Joe Lhota's work is apparently done. The chairman of the MTA announced on Friday that he has resigned from the position, a surprise to many after he insisted last month that he wasn't going anywhere. The 64-year-old Cuomo appointee was rumored to be considering an exit, after facing scrutiny for potential conflicts of interest posed by his numerous side gigs. He will continue to serve as chief of staff at NYU Langone Health, director of the board at Madison Square Garden, and board member of the Friends of the Brooklyn-Queens Connector.

In a statement, Lhota told the Wall Street Journal that he accepted the public position last year for the "sole purpose of halting the decline of service and stabilizing the system for my fellow New Yorkers." While it may not feel like it, that ambition was in fact achieved, according to a man who has not ridden the subway since President Obama was still in office, five hundred thousand or so years ago.

"Joe Lhota has dedicated decades of his life to public service culminating in two tours of duty at the helm of the MTA," Cuomo said in a statement that referred to the mass transit system as a war zone....

The city has zero plan to move people via anything other than private or for-hire vehicles, so we're entering an era in which a small amount of snow will combine with an already crushing amount of traffic to just shut the whole system down. https://t.co/AHef7Br5Ut

Asked if Judlau, the contractor that won the $477 million contract to fix the tunnel, will still be working on the project, Ferrer said, "We'll be renegotiating the scope of work and the project itself." Does he know how much it will cost?

"I don't know the answer to that question," Ferrer replied. "I don't know if anyone does...On this new project we believe it can be done within the envelope."

Cuomo refused to promise that it would take a maximum of 20 months, calling it a "silly question."

"Less time, less work, equals less money, but I am a monster to negotiate with," Cuomo said.

It’s time NYC got it’s fair share.
The majority of MTAs capital budget has been sunk into massive projects that benefit LIRR & MNRR customers.

That tweet/chart combo is a tad misleading. He refers to the whole "capital budget" but the chart only reflects expansion programs within the budget. In reality it's more like 75% of the capital budget goes to NYC transit (which may still be out of whack, but not nearly to the degree suggested there).

feel like this post is not gonna go over well but I read this and was... not overly impressed with the framing of it. very squalor-porn, some questionable details. like, if you're going to write about a bunch of subway stations in harlem and the bronx to contrast with times square and long island city, it might be a good idea to reach for different metaphors than "the monkey habitat at the zoo"

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Thursday, 28 March 2019 21:22 (five years ago) link

yeah, that whole pieces flippant vibe was enraging. if anything the NYT should be doing an expose on how the MTA's lack of bathrooms leads to people pissing and shitting on platforms and in cars.
