Somehow I think a random game in a park somewhere would provide more entertainment than this game
― calstars, Saturday, 10 November 2018 01:26 (five years ago) link
there was a lot of moving the pieces around

carlsen played the sicilian both games with black which no one expected and they both were pretty boring draws anyway lol

will this be the best WC of modern times? imo....maybe

hard not to lol a little now remembering all the "here's why professional chess is actually really exciting" pieces from the past month

So is chess gonna be all done forever soon or what
― I have measured out my life in coffee shop loyalty cards (silby), Tuesday, 27 November 2018 00:53 (five years ago) link
no
this match was notable for pathological avoidance of risk. we just need players who don't mind losing so much

Ahhh.
― I have measured out my life in coffee shop loyalty cards (silby), Tuesday, 27 November 2018 01:32 (five years ago) link
feel they didnt play totally conservatively, like caruana played a gambit one game carlsen played the sicilian every time, imo it was more a combo of playing pretty conservatively being insanely prepared and just being too good? like in the computer analysis at the end of the game itd be all 1 inaccuracy 0 mistakes 0 blunders 6 centipawn loss every time except some games there were zero inaccuracies
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 27 November 2018 06:06 (five years ago) link
there were a bunch of times in a post game breakdown where the commentator wld be all caruana must find the absolutely best move here and then he just wld, idk these guys are machines
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 27 November 2018 06:08 (five years ago) link
tho carlsen has prob lost half a step
that is also fair. to avoid risk against players this strong you have to be so good

I'm liking the Smith-Morra Gambit opening for white at the moment. It gets you some quick attacking opportunities and you can beat weaker opponents pretty quickly imo.

i was getting bored playing the roy lopez so often so i started playing the london system and they've generally turned into really exciting games w/ lots of possible sacrifices and sharp positions - i highly recommend if you're looking for something new as white

i didn't know there was a chess thread at ilm.
my fave opening to get some nice open positions with attacking potential is the king's gambit. especially from's gambit with tactical chances on both sides is a treat.
with black i like to play french after e2-e4 or the wolga gambit when d2-d4 is the first move. that is more of a positional gambit that pays off in the long term.

I need to learn my openings :( I know first two moves and that's it, none of these terms
Also my late-game is garbage
― flamboyant goon tie included, Tuesday, 20 August 2019 13:43 (four years ago) link
I’m kind of stumbling into learning the openings just by playing a lot. I knew the IG position had to have a name and the chess.com interface told me, pretty convenient.
― calstars, Tuesday, 20 August 2019 14:13 (four years ago) link
feel like u learn openings just by playing them over and over and fucking up, i mean u cn watch videos/read but thats secondary to getting the reps
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 20 August 2019 14:29 (four years ago) link
think the end game is a lot abt calculation and some principles like infiltration and active pieces, putting yr king in the middle of the board, bishops being better than knights especially when the game is being played on both sides of the board
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 20 August 2019 14:33 (four years ago) link
but yeah calculation so often games are won by a king being one square closer to something than the other king
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 20 August 2019 14:35 (four years ago) link
also knowing when yr position is favorable to entering the end game which is often p tricky
got bored decided to try to attack more is more fun am worse at chess but feel like itll make me better in the long run

Couldn’t agree more. Have to remind myself to have fun while playing (or else why play) and sometimes that means willfully exploring interesting positions

have any of you had any luck joining real-world chess clubs or anything like that? i enjoy playing online but sometimes i miss playing w/ the actual board and pieces. also feel like i need more reasons to leave the house besides work.
― (The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Wednesday, 11 September 2019 21:22 (four years ago) link
I played at a volunteer event at a local junior high school, it was great. And the real board and pieces threw my off my game completely, ended up getting bested at least twice. I might join a local club but I have so little time. Another idea I had was to have one of the local bars promote a chess night but haven’t done this yet
― calstars, Wednesday, 11 September 2019 22:48 (four years ago) link
joining a club seems fun, i live in the middle of nowhere but maybe if i move back to the big city
― lag∞n, Thursday, 12 September 2019 02:44 (four years ago) link
i have played in clubs in my teens in the 70s and later on i founded a club in the 90s. i stopped playing "serious" games in clubs after my youth as it took too much time and i didn't have fun anymore playing those long games for hours and hours. when we founded the club in luxembourg for a while we played in pubs and brought our own games and clocks. we played either blitz or 30 min per game per player games. i loved it. for a year or so i played with a member of the scottish olympic team and lost almost every game. one reason being that i always played king's gambit with white which makes very open games with attacking chances on both sides. i haven't played chess for almost 20 years. what i also loved about our little club, we drank and played. we just played for the company and not to win. it was great.
