My immediate family, mom, dad, two brothers, two sisters in laws I only speak to my mom for the last two years.

Basically because she is an immigrant, no education, military spouse so I give her leeway.

So maybe we need a democratic candidate that can traumatize trump voters. I still think the best way to do this is throw out a bunch of verbal punches and counterattacks so as to send Hero Trump into a pathetic, little man corner. We need a Democrat that comes off strong and confident. Plus constantly using Trump’s words and actions against him always makes for a good 1-2 punch.

He said captain, I said wot (FlopsyDuck), Tuesday, 16 October 2018 00:58 (five years ago) link

Can't disagree with that. I think Kamala Harris or Kirsten Gillibrand could fill that role and I would vote for either of them in a second

Is it too crazy to say that a pestilential male force is in control of this country right now?

I think we need to elect a woman president as soon as possible

Dan S, Tuesday, 16 October 2018 01:49 (five years ago) link

Dave Brat mentioned Nancy Pelosi 21 times during his debate tonight with his Democratic opponent Abigail Spanberger.

The audience was laughing and groaning it got so noticeable.

Here's what mentioning Nancy Pelosi 21 times looks like: https://t.co/UIElZNg7zh pic.twitter.com/9stq6Sg8dg

One somewhat overlooked item tonight: Donald Trump.

Abigail Spanberger didn't mention Trump once.

For a midterm election that most people consider a referendum on Trump, it's pretty interesting that Democrats never mention the guy!https://t.co/UIElZNg7zh

Interesting campaigning from both sides here

Warren said she had Native American ancestry and the racist president said I’ll donate to charity if you prove it with a DNA test which she then does and we equate that with “Dem does dumb shit”

yes, deciding to play trump's game & falling on her face spectacularly in the process is an own-goal, which is some dumb shit my man

I think the time is ripe for a dem prez candidate of Warren's seeming decency (and I would definitely vastly prefer a woman to another dumb old white dude) but the fact remains that there's going to be some weird jiu jitsu involved in taking on an incumbent Trump. Like it's uncharted territory in many ways and there may not be a clear way forward, but there are certainly musts to avoid based on several years of observation and today's hubbub doesn't give me a huge amount of confidence that Warren sufficiently recognizes those musts. I want her to recognize them, though! Honestly!

"another dumb old white dude"-- seriously? this is such a tired schtick. i'm pulling for warren and, all things being even, i would prefer a female candidate because that's a barrier that needs to be broken, but this disingenuous self-flagellating nonsense gets under my skin

You do realize you sound like a political consultant, and it's October 2018. Remember Hilary Clinton's 2015 book tour, touted as her Listening Tour? It sure came up often in October 2016!

alfred, people are talking strategy as a coping mechanism. they can't do anything but dream of the day when trump is vanquished from their nightmares.

congrats on y'all turning into Chuck Todds without the family home in Kendall. I guess today's theme was more interesting than worrying about whether Trump has dishonored the great principle of American foreign policy post-WWII whereby we went to bed with dictators in exchange for anti-Communist support while they executed thousands of native Khashoggis.

I’m informed by my embarrassed millennial daughter @MeredithFineman that @garbage was very big in the 90s and that she played them loud in her room as a kid. Ok, but I am a guy who is culturally oblivious to ENTIRE DECADES and totally missed the pop music scene of the 90s.

Maybe I’m a complete fuckin’ idiot (“MAYBE?”, ILX screams as one), but I’m genuinely not seeing the face-plant/own-goal here. Explain it to me like it’s not obvious, cause to me it’s not, like, at all.

My posts in these threads are just coping mechanisms of varying efficacy (eg a CNN talking head LARP sesh in lieu of undying screams), the momentary pretense of control to offset a terrifying general lack thereof. Usually, anyway. Pretty sure Elizabeth Warren is taking copious notes rn.

xps to caek i had to dig into the table to parse what he meant there. its not that WW with no college are trending that much further to trump, although they did move moreso in that direction. the widening of that gap mostly comes from a dramatic shift of college educated WW to the democrats, a demographic that routinely voted for REPS save the two DEM wave midterms of 82 and 06.

f. hazel did a good job of this upthread:

Warren was being cute with the ambiguity of "Native American ancestry" in order to zing Trump, and naturally it's going to result in an eye-rolling press release from Kim TallBear, who is native herself and whose main research focus is race and science. Tribal membership, as a matter of self-determination, should be left up to them to define for themselves. And Warren should know better than to fuck around with public assertions about her blood quantum when the criteria for membership in the Cherokee Nation are readily available from the Cherokee Nation and do not include "the presence of genetic markers". Pleading ignorance about issues of DNA testing with respect to tribal membership is worse, because it just proves to Native Americans that once again you do not give a shit about them, it's all about white people fighting with each other. All Warren had to do was ask someone like Kim TallBear, who is easily reachable on Twitter, if this was a wise idea before going ahead with this obnoxious publicity stunt.

I'm on the fence about Warren running or for that matter why she'd even do this right now but regardless I believe this will have absolutely no bearing on any potential candidacy.

Dan S, Tuesday, 16 October 2018 03:42 (five years ago) link

In the long term, this DNA kerfuffle won't make any difference to a potential Warren presidential campaign. It won't help her in the primaries and if she were to be nominated, it would be reduced to insignificance by November 2020. The most this could do for or against her would be to persuade some big donors or some party activists that she's either a stronger or weaker candidate than they thought she was. The public won't be swayed by this.

M bison yeah I think based on that data alone that could be good news or bad news for either side (it’s probably bad news for the gop because it’s them losing a growing constituency). But the main thing for me is the cliff edge 25ish pt change is very unusual.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Tuesday, 16 October 2018 03:54 (five years ago) link

There’s many reasons why the Warren thing is dumb, but correct me if I’m wrong, Warren was calling out Trump and not trying to join a Tribe.

He said captain, I said wot (FlopsyDuck), Tuesday, 16 October 2018 03:59 (five years ago) link

The point being made is that identifying as Native American is done within the context of the principles and guidance of the Tribes' consensus, and not by counting DNA nucleotides; implying that the DNA test proves her Native identity seeks to bypass the preferences of the Native Americans who've made their criteria clear.

sorry for getting upset, just don't see Palin and Thatcher as representative of women in politics in 2018, and do think that women politicians in the US on the whole are less likely to be racists, bigots and warmongers (there are exceptions obviously)

Was Warren's Pocahontas appellation purely from Trump or did he pick that up from somewhere. Seems like a particularly dumb transposition but then again I can't think of what other iconic fictional Native American names could have been substituted. I guess at least it wasn't Minne-ha-ha.

Some right-wing blog asshole called her "Fauxcahontas" when the whole thing first emerged, and Trump - being way too stupid to understand that - called her "Pocahontas" and his knuckle-walking death cult hooted joyfully when he did it, so he's kept pressing his personal pleasure-button ever since.
