his specific complaint about her was that she had shiny object syndrome where she would divert attention to other high profile things and not follow up on the day to day.

wow a boss that didn’t focus on the day to day

executive skills would be picking the right people for the positions who report to you, then managing your communication with them so you understand what is happening in their area, what their deliverables are and what problems they are having in delivering them, including a way to find out what problems they are not reporting to you. If you can't do those things well, you lack executive skills

Um okay but. Aren't we speaking, at this time, about choosing an opponent for one Donald J. Trump, late of the state of New York?

Like, that list doesn't apply to Jim in the slightest so I don't know why we would apply it to his putative successor.

Donald Trump would never be able to get his project management certification.

Yerac, Sunday, 14 October 2018 19:59 (five years ago) link

Aren't we speaking, at this time, about choosing an opponent for one Donald J. Trump

To the best of my knowledge, every other person in the world would fully qualify as not being Donald J. Trump, so we may feel free to narrow that broad field according to whatever principles we wish to apply.

i think once people see Donald Trump is unqualified they'll never vote for him

omar little, Sunday, 14 October 2018 20:32 (five years ago) link

If the main qualifications are cutting taxes and inspiring lib tears, he's qualified.

I got this report thrown at me by Google...

https://www.dallasnews.com/news/2018-elections/2018/10/14/defiant-ted-cruz-beto-orourkes-hometown-elpaso-tells-democrats-come-take

...and it kind of illustrates my issues with Beto's campaign. Cruz is parroting all these Trump talking points (tax cuts, skyrocketing employment etc.) that can easily be knocked down, holes punched into, set on fire...and O'Rourke isn't doing that. A high road is fine, but it needs to be said--early and often--That Cruz is a fraud and doesn't have the state's best interests at heart. I know a handful of Republicans who've flipped after discovering for themselves the same about Trump, and the road to victory is only possible by changing the discussion to that instead of the shit Cruz and his PACs are dictating.

Ubering With The King (C. Grisso/McCain), Sunday, 14 October 2018 22:52 (five years ago) link

beto's lack of counterpunch is why he will lose this race. that and a massive preexisting partisan deficit in texas. but he did a great job of selling himself.

21st savagery fox (m bison), Sunday, 14 October 2018 23:45 (five years ago) link

let's save the postmortems for after the vote, for fuck's sake

yes I still want hope

I thought O'Rourke was great in the debate

Dan S, Sunday, 14 October 2018 23:53 (five years ago) link

fucking dumbass tea-leaf-reading of broken polling models with obsolete narratives driven by the mindsets of journalists who've never met a Democrat they couldn't paint as a lost cause in the great self-punching Sisyphean struggle that is caring about anything that matters

El Tomboto, Sunday, 14 October 2018 23:53 (five years ago) link

lol

Dan S, Sunday, 14 October 2018 23:55 (five years ago) link

I mean yes, absolutely, Texas doesn't really deserve anything better than Ted Cruz, but also no, Texas is chock full of people who are capable of much, much better than re-electing Ted Cruz, and lastly, clearly based on this sentence, I should be paid handsomely to write for a national news organization about how the races are shaping up all over the country. It could go one way - or the other way!!!

El Tomboto, Sunday, 14 October 2018 23:56 (five years ago) link

i live in texas my guyyyyyy

21st savagery fox (m bison), Monday, 15 October 2018 00:10 (five years ago) link

i mean ive been wrong about shit in dramatic fashion, mostly in the calendar year of 2016 (presidential election, world series, nba finals) but beto is relying on historic voter turnout from groups that usually dont show up (new voter registration numbers dont look great) as well as closing the gap in the suburbs (anecdotally, he's doing p good on this). at the very least, beto is showing that texas can be competitive and in the near future a statewide upset could happen within the next 5-10 years. and its obv not OVER, but the lack of a strong counterattack on cruz is a problem!

