pod is today's "featured article" on wikipedia. which is nice

no (Left), Friday, 29 May 2020 13:14 (three years ago) link

songs are great but the albini aesthetic rarely does it for me, i'd have gone for last splash. but i'll take it

30 years old today!

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 29 May 2020 13:47 (three years ago) link

the thing about pod vs. last splash is that they're both perfect

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 29 May 2020 14:16 (three years ago) link

albini's method of recording very tight bands in a straight up way that emphasized dynamics which would somehow make them sound more mysterious and strange = still classic i think, despite the uneven mastering (or at least i think that must be why "happiness" is 30x louder than the rest of the record)

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 29 May 2020 14:25 (three years ago) link

yeah I think there is something a little off about the mastering of Pod, at least on the CD version, would be interesting to hear that album on vinyl and see if it's any different. I think the Albini recording works otherwise

just had a quick look on slsk and found some FLACs purporting to be ripped from the original LP so will see

Colonel Poo, Friday, 29 May 2020 14:37 (three years ago) link

I can listen to "Lime House" on repeat for an hour. Easily Deal's best song ever. POD is indeed a far better album than LAST SPLASH, and I love how she returned to Albini
after the bloat of Gil Norton

beamish13, Friday, 29 May 2020 18:21 (three years ago) link

Albini's Rid of Me (and some other) production being discussed on PJ Harveythread. Back then I listened to alt-rock on casettes, via whatever headphones, didn't worry about production.

I can listen to "Lime House" on repeat for an hour.

If I'm going to do this I'm going to listen to the demo version anyways thx for watching my TEDTalk

weekly shopper helper (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 29 May 2020 21:43 (three years ago) link

I listened to the vinyl rip of Pod earlier, Happiness Is A Warm Gun was still a little louder than the tracks around it but it sounded great although I don't think it was significantly different to the CD, not that I A/B'd it or anything. It did seem to be actually a vinyl rip, there were a couple of tiny pops during Metal Man which has a lot of quiet parts.

It is a great album and it took me back to my teens when I bought it and I could picture my bedroom at my mum's house

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 30 May 2020 00:09 (three years ago) link

Used to play my Pod tape in mom's minivan, hope she enjoyed it. The Breeders were so formative for me I didn't even know the (post-Beatlemania) Beatles yet.

geoffreyess, Saturday, 30 May 2020 03:48 (three years ago) link

Pod is so good. One of the top 10 albums of the 1990s.

tylerw, Saturday, 30 May 2020 03:55 (three years ago) link

Can’t recommend the Pod demos enough.

I don’t think Kim has done any interviews in 7+ years, no?

beamish13, Sunday, 15 January 2023 22:50 (one year ago) link

She did WTF with Marc Maron in 2017, and what I thought was quite a lot of press around All Nerve in 2018. Pretty quiet since then...

verhexen, Sunday, 15 January 2023 23:37 (one year ago) link

The full band did an NPR interview for All Nerve, but I can't remember which show it was for.

also in the US, currently, with Last Splash 30th anniversary headline dates in between. Belly opening for Breeders on some Californian and Washington dates.

vashti funyuns (sic), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 16:03 (seven months ago) link

Yep, we have tickets for one of those dates. Hard to believe it's been 10 years since we saw them on the last anniversary tour!

Clientless (Scooter's Version) (morrisp), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 16:08 (seven months ago) link

I'm going to see them in SF, albeit at a very different venue then their last time here (Rickshaw Stop & The Independent)

citation needed (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 16:25 (seven months ago) link

My favorite band. They played recently in Atlanta but it's just too far from Savannah (5 hours) and I saw the prior Last Splash reunion. I think we saw them on one of the last nights and they came back and played Pod in full as well, plus a couple of b-sides. It was terrific.

They are definitely a band that has gotten better live.

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Sunday, 10 September 2023 21:50 (seven months ago) link

Yes! They are much better now than they were in the 90s.

If you like the Breeders and Last Splash, do it!

Very good new piece in WaPo. Gift link, go nuts:

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 16 September 2023 14:45 (seven months ago) link

Thanks Ned. A couple paragraphs in, already an error:

Macpherson, who joined after 1990s “Pod,” pounded his Gretsch kit like an Ohio schoolboy raised on Rush.

Jim didn't join until 1993, he replaced Jim Mattock (of Spacemen 3 and Josephine's band Perfect Disaster) who drummed on the Safari EP.

citation needed (Steve Shasta), Saturday, 16 September 2023 14:53 (seven months ago) link

Well, strictly speaking the sentence is accurate! He joined after it, they just didn’t say when.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 16 September 2023 15:00 (seven months ago) link

TIL: "ROI" is no-wave and "No Aloha" is shoegaze... picking nits I know yayaya.

but I'm also trying to figure out what song Kim's chart is for...

citation needed (Steve Shasta), Saturday, 16 September 2023 15:07 (seven months ago) link

xp Yeah it’s a little clunky but the writer is describing their “third lineup” and prob didn’t want to get into the weeds of mentioning an EP.

my brain goes aahhhh (morrisp), Saturday, 16 September 2023 15:14 (seven months ago) link

POV I'm your editor:

Macpherson, who joined for 1994's “Last Splash,” pounded his Gretsch kit like an Ohio schoolboy raised on Rush.

citation needed (Steve Shasta), Saturday, 16 September 2023 15:18 (seven months ago) link

^Better for sure. Good article though!

my brain goes aahhhh (morrisp), Saturday, 16 September 2023 15:19 (seven months ago) link

Better but since it was 1993... *runs away*

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 16 September 2023 16:06 (seven months ago) link

If only there were some way of verifying facts.

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Saturday, 16 September 2023 19:03 (seven months ago) link

sorry, but this really is picking nits. the error in Steve Shasta's rewrite would be worse if published than the original sentence, which is not inaccurate and just fairly common shorthand when writing for a mass audience. (i agree, however, that Steve's rewrite is better w/o the year error.)

alpine static, Saturday, 16 September 2023 19:08 (seven months ago) link

Fwiw, I agree and didn’t realize the year was wrong in Steve’s edit (which I assume was a simple oversight!)

my brain goes aahhhh (morrisp), Saturday, 16 September 2023 19:12 (seven months ago) link

The thing which irks me is my favourite album Title TK (few would agree with me that it's their best) is half a footnote, as if the Lopez/Medelez incarnation of the band was somehow invalid despite putting out as many records as the Wiggs/Macpherson lineup.
(it's Jon Mattock btw)

assert (matttkkkk), Sunday, 17 September 2023 23:56 (seven months ago) link

argh I meant "Medeles"
