Led Zeppelin Opening Tracks:
Immigrant Song: If Zep didn't want to be a singles band they shouldn't have put out a single this good. Two and a half minutes of howling Viking fury. Completely misleading as well, as the rest of the record is Bert Jansch-inspired folk with a long blues work-out in the middle.
Black Dog: Hard as it is to hear this utterly overplayed song as anything but a tired cliche, this call-and-response howler is a particular high point of an absolute murderer's row of an album, and is probably still introducing vulnerable youth to the degenerate world of "classic rock". After all, what's more "classic rock" than seducing twelve-year-olds?
Achilles Last Stand: Epic prog! Their heroin-soaked Gotterdammerung still goes by quicker than the half-the-length epic opener to their fifth album.
Whole Lotta Love: The all-time cock-rock song in a genre (trouser) stuffed to the gills with them. I like the psychedelic horseshit mid-section, myself.
In The Evening: Not terribly surprising that the opening cut on their stab at Vegas opens with a throwback to Page's ancient "violin bow" gimmick. A husky-voiced Plant channels the ghost of Fat Elvis, equal parts swagger and lethargy.
The Song Remains The Same: Rides in an an all-time sloppy Page riff, but after the rollercoaster ride of the first instrumental section they can't figure out how to bring in Plant - so they play the prog card and throw in a vocal section that clashes garishly with the opening riff. What's the point in holding back your secret weapon for a minute and a half if this is the best you can do with it?
Custard Pie: The central metaphor matches "Whole Lotta Love" in crudeness, but not in raw power. Page's riff is a B+, A- at best, John Bonham is typecast as "John Bonham", and 1975 happened to be the peak of the unfortunate "white boy Clavinet" fad. Still a great song, but one that becomes utterly forgettable by the time the phasing kicks in on "The Rover".
Good Times Bad Times: Yeah, the opening riff is great, but once the shock wears off what's left is one of the weaker songs on the record.
We're Gonna Groove: _Coda_ tracks are always going to come out on the bottom, but credit where credit is due, this is a great high-energy concert opener and suffers only by comparison with their other openers.

― Monte Scampino (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 21 September 2020 18:26 (three years ago) link
It's the only Larsen collaboration I listened to and it did nothing for me, and haven't heard the subsequent ones.
Fabulous Muscles hit me at the wrong time. The title track was inferior to the version that appeared on the split EP, and "I Luv The Valley" was a XITSJ song. The rest of the album sounded so in-the-box, like, entirely made on an SP-303 (I don't actually know if this was the case). "Bunny Gamer" and "Crank Heart" are not important songs to me, I was missing the gamelan and the sound of a room. La Forêt was the same but even worse. The Air Force came back in a big way-- pop hooks were back, and Saunier-recorded drums were highly welcome. It wasn't until Angel Guts that Xiu Xiu got back into "full-tilt tunelessness" but it was coupled with miraculous production choices-- it and Basket Of Fruit are watershed "hi-fi noise" albums, in my view
― flamboyant goon tie included, Monday, 21 September 2020 18:38 (three years ago) link
Angel Guts remains my favourite production credit in Congleton's discography tbh! It's an amazing sounding record even if the criticisms levelled at certain lyrics on it are for reasonably reasonable reasons

I can follow. I agree the tt is inferior to the EP version. I only knew the XITSJ 'Valley' after I had heard this one. I do hold 'Bunny Gamer' and 'Crank Heart' dear, and i love 'Clowne Towne'. But I agree I that "full-tilt tunelessness" is where they shine. 'Basket of Fruit' makes me really look forward to the new album proper, which has been finished, he's said recently!

And here's the top seven worst alcohols:
1. 99% of white wine (esp. oaky ones, Chardonnay, i.e.)2. Liqueurs, other than the orange-y classics (Aperol, Campari, both acceptable)3. Bourbon (syrupy whiskey? keep it)4. Heavy reds-- they taste nice but bring heartburn and a maudlin mood5. Anises6. IPAs7. Vodka-forward cocktails (although: a night of shots of potato vodka, such as Luksosowa, and the psychedelic hangover, is a once-every-couple-years luxury)
Here are my favourite three cocktails:
1. Corpse Reviver #22. Pimm's Cup3. White Negroni

Alsatian white is generally excellent. And North American takes on English ale are almost systematically better than the real thing (or rather, what’s left of it seeing as an ABV above 3.8% is viewed as hard liquor there).IPA is good not bad despite its connotations on this side of the pond.

have to disagree with this. some nice stodgy CAMRA-friendly ale served one slightly cool from a cask is usually better than BRIT BASTARD BITTER or whatever

Seconded. I should've included it in my list, just ahead of gin.

Oh yeah I kind of thought of Calvados in the same brainbreath as "cognac/poire/grappa". I was trying to remember what it was called as I was typing but just thought "all the fruity high-% liquors go here"
Grappa is my wife, though, I intend to stay dry and healthy til I'm 80 and then just drink grappa all day til I'm stinky and dead
Disagree with "North American takes on English ale" being better-- nothing nicer than a cask ale served at the correct temperature in a smelly damp pub. Though my controp abt this is that the Guinness they make in North America is slightly better than actual Guinness

back in my drinking days, the only reason i'd drink an ipa is to get hammered faster. oftentimes, i'd chug whilst holding my nose. never understood how anybody could drink that schitt and talk about the flavors and aroma and blech, no, stop. it tastes like how the trash bag that's been sitting in the sun for several hours smells.
there was an australian beer that the liquor shop up the street from me wold occasionally stock and it was excellent, esp on hot days. think it was coopers? was really expensive. preferred that or any dark beers. even the cheapest dark lager or whatever was usually pretty good to me. or, when it was on sale, hendrick's gin. but that was always rare; a treat when it did happen though, to be sure.
haven't had a drink in five years now? i can't remember. it's been that long.
