princess of hell (BradNelson), Saturday, 3 November 2018 22:01 (five years ago) link

Have never been able to get into Rising Tide as much as the other SDRE albums but I'll keep trying.

^ Me on the emo poll thread - it's now one of my favourite albums of the '00s.

it's the law that you have to tell me what you think of the fire theft and/or jeremy enigk's solo career after this

princess of hell (BradNelson), Sunday, 4 November 2018 18:19 (five years ago) link

the fire theft album: it's nice and pretty, doesn't blow me away, but then again I'm only halfway through it so it still has time

imago, Sunday, 4 November 2018 20:46 (five years ago) link

as soon as I posted that the album got better haha

This all seems... bizarre. I'd love to hear another SDRE record though.

the goldsmith/grohl beef drums on

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:26 (five years ago) link

In The Trap Set interview - which is a good listen - he is kinda pissy about Grohl, with good reason imho and interestingly very direct about how Dan Hoerner is apparently a terrible person, also a lot of his family seem to have had battles with alcohol with tragic results, so perhaps he's some kind of grudgeful drunk poster.

MaresNest, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:47 (five years ago) link

I knew he held no love for Grohl, the supposed "lost album" was a new twist to me.

one day in the late 90s i was minding my own business reading a SDRE interview, and then william goldsmith starts describing his approach to playing drums, and that with every snare hit he's trying to "crack the earth" so that his dead sister might one day rise up through it... i swear that quote flashes thru my mind monthly

!

ufo, Monday, 24 January 2022 21:52 (two years ago) link

the lost album goldsmith was rambling about years ago was just their unfinished attempt at recording a new album after the 2009 reunion, right? it was pretty well-established that they'd written new material & tried to record it after the reunion tour but the sessions didn't end up going anywhere for whatever reason?

ufo, Monday, 24 January 2022 21:56 (two years ago) link

Wow, after hearing Will Goldsmith talk about Dan Hoerner on that Trap Set podcast a few years back, I figured they were done forever.

I think he may have also talked about the "lost" album in that interview, too? iirc, it was just the sessions that "Lipton Witch" came from; I think they had a few other half-finished songs before they split again.

cwkiii, Wednesday, 26 January 2022 19:41 (two years ago) link

i didn't become a fan of this band until How It Feels which I still rank very highly; I saw them on tour for the Rising Tide and thought it was great, so I'll likely check this out.

akm, Wednesday, 26 January 2022 19:53 (two years ago) link

XP - That was my first thought too, he was very robust about Dan, to say the least.

weird, I really hated the Rising Tide up above, but now I think it's excellent.

akm, Saturday, 19 November 2022 22:43 (one year ago) link

It's their best album.

ArchCarrier, Sunday, 20 November 2022 08:34 (one year ago) link

Rising Tide is all time. What a masterpiece. That album was my introduction, and nothing I've heard from them topped it.

octobeard, Sunday, 20 November 2022 08:55 (one year ago) link

It was my favorite of theirs last time I thought about such a thing. That was a long time ago, though.

Wow i think i just “never got to” Rising Ride, tho I liked HIFTBSO— this is v good.

There is a vocal tone and like, guitar crescendo thing going that now makes me think of manchester orchestra a lot.

Rising Tide is a prog masterpiece

imago, Sunday, 20 November 2022 18:04 (one year ago) link

They play Denver Dec 4. I am v poor at going to shows, but damn, I think I am there. Reports?

xp FYI, their December dates were just posponed, due to drummer's broken hand (we had tix for Dec. 12).

they're doing a diary 30th (oof) anniversary tour and putting out a rerecording of the album

https://www.instagram.com/p/C2dA-oWPQOS/

this clip of the rerecorded "blanket was the stairs" sounds excellent

ivy., Tuesday, 23 January 2024 19:33 (two months ago) link

I'll have to check that out, highly, highly suspect of bands rerecording stuff like this.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 23 January 2024 19:41 (two months ago) link

I remember the 15th anniversary show at Metro in Chicago - one of the band member's wives was pregnant and it was the first time Metro had a no smoking policy for a show. My how time's change.

BlackIronPrison, Tuesday, 23 January 2024 19:42 (two months ago) link

the circumstances of this re-recording are a little weird, not sure how i feel about this happening when nate mendel isn’t currently in the band (whatever interpersonal and professional conflicts that required them to reunite again without him notwithstanding, i don’t pretend to know about these things, glad they’re touring it’s awesome) and god knows the reason i love diary and LP2 is the particular dynamic of these guys playing together, maybe the first time i heard a non-jazz record where i felt like a whole world was being opened up just through interplay, a feeling i think is a little lost on the records they made when they first reunited without mendel, even though both of those records are insanely good

but also that studio clip sounds dope, and one of the flaws-that-is-a-feature of diary is how ruined his voice is from the tour they did right before recording it, and i’m interested in how he’ll approach it with a not-ruined voice. notice he’s taking a lower register in the verses which admittedly sounded painful to sing on the og

i went digging and some instrumentals from the unfinished 5th album sessions during their last reunion leaked a while ago and the band's confirmed they're real. hoerner's said he's not happy with the songs at all though so they're probably never finishing or releasing those.

ufo, Friday, 26 January 2024 05:47 (two months ago) link

that "new" song (it dates back to how it feels) is outrageously beautiful
