definitely considering VR just for this game. still dope without it tho

diamonddave85 (diamonddave85), Friday, 9 November 2018 23:52 (five years ago) link

I plotzed over a few hours into Horizon Zero Dawn in the other thread, but getting a decent way through the game, there are a LOT of rough patches (just starting with the facial animations and the uneven game mechanics, the ) -- like, how is this one of the PS4's best selling games ever?

And yet, the main story line has grabbed me! (Which I know goes against the general ILG ethos, but IMAMAVERICK.)

This was cool. Taking a classic Tetris player and plugging him into VR for the first time.

xp i don't think horizon is one of the best selling ps4 games? maybe if you only count first party games

ciderpress, Sunday, 11 November 2018 05:56 (five years ago) link

It’s a question that’s actually probably not best suited to Wikipedia: this chart looks more like I’d expect (which is to say, depressing)

Andrew Farrell, Sunday, 11 November 2018 08:30 (five years ago) link

Huh I'm not sure where I got the best selling thing from!

But anyway, some of the world building is so moving and breathtakingly epic.

Captain Hardchord (Leee), Sunday, 11 November 2018 09:25 (five years ago) link

Wow, EU is out-buying NA, and not just for FIFA titles. What's up with that?

Nhex, Sunday, 11 November 2018 17:56 (five years ago) link

NA is more split between ps4 and xbox, EU is full on sony territory

ciderpress, Sunday, 11 November 2018 17:58 (five years ago) link

Ah, that makes sense

Nhex, Sunday, 11 November 2018 17:59 (five years ago) link

Yep UK is still relatively balanced but there are plenty of EU regions where the combined market share of Microsoft and Nintendo is still sub 10%.

JimD, Sunday, 11 November 2018 18:02 (five years ago) link

anyone gonna pick up that new tetris?

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Sunday, 11 November 2018 19:40 (five years ago) link

Yeah I played a bit last night. Mizughuchi would 100% be my favourite developer if only his taste in music was a bit less cringey.

But yeah it's already my favourite Tetris ever. And I've only played in 2d so far, haven't got round to plugging the pace in yet.

JimD, Sunday, 11 November 2018 21:32 (five years ago) link

Er pace? psvr.

JimD, Sunday, 11 November 2018 23:14 (five years ago) link

damn thanks for reminding me it's out

Looks cool, but also looks like something I'd prefer on the Switch. Can't imagine playing Tetris on my TV.

Nier Automata is $20 online for Best Buy's Black Friday, so I'll be getting that despite my demo experience. I assume the sale price will only be in effect around BF time?

I Got Stopped By a Lady Cop on my Automobileee (Leee), Tuesday, 13 November 2018 20:27 (five years ago) link

Oh whoops I checked the Reddit thread and it said it starts on 11/22.

I Got Stopped By a Lady Cop on my Automobileee (Leee), Tuesday, 13 November 2018 20:33 (five years ago) link

i thought the demo (at least the one i played) was awful. it wasn't fun, and it didn't really capture what the real game (which is fun and addicting) is actually like to play.

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 13 November 2018 20:34 (five years ago) link

just finished playing nu God of War, it's absolutely fantastic, go buy!

Ah good 2 kno!

I Got Stopped By a Lady Cop on my Automobileee (Leee), Wednesday, 14 November 2018 02:18 (five years ago) link

in case you do get the full game, let me save you some potential heartache: just turn down the difficulty all to way to easy at the beginning. the beginning of the game is identical to the demo, but the boss is kinda difficult (i thought, at least) and if you die, you have to go all the way back to the beginning (about 25 minutes back). i died a few times, like an idiot, and also played the demo a couple times, so i going absolutely insane after playing the first 25 minutes of the game 5 times before ever getting to see anything else.

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 14 November 2018 02:28 (five years ago) link

oh yeah for some reason theres no save point or checkpoint in the intro sequence. i think i managed it first try without knowing that but no shame in turning it down and then back up once you get to the 'real' part of the game where you have latitude to actually practice the combat

ciderpress, Wednesday, 14 November 2018 02:35 (five years ago) link

i whined about it in the nier thread, but what's really frustrating about is that the rest of the demo is suuuuuper easy, like there's no way you can possibly die. and then all of a sudden a 400-foot tall machine is murdering you

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 14 November 2018 02:41 (five years ago) link

karl otm, put it on easy until after the first boss fight.

to emphasise: the whole game has no auto-save, saving is done from the pause menu or in save terminals sprinkled throughout the game world but in the prologue neither of those are available yet, so any death and it's back to the very beginning. really, just play it on easy until that's done with

chihuahuau, Wednesday, 14 November 2018 04:03 (five years ago) link

Thanks guys, I'll try to remember that when I actually own the game and start in on it.

Switching topics, I think there aren't many posters still wondering about the Slim vs Pro difference, but this seems like a nice summary:

For one thing, despite the much-vaunted 4K support, it’s been more of a compromise than a revelation. As exhaustively shown by all sorts of technical breakdowns, these images are often not native, or true 4K; that would take more computing power than the Pro can handle. Instead, they use upscaling to massage a lower-resolution image into 4K, in concert with advanced rendering techniques. The drumbeat of games that harness the console’s pseudo-4K capabilities has remained steady, especially among system showpieces like Horizon Zero Dawn, but the impact on performance remains undetectable to many laypeople. And when it comes to frame rate, the increased resolution can sometimes come at a cost to performance, so it really depends on your preferences as a player. If you’re willing to sacrifice the console’s 4K capabilities, however, the “performance modes” of God of War and Monster Hunter: World can balance some of the frame rate spikes and troughs that might otherwise take you out of the game, resulting in a decidedly smoother experience.

