I thought I understood what hatred for a human being was before, but it turns out that I really didn't. It's so deep and consuming and multifaceted, and it's sometimes triggered by the simplest things. Like for example an umbrella carelessly left outside an airplane door. Such an utterly contemptible person, of no worth whatsoever and a complete burden on everyone.

a friend of mine, normally mild-mannered and not particularly political, posted something recently like, "i have never in my life wished as fervently and frequent for someone to die as i wish for donald trump to die."

As someone on Twitter pointed out, the logical endpoint of the president's statements is that it's time to give antifa guns.

The logical endpoint is civil war, but no one's going to *give* antifa guns. A fair fight isn't the plan. And there will be nothing sexy about that civil war.

I know someone who used to work in a photo lab who was taken off her machine one day because the accident investigators from Newark Airport had sent in photos of what happened when a runway crew member got distracted, backed up too far, and was sucked into a jet engine. Apparently it was as if someone had hurled several buckets of red paint into a high-speed fan, and the manager decided to process the images himself rather than make any of his employees do it.

The apparent spark for the worst anti-Semitic massacre in American history was a racist hoax inflamed by a U.S. president seeking to help his party win a midterm election. There is no political gesture, no public statement, and no alteration in rhetoric or behavior that will change this fact. The shooter might have found a different reason to act on a different day.
