seeing this again tonight, I think, as the local theater has in fact arranged a showing

gbx, Saturday, 27 October 2018 23:13 (five years ago) link

I guess I missed all screenings.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Sunday, 28 October 2018 00:50 (five years ago) link

didn't read the whole thread but i saw this last night and i loved it
Mandy herself was the highlight and I loved the scenes of their dull domestic life before everything went haywire
the soundtrack elevated everything, like a fancy beer can make a sandwich taste better

i did read enough to see this and i agree

Mandy (the character) was easily the most fleshed-out person in the entire movie - we get to know her tastes, a bit of her work, a bit about her past, and a lot about her personality from how she handles Jeremiah. so when she dies it feels like a real loss that alters the fabric of reality, not just a cheap bit of character motivation - so much so that all that's left for Red is revenge-movie, horror, and fantasy tropes to process his grief (see also the animated sequences).

also i really want a mandy tshirt

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Monday, 29 October 2018 13:09 (five years ago) link

Do you think this monologue was meant to echo Silence of the Lambs? (Clarice STARLING...)

I thought Jeremiah was styled to recall Buffalo Bill (especially after Mandy rejected him), so you may be right.

And I'm a little envious of those of you who were at screenings with appreciative audiences. The audience at my screening was so silent that when I laughed I thought I'd committed a faux pas.

Accattony! Accattoni! Accattoné! (j.lu), Monday, 29 October 2018 14:56 (five years ago) link

Among the elements which recalled Lynch's work was most definitely the discordant clash of tones, those moments which are simultaneously horrifying and hilarious and the viewer is left feeling uncertain about how they should respond to what they're experiencing in a given moment. It's understandable that the same scene might induce laughter and uncomfortable silence from different people/audiences.

I mean, the experience on the whole was oppressive as fuck and I was left feeling like I'd been dragged behind a truck for two hours but I definitely cracked up a few times.

a butt, at which the shaft of ridicule is daily glanced (Old Lunch), Monday, 29 October 2018 15:07 (five years ago) link

i did not find it oppressive at all tbh
my partner and i both loled several times and mostly i found it engrossing

life has me feeling pretty low and this movie did not make it worse at all. i consider that a success! the soundtrack is really the thing that ties it together and makes it work imo.

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Monday, 29 October 2018 15:08 (five years ago) link

it's definitely got that Lynchian 'wake up laughing at something terrifying' vibe about it

one of the jeremiah acolytes looked sort of like buffalo bill to me (esp in profile) but i didn't consider it an allusion to SOTL, or even the starling thing.
really i don't enjoy hunting for references to other works when i watch a new one. i would rather just see if i can enjoy it at face value.
if the references pop out too strongly, i don't consider that a good thing. if they are hidden i think i like to let them remain so? idk

i liked it

gbx, Monday, 29 October 2018 18:19 (five years ago) link

princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 29 October 2018 18:20 (five years ago) link

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Monday, 29 October 2018 18:23 (five years ago) link

there's a little square that says "COMING SOON" on top of the image of mandy on shudder and i guess it will be live within the next few days.
that would be nice.

This was one of the most primal films i’ve ever seen. Jung comparisons otm.

I can’t even try to unpack the rest of it now but the scene where he forges a Dark Souls war blade has literally no lead up whatsoever but also ‘acid fried cenobite biker gang’ is the perfect lead up...

my opinionation (Hamildan), Tuesday, 30 October 2018 00:03 (five years ago) link

I kinda feel other films might have had at least one line of dialogue earlier to set up that he has access to a forge, an interest in crafting weapons or something...

The fact that he wordlessly feels he has to craft his own weapon pulls this deep into some Joseph Cambell/Odysseus/Descent into the underworld headspace.

also w/o real lead-up: apparently he has a past murky enough to require leaving his crossbow in the safe-keeping of an old guy in an trailer

i did not like this movie.

kurt schwitterz, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 04:40 (five years ago) link

I also took from the bathroom scene, that Red (& Mandy?) was a recovering Alcoholic and thats why the unlabeled hooch was hidden in a drawer in the bathroom. Red also declines a drink in the opening shot when they are leaving the forest.

So him hitting the moonshine was a return to the death wish, self destruction spiral that Mandy had saved him from...

this movie would have been better if it held back on the silliness a bit. you know what scene im referring to

. (Michael B), Tuesday, 30 October 2018 11:33 (five years ago) link

It may have seemed silly to you, but I can't say for sure that I won't attempt the MacGruber defense when Nic Cage inevitably comes to revenge kill me in my subterranean lair.

just watched this under the worst possible circumstances - on an iphone, on a train, frequently interrupted by my daughter waking from sleep - and was still fucking mesmerised

best possible circumstances would be sitting in the woods at night, watching the entire film painted on a series of vans, being driven past you in a clearing

Bought the bluray which I did not expect to see so soon. Says it's a HMV/Fopp exclusive, no way that can be true.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Saturday, 3 November 2018 09:56 (five years ago) link

Blu Ray is... The VHS special edition sold out on day1.

Some going for £50 online.

my opinionation (Hamildan), Saturday, 3 November 2018 17:25 (five years ago) link

I saw the VHS style edition but there were regular bluray editions too, which was what I got and it had a sticker about the exclusivity.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Saturday, 3 November 2018 18:34 (five years ago) link

Liked this, maybe it needed a little something more but the usage of Mandy's face was quite striking, the guy laughing with the chainsaw was hilarious and the scene in the club/venue was quite touching. The animated scenes could have been better. Hellraiser comparisons make sense but I'm also reminded of the bikers and colored lighting in Hobo With A Shotgun (which were some of the few things I liked about that film) but done much better. Julie Bell did Mandy's drawings and paintings, I havent heard about her in years, probably the biggest blast from the past in this film and one that hasnt kept the same fan following and doesnt have the same cred as King Crimson or even the metal influences. Maybe Panos is testing us with the percieved uncoolness of Motley Crue and Julie Bell?

Loved it up till the Mandy title card. It then became a grief/revenge fantasy where time and space did not have to jibe, though not without its visual moments. Recommended for readers of reddit/iamverybadass.

WmC, Tuesday, 27 November 2018 17:23 (five years ago) link

imo the idea that Cage's character is some badass that people will aspire to be like is short-circuited by the narrative choices. we get his bizarre weapon crafting in lieu of a "training for revenge" montage. he pops out fully-formed as something that seems like a second force of darkness that opposes the one that ruined his life and the surreal nature of the entire thing sticks it in a different category from a lot of "badass guy is unleashed" movies

mh, Tuesday, 27 November 2018 17:55 (five years ago) link

100% otm, it’s way more surreal than yr traditional revenge movie
