from the bloomberg article about the dumb bolton/kelly fight discussed above:

Trump has lately expressed fury about a large group of migrants who are traveling from Honduras toward the U.S. border. He vowed Thursday to deploy the military and shut down the Mexican border unless the migrants are turned back.

didn't realize he had "vowed" this. maybe he's hoping to manufacture a crisis just before the election? probably just blowing smoke

Karl Malone, Thursday, 18 October 2018 21:48 (five years ago) link

He should personally shut down the border. Just suit up and march back and forth, with a gun over his shoulder.

democrats should spend more energy reminding people that the trump organization (apparently) only turns a profit by defrauding investors. also, the tax story shouldn't be framed as being about how him inheriting that 400 million, because he didn't. he stole about half of it from the US government through tax fraud.

we are well past the point where any of this really matters

mookieproof, Friday, 19 October 2018 01:45 (five years ago) link

2020's comin up and the democrats shouldn't water it down. the takeaway from that times tax story wasn't that he inherited a bunch of money and thus was not "self-made." it's that he was a criminal from the start. and his entire business career was based on swindling people.

This is true, and who cares? The point isn't to convert Trump voters. They're ~30% of the electorate and will stay that way as long as there's a Trump (or a Steve King, probably, in 2024) to vote for. The point is to convince other people, who have not previously voted, to vote against Trump or against whatever Republican is running.

i didn't say that democrats should advertise that trump is literal criminal because it will make the scales fall from his most avid supporters' eyes. it could also inspire the apathetic, or the people who unthinkingly vote republican cuz their family does, and whatever

Trϵϵship, Friday, 19 October 2018 02:18 (five years ago) link

Or maybe just talk about literally anything else. I don't know what you could possibly say about Trump at this point to someone who isn't already convinced that he's among the worst humans currently living.

"actually guys, trump is not really a self-made man" is def the missing piece that will get people to the polls, because nobody knew that in 2016

I don't know what you could possibly say about Trump at this point to someone who isn't already convinced that he's among the worst humans currently living.

This misses the point that a very large portion of the US electorate pays only the tiniest fraction of their attention to politics. You have to pound them with the same information over and over for it to penetrate. That's what the Republican disinformation apparatus does - and after the 18th or 26th repetition, it becomes a fact, whether it is true or not.

A is for (Aimless), Friday, 19 October 2018 03:05 (five years ago) link

Congressional Dems don't have the antiestablishment bona fides to claim a moral high ground on corruption. They'll make the attack and Trump will give them a stupid nickname and makena false equivalency and say something freshly racist about Maxine Waters because he has a walnut brain and that narrative Gambit will land hollow

idk. if i was running in 2020, and i still might, i would try to link the trump organization with the word "fraud" in everyone's minds

Trϵϵship, Friday, 19 October 2018 03:09 (five years ago) link

I think movements ought to be doing that--I don't think the broad public trusts any given sitting Dem to have a clean nose, distrust being historically high.

Didn't work.

louise ck (milo z), Friday, 19 October 2018 04:45 (five years ago) link

painting trump as a "fraud" wouldn't work in that context because a lot of people would a) do the same b) respect someone else who successfully gamed the system. someone else said that, years ago, I forget where I read it. I agree with it, anyway it would be better to run on literally anything else like someone said upthread. the tax stuff is SO boring

The problem with trying to tell the truth about Trump is the existence of the concept of Fake News. So everything revealed can be ascribed to being part of that by a true believer.
So wonder what it takes to get the wool removed from their eyes. Are even eventual immediate physical consequences going to be enough or are they going to be put down to other reasons than what would hopefully be the recognisable cause.

Stevolende, Friday, 19 October 2018 06:18 (five years ago) link

The 'truth' about Trump is irrelevant. Making any campaign about Trump is a mistake. Give people something to vote FOR instead
