Well....she went out of her way to say that she wasn’t claiming tribal membership in the video and ignoring she said and attacking her instead of the fascist president who calls her Pocahontas to laughing crowds of racists is making a curious decision.

It’s been funny to see the people who defended Salazar beyond reason get weirdly mad at Warren over this with the position that DNA tests themselves are racist.

I'm native and a registered tribal member. I know lots of native activists are up in arms on this but I really think they're missing the point on this very specific reveal today.

sovereignity is a huge issue with activists right now and it's an important issue. Warren isn't discussing this and their harping on her about it is like someone complaining the plot of a book wasn't about what they wanted it to be. She's simply showing a source for the family stories that she had been told. Do I think this makes her 'native'? No. She has some native blood. I don't believe she has ever claimed anything otherwise. I know someone who is attacking her on this because this is missing the point that Native identity isn't about 'race' it's about 'being citizens of nations.' The point behind this argument is that tribes and activists are concerned that there is a concerted effort to declare tribes invalid because they are 'race based'.

These are valid points and ones I'm not sure that Warren is well versed in. I know activists have tried to reach her about it. It suppose it would be good for her to listen to them regardless because otherwise she's going to have this shit hanging on her from both the right and the native left.

all that said: I like Warren's politics but her voice annoys the fuck out of me and she sounds like an old white lady. ha.

Come primaries if she is running, I am glad I won't have to hear people, primarily men, talk about how they can't possibly vote for Warren because they can't trust that she didn't lie about her heritage. Warren was being cute with the ambiguity of "Native American ancestry" in order to zing Trump, and naturally it's going to result in an eye-rolling press release from Kim TallBear, who is native herself and whose main research focus is race and science. Tribal membership, as a matter of self-determination, should be left up to them to define for themselves. And Warren should know better than to fuck around with public assertions about her blood quantum when the criteria for membership in the Cherokee Nation are readily available from the Cherokee Nation and do not include "the presence of genetic markers". Pleading ignorance about issues of DNA testing with respect to tribal membership is worse, because it just proves to Native Americans that once again you do not give a shit about them, it's all about white people fighting with each other. All Warren had to do was ask someone like Kim TallBear, who is easily reachable on Twitter, if this was a wise idea before going ahead with this obnoxious publicity stunt.
