teacups!

self (alomar lines), Friday, 9 November 2018 03:28 (five years ago) link

Teacups is one I tend to skip. I like most rides, but that one is too much spinning for me.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Friday, 9 November 2018 03:33 (five years ago) link

ppl are either teacup or no teacup i have found, not a lot of inbetween

self (alomar lines), Friday, 9 November 2018 04:49 (five years ago) link

also on my "sad to have missed" list: carousel of progress, the monorail, slinky dog, the avatar river ride, spider-man and the jimmy fallon thing at universal. geez we actually managed to cover a lot of ground in 3 days!

Spider Man was ok but it was just another Universal 3D + smoke + fire type ride like F&F and Kong but with more falling

Snow White ride has made our 3 year old terrified of rides

Sufjan Grafton, Sunday, 6 January 2019 03:17 (five years ago) link

Mine carts or spooky adventure?

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Sunday, 6 January 2019 03:18 (five years ago) link

It was the ride by the castle in disneyland. We sat in a thing that transported us to different rooms where we were harassed by the same witch. Then it abruptly ended with a sarcastic painting of a book that said "storybook ending"

Sufjan Grafton, Sunday, 6 January 2019 03:28 (five years ago) link

yeah, that is a pretty scary ride, and they even toned it down a bit from the old days.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Sunday, 6 January 2019 03:38 (five years ago) link

I have to admit that some of those Walt Disney rides scared the fucking shit out of me, including the Snow White one where you go right up to the fucking witch.

And now Alfred can start planning on being in line so Kylo Ren can threaten him. Or seduce him. Whatever works.

They better have Mold-A-Rama kiosks where you can get an encased Han Solo.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 28 February 2019 07:02 (five years ago) link

They better allow you to become encased in carbonite full stop. I want to be a prop in someone's den who they suddenly thaw out to the delight of curious partygoers.

Ah here we go. Prepare your reviews:

“R-3X is a radio DJ so he’s pulling music from across the galaxy,” said the executive creative director for music at Disney Imagineering, John Dennis. So while there will be some traditional, John Williams cantina influence, he’s largely playing what Disney thought Batuu pop music might be. For example, when we saw and heard R-3X , he was playing what could only be described as “Jawa Hip Hop,” with a thick beat under all the “Utinnis” you can handle.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 28 February 2019 20:13 (five years ago) link

Track has leaked iirc:

For Star Wars fans, two things have always been true. It’s a world we all dream of visiting but will never actually be able to. [...] None of it exists. It isn’t real. That is, until now.

Last week, io9 was among a select group of press to visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge[...] Everything is muddy. There’s scaffolding everywhere. You have to avoid large pipes and walk on thin two by fours across huge holes. This is not remotely close to what fans will experience when the doors open later this year and yet, it’s already one of the most exhilarating places I’ve ever been.

You get to actually stand next to the Millennium Falcon, for crying out loud!

And, later, when you pay for the privilege, instead of being in a small, select group of press, you'll be able to eat an overpriced hot dog, while sweating in a crowd of decidedly un-StarWarslike tourists in shorts, tee-shirts, and giant mouse ears, all milling around the Millennium Falcon and squealing, or whining, or gabbing, or holding their phones in the air taking videos. Which may not be quite as exhilarating.

you haven't been in a while. Even the fast food's good.

It’s called Black Spire Outpost for a reason: Batuu is a planet made up of spires, but one in particular stands out. Sitting in the middle of the outpost is one spire that’s much blacker than the rest, and that’s how Black Spire Outpost gets its name.

been seeing articles about how Galaxy's edge is not crowded and a failure. was there a week ago, and I promise you it was crowded (though we didn't have to schedule a visit). the worst part is the creepy dudes pledging allegiance to kylo ren in the park because you know they are trump voters.

BREAKING: Epcot Will Be Divided into Four "Neighborhoods" Through Reimagining; World Discovery, World Showcase, World Celebration, and World Naturehttps://t.co/88wjtefGOf pic.twitter.com/ZYyzNN3gI2

Hmm. At the very least a radical, or even modest, reinvention of Epcot will give a reason to go to Epcot, currently probably the most skippable of the parks.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 25 August 2019 20:31 (four years ago) link

On the contrary: it's the park we never skip (World Showcase is never not fun), whereas I've been once to Hollywood Studios in the last 20 years.

Do you not love the magic of film

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 25 August 2019 20:37 (four years ago) link

I love Epcot, but they could do so much more with it. A facelift is a good start.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Sunday, 25 August 2019 20:40 (four years ago) link

Eh. Last time I was there we were pretty bored beyond the food, and there is only so much food you can eat. At least Hollywood has a couple of good rides.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 25 August 2019 20:58 (four years ago) link

If you find Epcot boring, you're drinking it wrong.

McGrief the Crying Dog (Old Lunch), Sunday, 25 August 2019 21:10 (four years ago) link

I mean, when in Epcot, drink! But there are better places to drink than Epcot.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 25 August 2019 21:16 (four years ago) link

I've said it before, but I love pretty much all the food in Disney World. Animal Kingdom in particular has some great stuff, and the park's broad dedication to employing people from the regions represented by its restaurants is a master stroke.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 25 August 2019 21:18 (four years ago) link

The best eating/drinking discovery from our last trip was Nomad Lounge in Animal Kingdom. We spent a ridiculous amount of time just chilling on the patio.

McGrief the Crying Dog (Old Lunch), Sunday, 25 August 2019 21:58 (four years ago) link

Is that the little cocktail lounge near Pandora? My wife and MIL enjoyed some time there while I puttered around the avatar stuff with my son.

AK has the best fast food of the four parks, but, wow, WDW food has improved hundredfold since my childhood visits. You can't go wrong anywhere.

As good a thread as any to note that one of the new Disney+ series, The Imagineering Story, is an enjoyable enough overview of the whole park system's history. Various points glossed over -- 'labor disputes' are mentioned elegantly more than once by the narrator, Angela Bassett, which, yeah, ABOUT those disputes. But they've interviewed a slew of people who are still around or were closely working with many original team members, and the sheer amount of crisp, color behind the scenes footage -- there's a ton from the original construction of Disneyland itself, which I just didn't expect at all -- combined with the slew of anecdotes and images makes it worth a watch. Also, more than a few studies about how various areas were redone as necessary. First episode is about Disneyland and the initial Florida purchases up to Walt's death, the second covers Roy's caretaker work to get WDW going, the creation of Epcot and also of Tokyo Disneyland, and that's all that's available so far.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 18 November 2019 15:56 (four years ago) link

Way back when they put out these awesome metal-tin DVD collections of pretty much all Disney shorts and non-fiction stuff, I wonder if that Imagineering stuff is part of that.
