Fleetwood Mac: Classic or Dud

Don’t think bands of this size and longevity really hang out between shows so not sure whether clashing personalities really matter at this point.

Give me a new Buckingham album over hearing Stevie Nicks sing live every day of the week.

stevie was good on American Horror Story this week.

There must have been more to the Buckingham rant than people are letting on, because being fired for "smirking" seems incredibly extreme.

If I were Christine or Nicks, enduring the smirk for forty years would trigger me too.

there can be an album made and released last year by a major record label (such as that designation means much) entirely comprised of songs written and performed by Lindsey and Christine, and the rhythm section on the whole thing is McVie/Fleetwood. But you can't say that project is made by Fleetwood Mac, evidently. Christine and Lindsey toured this record, without John or Mick, but this would suggest that the four can get along reasonably (did anybody here see any of these shows? Seems to me Stevie is the asshole here…abetted by noted asshole Irving Azoff.

someone in a comment above last year said w/r/t to Stevie's contention that you can't make a records for jillions of $$$ anymore because fewer consumers buys them, belies the fact that there is no ironclad rule that Fleetwood Mac simply must spend that kind of $$$ on a recording. zillionaire musicians can record because they want to and that is what they do, and thus adjust their methods for the present climnate. or they can not.

saw it in LA and it played out very much like a lindsey solo show with christine as a special guest. her stage presence was what you might describe as reluctant. his stage presence was very "hello LA! let me tell you a story!" my wish that 1 or 2 other LA residents might pop in for a song or two went unfulfilled.

Exactly! They have a broad fanbase that still loves spending money on them: they buy CDs, vinyl, merch, concert tickets etc.

It's hilarious that they make a big deal about recording costs when I am sure most of them have a studio in their house.

The issue is almost certainly that Stevie is so used to recording for a long time in expensive studios that she can only conceive of / for status’ sake tolerate working that way. (And plausibly doesn’t want to spend that much time talking to Buckingham.)

The other four are obviously able to get an album recorded somewhere, and Fleetwood has recorded two albumsworth of material in Neil Finn’s house in the last two years. (The house’s studio is a full-scale publicly hireable dealie, but still.)

The Buckingham/McVie album is a throwback to their imperial phase and Nicks must be mad not to be involved in that. Sure if it had been a full Fleetwood Mac album it would have done even better commercially.

Fuck Stevie! Bring back Bekka and Dave mason! there are exactly 3 weirdos on earth who have been pining for that lineup since 97!

the shitty thing is that not only Stevie thinks that its not Mac without her, but a constellation of biz people do too. Would somewhat clueless fans buy an album branded as Mac at Target, notice she wasn't on it and be pissed off?

there are nine good-to-classic albums pre-Lindsey and Stevie that i think a lot of fans barely know exist, unfortunately.

Gotta admit, I'm one of those. As I think I said on the classic albums thread, I'd call myself a fan now but I've never heard any pre-Buckingham Mac.

Then Play On is one of the great late 60s hard rock/blues records

Future Games and especially Bare Trees are wonderful albums from the Welch era.

Every Lindsey solo album is excellent FWIW. The three from the 00's might be his best solo work ever.

Ken's new book on Tusk has lots of interesting stuff on the making of the album, the internecine workings of the group, and a whole shitload of unwanted "I saw a sexy woman and slept with her" anecdotes.

Huh, didn't know it existed. Reviews on Amazon are pretty critical of it, both the writing and the stories.

I didn't know that existed! Will read. His book on Rumours had all of those characteristics. I remember very specifically that the woman from Record Plant who he was infatuated with was named Nina. "Nina!"

He describes a lot of shapely young female bodies in a way that will make you feel ill, and complicit in the leering. But the insights into the making of the album are good.

Like, the subtext, or maybe the text, of the book is basically "Ken Caillat is a producer who fucks".

Yeah I started this the other day and it's good when it talks about the band. I have a whole new appreciation for "Oh Daddy"

Agree. Great book (« Rumours »)when he gets into the details of the recording process. If you’ve ever been in a control room with different personalities all working for a common goal then you’ll recognize a lot of the stuff he writes about. The old goat shit is distracting but didn’t ruin the book for me.

Big fan of the Rumours > Tango run now. Took some years. Thanks, Covid. Always dug them but am now revelling in those harmonies, their smarts when it came to knowing what worked in their hits ( except maybe with the exception of the magnificent "Tusk" ) and their way with production gloss. Whatta band.
