This is the first song in a long time I can recall being improved considerably by being heard in conjunction with its video.

i had an emotionally traumatic experience at an ex's party last night so now "party for one" is the greatest song i've ever heard

i am definitely feeling this song

i feel like it's the perfect salve for emotional trauma involving exes. it's light and soothing.

watching a few faces light up after having their first drink and this song comes on

how the hell is "cut to the feeling" one of the most praised songs of her career

I don’t really like this song, but thematically it’s a nice variant on her thing where she makes songs about being right at the beginning of some great transcendent experience, full of anticipation. This time it’s not some budding romance but a withering one and she’s excited to reconnect with herself? I mean I know it’s about lol masturbation but that’s my takeaway.

my favorite part of this song is the "i'm not over you"/"i'm not over this" backing vocal

drum solo after "back on my beat" also

I appreciate that she actually says "makin' love to myself" rather than some rote euphemism

Love her music, but Carly's videos are almost always terrible and this one is no exception. Like, even ignoring the egregious product placement, it just seems like it was conceived by a high school drama class.

but this... is itself a euphemism?
anyway, this song is like 90% of the way to being great and I think I've figured out what the 10% is -- there are some unfortunate things happening with the vocal production on the verses. most apparent on "some-BODy's in your way"

How in god's name did "Cry" not make it onto the album proper? (also, did we ever poll the B-sides collection of this album?)
― enochroot, Monday, 24 June 2019 12:27 (four years ago) link
Yeah "Cry" is the standout from Side B by far
I don't think I voted in this poll because I got on the CRJ train a little late but "Never Get to Hold You" is what I would vote for now. That song sounds like the warmest hug