21st savagery fox (m bison), Monday, 15 October 2018 00:17 (five years ago) link

Yeah, let's please stop shitting on Texas. We are seeing real demographic and political shifts here. Beto may win or lose, but we are not going to be a Republican stronghold forever. I'm hoping that the enthusiasm he's generating at least swings some of the close house races towards blue.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Monday, 15 October 2018 00:51 (five years ago) link

Yeah, let's please stop shitting on Texas.

you first, texas.

Hunt3r, Monday, 15 October 2018 01:12 (five years ago) link

no shit, i'd love to take that back moodles. i feel that way about most groups, localities, states, and the federal systems. with some hope, i don't disagree with your 2nd, 3rd, and 4th sentences. we all have a lot of utter crap and worse to wash off.

Hunt3r, Monday, 15 October 2018 01:19 (five years ago) link

Most of us don’t have to wash off electing Ted Cruz

El Tomboto, Monday, 15 October 2018 01:29 (five years ago) link

Just got back from a few days in San Antonio. Beto signs everywhere, got multiple compliments on my Beto shirt. Saw only two Cruz signs, total, and they were out closer to Fredericksburg, in Hill Country, and there were still more Beto signs out there. Iirc the preponderance of Trump signs in some key places tipped off his win. Maybe Beto will luck out? As one person told me, he's seen so much stuff happen that he thought would never happen, he's got no clue who has or does not have a real shot.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 15 October 2018 01:37 (five years ago) link

Fuck off, I didn't elect Ted Cruz.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Monday, 15 October 2018 01:39 (five years ago) link

This is a huge diverse state, and there are millions of people here who are not happy with 5he current state of affairs. We're not a massive Ted Cruz fan club.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Monday, 15 October 2018 01:45 (five years ago) link

Congratulations. My next job is firing Donald Trump. Your next job is firing Ted Cruz.

El Tomboto, Monday, 15 October 2018 01:52 (five years ago) link

If there's some kind of giant blue wave the polls aren't picking up, Beto could win, but the last three Senate elections in Texas went 54-42, 56-40 and 61-34 for Republicans. If Beto comes within 10% of Cruz it's be an impressive result for a Democrat here. I think he will, but it'll end up being something like 54-46 with Cruz winning.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Monday, 15 October 2018 01:58 (five years ago) link

Beto needs to funnel all his cash toward getting people to the polls.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Monday, 15 October 2018 01:59 (five years ago) link

Can you do that? Provide transport to ensure people get to vote if you are a candidate? Or dod you have to keep the appearance at least of being an independent body to transport voters, cos I would think actually making sure that people could get to where they needed to participate during an election would be beneficial.

also
Forgot to say yesterday when talking about Kemp running in Georgia that he was currently Secretary of State meant that he was organising the election while being one of the 2 main candidates. Which to most people would at least suggest a conflict of interests.

Stevolende, Monday, 15 October 2018 05:13 (five years ago) link

good news he says he didn't do it

Just spoke to the King of Saudi Arabia who denies any knowledge of whatever may have happened “to our Saudi Arabian citizen.” He said that they are working closely with Turkey to find answer. I am immediately sending our Secretary of State to meet with King!

I'm not sure about the exact mechanisms by which a Dem-controlled House would be able to force Trump's tax returns into public view, just that everything I read makes it seem like that would be a done deal if they win the majority. I just shudder to think of the lengths to which Trump would be willing to go to prevent that from actually happening.

evol j, Monday, 15 October 2018 14:12 (five years ago) link

By the time the tax returns and any incriminating videos come to light, we'll be so used to daily trolling and gaslighting that I don't imagine them making much of a difference.

we just had a massive drop of info about trump's business dealings from the nyt which had literally no impact at all so i'm nt holding my breath one way or another

himalayan mountain hole (bizarro gazzara), Monday, 15 October 2018 14:22 (five years ago) link

it's hard to say what kind of impact it will have--i mean, if the intended impact was the GOP congress investigating Trump's business dealings, then obviously it would fail on that account, but it doesn't mean that the revelations in that NYT article will wind up meaningless in the long run

I don't know if relitigating birtherism and taking racial purity tests to appease the right is necessarily the best Dem strategy but it's a hell of a lot better than Hillary talking about Monica Lewinsky again