The PSN prices are basically the same as the BF physical prices +$2, pretty tempting to just say screw it and add more to the infinite digital backlog that is then completely forgotten about

Nhex, Friday, 16 November 2018 18:51 (five years ago) link

WHAT THE-- Best Buy already sold out! Fortunately was able to get it from Gamestop.

Way back when you guys recommended Witcher 3. Is it just sort of an open world GTA/RDR sort of Rockstar game, where you wander around doing missions? Is it fun? Is it super-challenging and complicated/arcane, like Dark Souls? Or is it easy to get into? It's on sale on the PS site. Same with Fallout 4. Is that one just kind of a FPS or is there more to it? Same thing, is it fun? Complicated? Easy to get into?

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 25 November 2018 20:45 (five years ago) link

open world - it's HUGE and you have a horse and you can generally go anywhere you want to pretty early on.
RPG - tells an elaborate story featuring many other characters, you level up your character and gear. there's crafting.
action/adventure - you swing a sword, you need to be relatively dexterous. it's not nearly as difficult as dark souls 3, but you have to pay attention.

it is very fun. it is one of the best big budget games of all time. it has almost TOO much content, imo - i never got close to finishing it because i kept on doing all the side quests and wandering around, exploring. after about 50 hours i had burned myself out and probably got through less than 1/3 of the game. whoops. i hope to return to it someday.

it is approximately 4232340052721.32 times better than fallout 4

Karl Malone, Sunday, 25 November 2018 20:53 (five years ago) link

Sold. One of the reasons I was excited about getting a PS4 this late in the (er) game is that most of the good stuff has been priced down to $15-$20, which is low enough for an impulse purchase, even if I won't get around to playing them for months.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 25 November 2018 21:40 (five years ago) link

oh, also! you probably already did this, but whenever i'm thinking about getting a new game i check out a Let's Play or twitch stream. just for 5-10 minutes, long enough to get a feel for the gameplay, not long enough to spoil anything.

Karl Malone, Sunday, 25 November 2018 21:41 (five years ago) link

Yeah, it looks pretty cool. I've never played any open world games, but this one seems like you can make it almost anything you want it to be. Fight monsters? Check. Follow the main plot? Check. Doof around? Check. Explore and enjoy countless sidequests? Check. As long as it looks good I think it's at least worth dipping in.

Also bought Wolfenstein: New Order/Old Blood two-pack for $15. That's cheap.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 25 November 2018 21:51 (five years ago) link

witcher 3 is v v good i think you will be happy with it josh

Mordy, Sunday, 25 November 2018 21:55 (five years ago) link

the appeal of witcher 3 is the writing and setting and all the ridiculous side stories imo. the combat is mostly bog standard sword and sorcery action stuff but the worldbuilding is great

ciderpress, Sunday, 25 November 2018 22:13 (five years ago) link

the combat has enough novel / interesting stuff in it that it's not a total waste

Josh in Chicago you should play Breath of the Wild

L'assie (Euler), Sunday, 25 November 2018 22:21 (five years ago) link

Speaking of backlogs I finished AC Black Flag tonight. I really want to get to the Paris one but I also am nuts and like to play series in order so I gotta decide if I play Rogue and Freedom’s Cry first 🙄

L'assie (Euler), Sunday, 25 November 2018 22:23 (five years ago) link

Rogue is fun, Freedom Cry is short and a bit too familiar, and the Paris and London ones both suck. Debating picking up the Egypt one but the two before it left a bad taste. The only two ACs I didn’t finish.

EZ Snappin, Sunday, 25 November 2018 22:33 (five years ago) link

I’ve heard that the Paris and London ones aren’t great, but I know the cities well irl and I want to play in them. I’ll be delighted to get to Egypt and Greece in 2022 or whatever

L'assie (Euler), Sunday, 25 November 2018 22:44 (five years ago) link

Yeah, the cites are fun in Paris and London. Shame about the game you play in those locales.

EZ Snappin, Sunday, 25 November 2018 22:45 (five years ago) link

ive been told the egypt one was kind of a gameplay reboot it and odyssey are more just witcher 3 clones than full on stealth/assassin games like the old ones

ciderpress, Sunday, 25 November 2018 23:56 (five years ago) link

Yeah, it looks like Odyssey should have been called The Greeker. At least Origins is literally the first dude so he’s just learning.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 26 November 2018 02:12 (five years ago) link

Josh, I actually regret playing Witcher 3, mainly because I spend be $40 on a game that ultimately I did not find fun. The writing didn't impress me, I never latched onto the characters, and the size of the game is just exhausting. Also, its developer is transphobic and seems to have sympathies to gamer gate.

I loved the card game in it, though.

Newsted joins this band and quickly he’s subdued (Leee), Monday, 26 November 2018 05:28 (five years ago) link

On the plus side, it was only $20 for me, so I only have to enjoy it half as much as you did. Looking around, the amount of praise this game has garnered is kind of crazy, but like I implied before, after I finish Dark Souls (which is not so difficult or imposing that I even have to say "if") it'll nonetheless be a bit before I dive into another complex RPG action system, let alone another Soulsborne game and certainly not an endless open world game like Witcher. I think first I need to finish Doom (it was getting pretty repetitive, and I think I have a ways to go), then I might try the Uncharteds I have, or God of War, but I have a hunch my family got me Spider-man for Chanukah, so that might be the best palette cleanser.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 26 November 2018 13:29 (five years ago) link

Having to spend too much time learning crafting and spells and alchemy destroys otherwise great games for me.
I've barely scratched the surface of Witcher 3 or Skyrim as I don't have what it takes to give a shit about collecting ingredients for recipes.
