||||||||, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 15:39 (five years ago) link

I was hoping for news of a new iMac. Have to see if the mini is a suitable alternative

i need a new macbook and/or mini but these prices are hard to justify

Can the new MacBook Air run a big 4K monitor in clamshell mode?

droit au butt (Euler), Wednesday, 31 October 2018 10:59 (five years ago) link

june 2017 ipad pro would almost be tempting if they'd bumped the price down. new ipad pro is 760 funbucks and the cheapest apple cover is 85 and that's only for the 8GB model

||||||||, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 21:30 (five years ago) link

new air is 20% too expensive

||||||||, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 21:30 (five years ago) link

too diffuse a range of products makes it too frustrating to min-max plus post-brexit weakness of the pound has pushed prices uncomfortably high. there's just no sweet spot, as far as I can see in the range

||||||||, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 21:31 (five years ago) link

if the new pro started at 128GB for the 760Β£ model and the smart cover 45/55Β£ worked then it might have been the_one

they've been holding off on revealing their real product line for like 5 years, it's all been just a gas

1. inflate price of all products
2. hide device sales

calamity gammon (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 2 November 2018 12:16 (five years ago) link

what does "inflate price of products" mean?

Sell hardware at higher profit margins

DJI, Friday, 2 November 2018 16:03 (five years ago) link

I'm kind of surprised there isn't, like, an SEC or GAAP requirement for a business that sells a consumer product to state how many units of that product it sells.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Friday, 2 November 2018 16:22 (five years ago) link

is there any evidence that apple are selling products at higher profit margins?

support physical mediaaaaaaaaa

Nhex, Friday, 2 November 2018 18:09 (five years ago) link

ipad pro seems pretty big for anything except actual work IMO

π” π”žπ”’π”¨ (caek), Friday, 2 November 2018 18:32 (five years ago) link

FWIW, my main book and comic reader is a iPad Mini 3. If I had to get something now, I'd probably get that $329 9" iPad. You don't have to spend iPad Pro money on it.

Physical media won't let me back it up in multiple locations and will be a big problem when climate-change enhanced fires burn all of California down. Portability and redundancy forever!

It's the backing-up-in-multiple-locations thing that's causing climate-change enhanced fires tho.

My 10” Pro is rapidly becoming my main computer. Did all the work on the site from it this morning. I think I’ve used my work Mac for about 20 minutes this week, and that was to pull together a presentation from three other decks. (iOS still sucks horrifically at multiple docs in the same app)

stet, Friday, 2 November 2018 20:35 (five years ago) link

We've owned 3 ipads and I never found a use for them. My kids like it, which is another reason not to have it around.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Friday, 2 November 2018 20:45 (five years ago) link

For a company that prides itself on design, I actually don't find them comfortable to use at all. Any intensive tasks are much more comfortable to do on a laptop, and anything less intensive I'd rather just do on my phone.

I prefer reading comics on my iPad mini 3 to my iPad Pro 10.5”. On the pro, the scans get big enough that they suffer if they aren’t super hi res

Any iPad with a retina screen and 128gb or more of storage will serve u well as a comics reader imo

otm, after that initial period of subscribing to magazines i never got around to reading there didn’t seem to be any point. maybe as they get close to being an actual macbook proxy for most people (now?) they’ll find a place for most people.

for me the clincher is not being to type on your lap without it all going everywhere. the smart keyboards are pretty solid but it’s still precarious.

calamity gammon (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 3 November 2018 01:15 (five years ago) link

I love the pro I bought last year, but I find I don’t use it as much as I’d like because I cannot use it around my 5yo.
