horror awaits.

Cool, thanks Gear. (x-poat)

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:58 (nineteen years ago) link

I like "Shine", but I don't think it was even nominated.

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 23:00 (nineteen years ago) link

I think it's amusing that American's didn't even deign to nominate our version of rock-revival schlock that dominated our airwaves in the 90s while the Brits still seem totally enamored with their version.

Alex in SF I kiss you

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 23:02 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't even know what this rock-revival schlock is! I can only think of Oasis and they've hardly figured at all.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 23:03 (nineteen years ago) link

I can't believe Dre and the Geto Boys won't be in the top 10, but a lot of stuff shocks me.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 23:03 (nineteen years ago) link

already had 100, 000 fireflies and, now, the state I am in.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 23:04 (nineteen years ago) link

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 23:05 (nineteen years ago) link

"no diggity" will be top fifteen at least

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 23:06 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh, and '100000 Freflies'. Whoops. I am a useless pundit. Err - stick in... 'Music Sounds Better With You' then.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 23:06 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm still hoping for Everybody In The Place, but I realise this is probably futile.

RickyT (RickyT), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 23:10 (nineteen years ago) link

woah woah woah I assumed this "shine" that kept being mentioned was some techno track (almost rhymes with "chime"). You guys were talking about COLLECTIVE SOUL?!?!?!?!?!

WTF vote for "Cumbersome" why doncha jesus m crow wtf.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 23:12 (nineteen years ago) link

(I guess there should have been a rule that only one, maximum two tracks per band/artist to be allowed in but we have gone too far)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 23:13 (nineteen years ago) link

WHOA HEAVEN LETYOURLITE*SHINE*DOWN

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 23:13 (nineteen years ago) link

If "Shine" makes the top 20 I'm gonna tie y'all up, cover your mouths and nostrils with Local H and Weezer bumper stickers and throw yer asses in the drink.
