US Politics, October 2018: next week will be even longer

My immediate family, mom, dad, two brothers, two sisters in laws I only speak to my mom for the last two years.

Basically because she is an immigrant, no education, military spouse so I give her leeway.

So maybe we need a democratic candidate that can traumatize trump voters. I still think the best way to do this is throw out a bunch of verbal punches and counterattacks so as to send Hero Trump into a pathetic, little man corner. We need a Democrat that comes off strong and confident. Plus constantly using Trump’s words and actions against him always makes for a good 1-2 punch.

Can't disagree with that. I think Kamala Harris or Kirsten Gillibrand could fill that role and I would vote for either of them in a second

I think the time is ripe for a dem prez candidate of Warren's seeming decency (and I would definitely vastly prefer a woman to another dumb old white dude) but the fact remains that there's going to be some weird jiu jitsu involved in taking on an incumbent Trump. Like it's uncharted territory in many ways and there may not be a clear way forward, but there are certainly musts to avoid based on several years of observation and today's hubbub doesn't give me a huge amount of confidence that Warren sufficiently recognizes those musts. I want her to recognize them, though! Honestly!

xps to caek i had to dig into the table to parse what he meant there. its not that WW with no college are trending that much further to trump, although they did move moreso in that direction. the widening of that gap mostly comes from a dramatic shift of college educated WW to the democrats, a demographic that routinely voted for REPS save the two DEM wave midterms of 82 and 06.

also, 2018 is the first time this poll has a dem advantage with WM with college. huh.

Warren was being cute with the ambiguity of "Native American ancestry" in order to zing Trump, and naturally it's going to result in an eye-rolling press release from Kim TallBear, who is native herself and whose main research focus is race and science. Tribal membership, as a matter of self-determination, should be left up to them to define for themselves. And Warren should know better than to fuck around with public assertions about her blood quantum when the criteria for membership in the Cherokee Nation are readily available from the Cherokee Nation and do not include "the presence of genetic markers". Pleading ignorance about issues of DNA testing with respect to tribal membership is worse, because it just proves to Native Americans that once again you do not give a shit about them, it's all about white people fighting with each other. All Warren had to do was ask someone like Kim TallBear, who is easily reachable on Twitter, if this was a wise idea before going ahead with this obnoxious publicity stunt.

I'm on the fence about Warren running or for that matter why she'd even do this right now but regardless I believe this will have absolutely no bearing on any potential candidacy.

In the long term, this DNA kerfuffle won't make any difference to a potential Warren presidential campaign. It won't help her in the primaries and if she were to be nominated, it would be reduced to insignificance by November 2020. The most this could do for or against her would be to persuade some big donors or some party activists that she's either a stronger or weaker candidate than they thought she was. The public won't be swayed by this.

M bison yeah I think based on that data alone that could be good news or bad news for either side (it’s probably bad news for the gop because it’s them losing a growing constituency). But the main thing for me is the cliff edge 25ish pt change is very unusual.

There’s many reasons why the Warren thing is dumb, but correct me if I’m wrong, Warren was calling out Trump and not trying to join a Tribe.

The point being made is that identifying as Native American is done within the context of the principles and guidance of the Tribes' consensus, and not by counting DNA nucleotides; implying that the DNA test proves her Native identity seeks to bypass the preferences of the Native Americans who've made their criteria clear.
