murder is not, technically, a violation of our TOS

It's cool how twitter has a button for "I want to show this tweet to my followers" and a button for "I like this but I don't want to show it to my followers" and they're just gradually reversing what the two buttons do

Twitter (mostly Jack) has a lot of problems w/r/t hate speech and who they ban/who they allow. But the medium is imo by far the best and most interesting of all the social media platforms. it's the only one that's idiosyncratic and isn't completely antiseptic like FB or straightforward IG. they need to either fire Jack or get serious about their hate speech priorities but I really hope it doesn't die, it's the only dynamic social media platform out there.

flappy bird, Monday, 29 October 2018 18:54 (five years ago) link

yeah the way they've handled the hate speech and the harassment and the bot stuff has been bad but I'm not sure that's the same issue as the other stuff we're talking about

k3vin k., Monday, 29 October 2018 18:56 (five years ago) link

my experience of twitter was not remotely dynamic, it is often a bunch of self-impressed people shouting identical jokes

princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 29 October 2018 18:57 (five years ago) link

and it was even this way in 2015 before the world ended and after severely culling who i followed

princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 29 October 2018 18:58 (five years ago) link

it's entirely up to the people you follow and how interested you are in reorienting your brain to the peculiarities of the site. I don't doubt you had a bad experience but one's experience is mostly dictated by those you follow, how often you check it, how much you like viral phenomena and are fascinated by the way memes spread (like I am).

flappy bird, Monday, 29 October 2018 19:00 (five years ago) link

I follow around 400 people and I actually like the "so and so liked this tweet by this person you don't follow" feature. also I love how direct from brain it is - yes, it is a cesspool because people are sick in the head. I find this fascinating, and often exhausting... but I'd really like to see FB go down and Twitter survive. IG can stay.

flappy bird, Monday, 29 October 2018 19:02 (five years ago) link

the fact that they straight up said the TOS doesn't apply to fascists with power kinda says it all

frogbs, Monday, 29 October 2018 19:03 (five years ago) link

i will say that twitter being inextricably wrapped up with my career (media) probably poisoned me toward it early

but also everything you've described is awful flappy

princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 29 October 2018 19:03 (five years ago) link

i used to think it was amusing to idly observe the behavior of people who were demented but now that they are in charge, the thrill is gone

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Monday, 29 October 2018 19:08 (five years ago) link

I'm in the same boat re: work, it's the only reason I'm still on FB and I hate it... the reticence to ban hate speech is disgusting but I guess ymmv as far as the functionality of the site. I just love how chaotic and insane it is. and it's not exactly a picnic, I get insane people yelling at me in my menchies (hehehehehehe) all the time. But at the same time I appreciate the insight it allows into everyone's thought process, because it so lends itself to impulsive behavior and revealing moments. I understand why this sounds like hell to some people though.

flappy bird, Monday, 29 October 2018 19:09 (five years ago) link

why would you want to know anything about anyone

several people here and elsewhere referencing twitter's forthcoming sell-off to be a factor in removing the like button. idgi? why would that make it a more attractive company to buy?

Karl Malone, Monday, 29 October 2018 19:39 (five years ago) link

imo its something about how the cowards ratio is fucking up the algo to big up nasty shit people are afraid to repeat

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 29 October 2018 19:43 (five years ago) link

Karl my read is that they're just trying new product directions every quarter or so to see what it does to their metrics so they can shop them around again. Like last year it was 280 characters, this year it's removing favs, next year it's gonna be a new button where when you click it it electrocutes your genitals

faving is at the very heart of social media life

this is the very reason why it has to go

not really, I am a writer and I have received threats and people have found my phone number before and my address once. But I don’t engage anymore than I have to now - I just scan

flappy bird, Monday, 29 October 2018 21:07 (five years ago) link

i almost never look at facebook anymore but i still check twitter like a madman

lag∞n, Monday, 29 October 2018 21:47 (five years ago) link

I spent the weekend logged into Twitter and I still like it but it sucks

I have measured out my life in coffee shop loyalty cards (silby), Monday, 29 October 2018 21:48 (five years ago) link

twitter's good for talking to acquaintances who are too distant to ever expect them to want to, like, text you

twitter for sports is good. wish the music discussion would come back here tho, convos just come and go so quickly and everyone moves on to the next thing within hours.

saw some study that purported to show that basically all youths are deleting facebook with increasing rapidity which is cool, of course they do own instagram too

lag∞n, Monday, 29 October 2018 21:50 (five years ago) link

Hi, sorry to just come in and blurt out nothing relative to anything, but I have registered for Twitter, mostly as a way to help get the word of my documentary and upcoming music out into the world.

I know nothing about Twitter, so please excuse my lack of etiquette.

just type your most deranged thoughts in the box then tap tweet

lag∞n, Monday, 29 October 2018 21:53 (five years ago) link

So, what do I use ilx for, then?

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Monday, 29 October 2018 21:54 (five years ago) link

to talk about basketball

lag∞n, Monday, 29 October 2018 21:55 (five years ago) link

So, what. . . like, just type the lyrics to Kurtis Blow's 'Basketball', hit submit, and see if anyone disagrees?

worth a "shot"

lag∞n, Monday, 29 October 2018 21:57 (five years ago) link

yeah sports Twitter is generally very good esp. during games

frogbs, Monday, 29 October 2018 21:59 (five years ago) link

using decent search terms, twitter is good for learning about local news as it's developing. for example, last week a car drove through the front of my local grocery store. so i just typed in the name of the grocery store, sorted by "latest", and it was the quickest way to find out wtf happened

Karl Malone, Monday, 29 October 2018 22:02 (five years ago) link

it's also good for yelling at dumb politicians and never, ever getting a response

Karl Malone, Monday, 29 October 2018 22:02 (five years ago) link

love to yell at famous people online

one time i went outside and it smelled weird and i figured out what it was just by typing [my location] smell into twitter search lol

a lot of ppl are against this behavior but like we have proof that the actual president checks his mentions so why wldnt u take a shot on him knowing that you want him to choke on his own shit

lag∞n, Monday, 29 October 2018 22:09 (five years ago) link

i try to yell at politicians in the most natural way, possible. i don't force it, in fact, i try not to do it. i just wait for a particularly incredibly dumb politician to break me out of my rational zone and then just fucking go for it. "THIS will the clever tweet that ends his presidency". then, several hours later, after it attains 1 Like by someone who appears to have posted only NowThis videos for the last 3 years straight, i delete it

Karl Malone, Monday, 29 October 2018 22:11 (five years ago) link

one time i replied to hillary "please leave us alone" and it got RTed into maga twitter and i felt kinda gross so i deleted it

lag∞n, Monday, 29 October 2018 22:12 (five years ago) link

also ive made that same reply to hillary on a number of occasions, its my standard hillary reply
