Love it. This bodes well for the new album.
The syncopation in the chorus was the hook for me. Also that rim-shot percussion that announces the drop in the chorus.

i think the 'back on my beat' line in the chorus doesn't quite resolve in the sort of satisfying way i'd want it to and that's what i dislike? but it's still pretty good and growing on me

ufo, Thursday, 1 November 2018 12:41 (five years ago) link

I'm generally not super into her singles but this is p good, if not a million miles removed from the last album sonically

lol not available in canada :(

This song sets its sights on being just okay.

You like queer? I like queer. Still like queer. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 1 November 2018 14:00 (five years ago) link

It's a nice single, but I'm surprised she's played it so safe. Feel like this would have fit perfectly on Side-B.

kitchen person, Thursday, 1 November 2018 14:23 (five years ago) link

as far as first singles go i think this is much better than “i really like you,” it isn’t nearly as weighed down

princess of hell (BradNelson), Thursday, 1 November 2018 14:36 (five years ago) link

otm

kinda curious to see if this ends up being a tight focused record or (given how prolific she's said to be in the studio) a huge stat-juking behemoth

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Thursday, 1 November 2018 14:40 (five years ago) link

way better video at the very least

would be ok if we got a ridiculous double album since all 26 songs we got from the emotion session were good to great

ufo, Thursday, 1 November 2018 14:50 (five years ago) link

Big fan of “I Really Like You.” );

Are the 3 or 4 posts upthread on "Cut to the Feeling" the sum total of the discussion that song received here??

greta van vliet (morrisp), Thursday, 1 November 2018 18:31 (five years ago) link

this is nice, would order the lead singles as follows:

I Really Like You => Party for One => Cut to the Feeling

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Thursday, 1 November 2018 20:21 (five years ago) link

Cut To The Feeling was just a standalone single for a film track. i presume you mean call me maybe?

and xp: there's another, longer thread for carly but there wasn't a whole lot of conversation there about Cut To The Feeling either

monotony, Thursday, 1 November 2018 21:00 (five years ago) link

No, "Cut the Feeling" -- it was huge on Twitter, I guess, haha (and a great song).

greta van vliet (morrisp), Thursday, 1 November 2018 21:07 (five years ago) link

I consider it a lead single, that's how it was treated

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Thursday, 1 November 2018 21:07 (five years ago) link

good song, but a notch under the Emotion singles, imo. i'm hoping they're just getting her back in the public consciousness and the next one is the real banger.

Surely not. It came in #3 in last year's Tracks Poll.

Ah cool

greta van vliet (morrisp), Thursday, 1 November 2018 21:31 (five years ago) link

This is the first song in a long time I can recall being improved considerably by being heard in conjunction with its video.

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Friday, 2 November 2018 11:47 (five years ago) link

i had an emotionally traumatic experience at an ex's party last night so now "party for one" is the greatest song i've ever heard

princess of hell (BradNelson), Friday, 2 November 2018 14:49 (five years ago) link

i am definitely feeling this song

macropuente (map), Friday, 2 November 2018 15:04 (five years ago) link

i feel like it's the perfect salve for emotional trauma involving exes. it's light and soothing.

macropuente (map), Friday, 2 November 2018 15:06 (five years ago) link

it also makes me wish i was still djing at a gay club

macropuente (map), Friday, 2 November 2018 15:08 (five years ago) link

watching a few faces light up after having their first drink and this song comes on

macropuente (map), Friday, 2 November 2018 15:09 (five years ago) link

how the hell is "cut to the feeling" one of the most praised songs of her career

rmde

dentyne ice, Saturday, 3 November 2018 02:18 (five years ago) link

I don’t really like this song, but thematically it’s a nice variant on her thing where she makes songs about being right at the beginning of some great transcendent experience, full of anticipation. This time it’s not some budding romance but a withering one and she’s excited to reconnect with herself? I mean I know it’s about lol masturbation but that’s my takeaway.

crüt, Saturday, 3 November 2018 02:30 (five years ago) link

my favorite part of this song is the "i'm not over you"/"i'm not over this" backing vocal

princess of hell (BradNelson), Saturday, 3 November 2018 05:05 (five years ago) link

drum solo after "back on my beat" also

princess of hell (BradNelson), Saturday, 3 November 2018 05:10 (five years ago) link

I appreciate that she actually says "makin' love to myself" rather than some rote euphemism

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Saturday, 3 November 2018 05:14 (five years ago) link

Love her music, but Carly's videos are almost always terrible and this one is no exception. Like, even ignoring the egregious product placement, it just seems like it was conceived by a high school drama class.

enochroot, Sunday, 4 November 2018 12:15 (five years ago) link

she’s got some good videos! (“run away with me” and “your type” in particular)

but this... is itself a euphemism?

anyway, this song is like 90% of the way to being great and I think I've figured out what the 10% is -- there are some unfortunate things happening with the vocal production on the verses. most apparent on "some-BODy's in your way"

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Sunday, 4 November 2018 21:38 (five years ago) link

seven months pass...

How in god's name did "Cry" not make it onto the album proper?
(also, did we ever poll the B-sides collection of this album?)

enochroot, Monday, 24 June 2019 12:27 (four years ago) link

Yeah "Cry" is the standout from Side B by far

I don't think I voted in this poll because I got on the CRJ train a little late but "Never Get to Hold You" is what I would vote for now. That song sounds like the warmest hug
