couscous must be the simplest thing in the world to cook, which is nice

for i, sock in enumerate (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 12 October 2018 17:41 (five years ago) link

yeah i like it

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 12 October 2018 17:54 (five years ago) link

my controversial opinion is that icecream & cake is only acceltable if the cake is warm/hot

if it’s just like, room temperature or cold birthday cake or whatever then NO ICECREAM

yes i am sally from when harry met sally

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 12 October 2018 17:56 (five years ago) link

*acceptable

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 12 October 2018 17:56 (five years ago) link

I think my preference here depends on the type and flavor of cake

for i, sock in enumerate (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 12 October 2018 18:11 (five years ago) link

for example, warm coconut cake sounds undesirable somehow

for i, sock in enumerate (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 12 October 2018 18:13 (five years ago) link

are we talking freshly baked warm cake or microwaved cake?

for i, sock in enumerate (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 12 October 2018 18:14 (five years ago) link

heat sources are irrelevant

cake that you like, whatever flavor, is only good with icecream if the cake is warm

if the cake is cold, throw that scoop of icecream in the trash

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 12 October 2018 18:21 (five years ago) link

that is my stance

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 12 October 2018 18:21 (five years ago) link

throw that scoop of icecream in the trash

rude

A is for (Aimless), Friday, 12 October 2018 18:22 (five years ago) link

does the rule apply to pie?

for i, sock in enumerate (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 12 October 2018 18:26 (five years ago) link

Pie is far superior to cake.

Yerac, Friday, 12 October 2018 18:35 (five years ago) link

Can i throw it in my mouth then eat the warm pie

F# A# (∞), Friday, 12 October 2018 18:35 (five years ago) link

i feel the same way about pie

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 12 October 2018 18:55 (five years ago) link

but cold cake & icecream is specifically a nonstarter for me

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 12 October 2018 18:56 (five years ago) link

if you’ve got a belly for cake AND ice cream then your slice of cake is too small

droit au butt (Euler), Friday, 12 October 2018 19:17 (five years ago) link

I have never been served cold cake with ice cream, but that sounds sort of wrong. I guess you don't like ice cream with jelly.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 12 October 2018 19:35 (five years ago) link

not really unless i can mix them together & make icecream & jelly mush

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 12 October 2018 19:38 (five years ago) link

…ice cream with jelly?

I have measured out my life in coffee shop loyalty cards (silby), Friday, 12 October 2018 19:39 (five years ago) link

OMG I love cake sooo much, I could literally eat all the cake in the world. I'm basically the cake monster. get in my belly!

imago, Friday, 12 October 2018 19:46 (five years ago) link

Jelly as in jello. Kids party favourite in the UK, no adult would be seen eating it

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 12 October 2018 19:48 (five years ago) link

…ice cream with jell-o?

I have measured out my life in coffee shop loyalty cards (silby), Friday, 12 October 2018 19:49 (five years ago) link

I had no idea that was even a thing!

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Friday, 12 October 2018 19:52 (five years ago) link

I mean, it's basically a kids version of a trifle I guess. But trifle is the worst pudding anyway, so it has no sympathy from me.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 12 October 2018 19:53 (five years ago) link

Who the fuck puts jello in a cake

F# A# (∞), Friday, 12 October 2018 20:13 (five years ago) link

Nobody as far as I'm aware

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 12 October 2018 20:15 (five years ago) link

I really love trifle, but maybe because I am not british.

Yerac, Friday, 12 October 2018 20:16 (five years ago) link

Looks too fancy for me

I’m a pie guy

Simple

F# A# (∞), Friday, 12 October 2018 20:20 (five years ago) link

There is nothing fancy about a trifle. Just horrible wrong nasty ladyfinger biscuits soaked in sherry, instant custard, tinned peaches and spray cream with sprinkles.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 12 October 2018 20:24 (five years ago) link

i want piiiiiiie

imago, Friday, 12 October 2018 20:24 (five years ago) link

Oh and jelly(o) of course

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 12 October 2018 20:25 (five years ago) link

xpost, ok maybe I have only had bourgie trifle because what you describe is not what I have had.

Yerac, Friday, 12 October 2018 20:28 (five years ago) link

ew ew ewwww

*so* gross! OMG

get in the sea, pie-bap

imago, Friday, 12 October 2018 20:29 (five years ago) link

Can we ban imago again already

F# A# (∞), Friday, 12 October 2018 20:44 (five years ago) link

I am heading to The English Seaside in a couple of weeks and look forward to puddings and pies of all sorts

droit au butt (Euler), Friday, 12 October 2018 20:45 (five years ago) link

So much to catch up on.

On Ramen, dipping is definitely the way to go so tsukumen for me. Although faced with the choice between ramen and good soba, then soba every time. Good soba has to be high buckwheat content or what’s the point.

I don’t really eat rice at hope due to low carb dieting but, in China or Japan I eat much more and love it. On my most recent trip I ate more brown rice and rice and beans than I have before. Japanese rice and beans or the Taiwanese/Japanese rice with beans and grains like sorghum is wonderful. Ochazuke and bubazuke ftw, btw.

I will defend trifle to the death but it has to be well made, lots of booze, fruit and ridiculously rich custard. If you are going to chill custard then it needs to be slightly over sweet when warm. Jam in the trifle sponges. Jelly does not belong in Trifle, why would you spoil something so wonderful with flavourless plastic.

On the cake question - of course no ice cream with cake or cream for that matter, cake ought to stand up on its own. Custard, ice cream and cream belong with pies and tarts.

Jello is bone and animal hide gelatin foolio

F# A# (∞), Friday, 12 October 2018 20:56 (five years ago) link

OMG f# you are such a negative ninny! i ain't goin' nowhere, darlin' *snaps fingers*

imago, Friday, 12 October 2018 21:15 (five years ago) link

Yeah, the trifle I have had has been magnificent.

i've been snacking on some amazing sassafras-flavored gelatin gummies this week but i think in the future we're going to try and move to the vegan/kosher/halal gelatin for making such things

dub pilates (rushomancy), Friday, 12 October 2018 23:51 (five years ago) link

I feel like the should start offering pot gummies on flights.

I got a bento box yesterday for lunch. I ate half of the rice. I was very proud.

Yerac, Thursday, 18 October 2018 14:40 (five years ago) link

is it a controversial opinion that prime rib is terrible? it's my opinion.

droit au butt (Euler), Thursday, 18 October 2018 14:41 (five years ago) link

I kind of think 80% of what people think is well cooked meat is terrible.

Yerac, Thursday, 18 October 2018 14:43 (five years ago) link

yeah I think I've had really good steak like one time ever, and it's not for lack of trying (or spending). & it was at a professor's house, not even at a resto! ok maybe once at a resto in Marseille.

I like meat "in" things but not really as a main dish.

droit au butt (Euler), Thursday, 18 October 2018 14:51 (five years ago) link

I enjoy prime rib on rare occassions but it's too expensive

the dutiful and the banned (rip van wanko), Thursday, 18 October 2018 14:54 (five years ago) link

Overcooked meat is as bad as past al dente pasta for me. I think I like most of my food on the way undercooked to raw side.

Yerac, Thursday, 18 October 2018 14:56 (five years ago) link

Or unless it's brisket or something like that that needs to be dripping off the bone. I need to go find some brisket now.
