When I meet someone new, I try to look past what makes them a singular being and straight into their statistically, sociologically determined soul.

xps

I agree that what Warren did was dumb but I'm not gonna pretend anyone's gonna remember this in two weeks, much less 2020

frogbs, Tuesday, 16 October 2018 11:53 (five years ago) link

she's def running for president now. the video associated with this was so slick

Trϵϵship, Tuesday, 16 October 2018 11:54 (five years ago) link

my only concern is that if sanders also runs in the primary their supporters will cancel each other out and we'll get a centrist. i hope bernie doesn't run if warren is.

"another dumb old white dude"-- seriously? this is such a tired schtick.

lol no it really really isn’t

I know it's not the best thing for, like, a healthy democracy, but part of me can't help wishing we could just run our finest insult comic against Trump. I mean, he's already been roasted at least twice (on Comedy Central and the Correspondents' Dinner) and didn't appear to handle it well either time. What I'm saying is, Jeff Ross 2020. Or Lisa Lampanelli or Sarah Silverman or Anthony Jeselnik. I'm not picky.

evol j, Tuesday, 16 October 2018 13:25 (five years ago) link

hey dems, want to "triumph" in 2020? well have i got a candidate for you...

|Restore| |Restart| |Quit| (Doctor Casino), Tuesday, 16 October 2018 13:28 (five years ago) link

Yeah, one of the most frustrating aspects of combating Trump is that the one thing he absolutely cannot take, his one demonstrable Achilles heel, is the bullying he dishes out, but dishing it out basically turns you into him. Which is the last thing I'd ever wish on anyone.

"I agree that what Warren did was dumb but I'm not gonna pretend anyone's gonna remember this in two weeks, much less 2020"

then you must not follow or know any Native activists, who are going to keep grinding this into the ground, as they have even prior to this DNA thing. Now, maybe Native activists have no actual sway or pull on electoral politics; but it depresses me to think of two years of relentless anti-Warren stuff coming from the Native left.

akm, Tuesday, 16 October 2018 13:45 (five years ago) link

You think they’ll push this when she is running against a guy who has made racism central to his political identity?

Trϵϵship, Tuesday, 16 October 2018 13:47 (five years ago) link

maura otm. all those fucking dumb, old white guys.

Yerac, Tuesday, 16 October 2018 13:48 (five years ago) link

god, trump is one messy bitch.

Yerac, Tuesday, 16 October 2018 13:49 (five years ago) link

yea I don't know why Native activists would focus on a relatively small transgression by Warren instead of Trump doing Native American war cries at his rallies

frogbs, Tuesday, 16 October 2018 13:49 (five years ago) link

I wouldn't be surprised if Trump starts echoing the talking points of Native activists in lambasting Warren. Incoherent, you say? Inconsistent with his overt racism? An almost maddening demonstration of cognitive dissonance? Yeah. Exactly.

Extra Shprankles (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 16 October 2018 13:54 (five years ago) link

oh he already started in his tweets. thus him being a messy bitch.

Yerac, Tuesday, 16 October 2018 13:56 (five years ago) link

it really is maddening especially given the media's complicity in all this, it's just broadly accepted that Trump & the entire GOP are bigots and bullies who lie about literally everything but whenever Maxine Waters suggests that maybe Huckabee Sanders doesn't deserve to be able to eat in peace CNN spends an entire day clutching their pearls

frogbs, Tuesday, 16 October 2018 13:57 (five years ago) link

Pocahontas (the bad version), sometimes referred to as Elizabeth Warren, is getting slammed. She took a bogus DNA test and it showed that she may be 1/1024, far less than the average American. Now Cherokee Nation denies her, “DNA test is useless.” Even they don’t want her. Phony!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 16, 2018

lmao @ "The bad version"

frogbs, Tuesday, 16 October 2018 13:59 (five years ago) link

anyway, I firmly believe it doesn't really matter who the candidate is. You either support Trumpism or not. It's up to people to vote in overwhelming numbers blah blah and not have some shifty 3rd party trying to muck it up again.

Yerac, Tuesday, 16 October 2018 13:59 (five years ago) link

Also, the IRS needs to claw back all the money that the Trump family failed to pay in taxes over the years. this cannot be said enough.

Yerac, Tuesday, 16 October 2018 14:00 (five years ago) link

played right into those tiny hands, good job

it's almost like native activists expect or want better from the left or something

Cool point missing, bruh.

Extra Shprankles (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 16 October 2018 14:15 (five years ago) link

My recommendation to dem candidates going forward is, rather than respond or make any direct reference to Trump, to simply let the Toad pins on their lapels do the talking.

Native activists should hold the left up to a higher standard, but I just don't think akm is right when he writes it depresses me to think of two years of relentless anti-Warren stuff coming from the Native left.

it's quite possible, but don't give up yet

tell people what you're going to do for them instead of going with "Trump you're a con man" which everyone has made their mind up about already

the problem: in-arguing within the left is necessary and probably productive in the long run, but nihilistic GOP assholes (including the asshole-in-chief) can jump in and fan the flames.

thought this was interesting:

voter participation has surged as the partisan divide has grown sharper.

The electorate is not turned off by the chasm, and contestation, between the parties. On the contrary, Hetherington finds, the polarized political parties have animated voters of all stripes—liberals, conservatives, and moderates. Growing civic engagement and voter turnouts are hallmarks of a vibrant democracy, not of a “broken” one.

why don't you think akm is right? because you think we won't in fact see that level of anti-Warren stuff from the Native left?

soref, Tuesday, 16 October 2018 15:04 (five years ago) link

Work backwards from the assumption that Trump will win in 2020. What would you have done differently besides vote for the Dem, drive people to vote, hammer the message that 4 more years of Trump is completely unsustainable for the majority of americans and and everything that entails. I literally don't know how to get over peoples' obsession with abortion, though. I think it's really weird.

Yerac, Tuesday, 16 October 2018 15:04 (five years ago) link

It would make at least more sense to me if those same people seemed to give half a shit about the well-being of post-unborn children.

Might hope that accentuated polarisation might stop the idea that the parties were 2 sides of the same coin and get rid of apathy over voting. Though there are still bastions of MOR that are too acquiescent to the other side and hopefully might be got rid of eventually.
Or on the other hand bipartisan endeavours being more attractive might be more conducive too.
