I just don't get people who spend years and years mad at what the US and the Saudis are doing, and then when other people get mad as well go 'fuck you, you're mad for the wrong reason!'. Ride the wave, push for sanctions. No kid in Yemen are going to complain that the war ended because of Khashoggi rather than because his own brother died.

I guess you didn't get it when Richard Pryor said in his white voice about drugs reaching the suburbs, "My God, it's an epidemic!"

This morning I appeared on @HillTVLive and the Republican pundit I was paired with touted the virtues of toxic masculinity, attacking @BetoORourke as a beta male. @KrystalBall and I called him out because silence in the face of such complete B.S. is not an option. #TXsen pic.twitter.com/ebemLX0fQR

Waiting impatiently for science to figure out a way to spontaneously render infertile every dude who refers to himself as an alpha male. Dream big, scientists, you can do this.

love dude trying to backpedal to calling Beto "millenial." Beto's 46, a whopping one year younger than Cruz.

Two situations. Richard Pryor being mad at white people for not caring about black people. And you being mad at everyone for not caring about Yemeni people. Do you see the difference?

this weird online taxonomy of "alpha" and "beta" might be some of the dumbest bullshit i've ever seen... that said, i gotta wonder if that little chimp in the clip above holds himself out as a reeeeal "apha" male, because bruh

I thought it had been widely exoposed taht teh guy who initially came up with Alpha/beta males spent a lot of his later career trying to kill the idea. Found something out about the wolves he'd observed being very closely related which had more to do with their behaviour than what he hypothesised.
I just know i have seen the theory behind it explored several times over the last year on various things and explained why it shouldn't be believed in.

But could see the people it most appealed to wanting to fall into line with it anyway.
Alpha male just means a-hole in plain terms ddoesn't it, though supposedly with charisma. & I tend to find those who are trying to live up to it don't strike me as the most charismatic anyway. Just leaves me wondering why people put up with it and don't find teh whole thing childish for the most part.

^^ my buddy definitely fits the alpha male profile, but he has lots of money - so people put up with it.

Ross, Wednesday, 17 October 2018 18:49 (five years ago) link

the worst aspect of the whole alpha/beta mindset is that it worships dominance and diminishes the role of kindness to invisibility, whereas in a correct scale of values these positions should be reversed.

A is for (Aimless), Wednesday, 17 October 2018 18:52 (five years ago) link

"NPC" maybe even more revealing than intended because it betrays the dehumanizing hierarchy that these assholes all really crave: some people have agency and are at the center of the bildungsroman or the hegelian world-historical narrative, some don't, and aren't. unsurprisingly this is also how white supremacy conceive of nonwhites and how patriarchy conceives of women.

a bunch of orcs to be killed and looted, basically

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Wednesday, 17 October 2018 19:14 (five years ago) link

Orcs are technically npc’s but more accurately just “enemies”. npc’s are more like the characters in town who say the same things over and over again because they’re not important enough for someone to write a dialogue tree.

I would modify this myself and say that the extent to which we allow this become an acceptable means of discourse is the extent to which we're totally fucked. Sociopathy was always a thing, the extent to which its expression was tolerated or validated maybe not so much.

i think the gleeful cruelty of current discourse is really something else on another level though, and the ease w/which you'll find people who will cheer on your cruelty.

omar little, Wednesday, 17 October 2018 21:50 (five years ago) link

otm, the cruelty is the point as per that Atlantic article

sleeve, Wednesday, 17 October 2018 21:53 (five years ago) link

fwiw, my point in bringing up hegel and making reference to patriarchy and racial supremacy theory was in part to suggest that there is nothing remotely new about people dehumanizing other people and refusing to imagine them as independent beings with agency over their own lives or politics. it was expressed, tolerated, and validated as essentially the baseline assumptions undergirding imperialism among many other forms of domination. this is important because it's not unrelated to the current moment: reactionary politics promises to turn back the clock to the "great" era when among other things it was not merely "tolerated or validated" but normative to approach the world this way.
