also, sparkle motion, i'm sorry for your losses, and my post by no means assumed you didn't have hardship in your own life. i just was not a fan of the rhetoric.

>I agree this is shameful and terrible but they're not random unrelated words. This is patriarchy and misogyny in visible action--supporting Hillary made him feel like less of a man, and less able to participate in masculinity, whereas jumping on the Trump bandwagon strokes his sense that he's included in the benefits of (explicitly) maleness and (I think, implicitly) whiteness, which is not an uncomplicated statement but still...BOOM. There you have it, in simple terms.

Agree totally -- was more stunned by his baseline honesty than being sarcastic by saying he was spelling it out -- there's a through-line in his entire rant so consistent I almost feel like thanking him for putting it this simply; Hillary's fine, but dads need to start playing catch with their sons again

The Kanye thing is incredibly honest, and embarrassing and stupid. I wonder if any other presidents would have had Kanye into the Oval Office to talk about what cool Dads they seem. Bill Clinton?

My colleagues have to go to dinner with their new boss in like 3 Thursdays and were asking me for conversation topics. I told them to say "Hey!, if this were the 80s all of us would be rushing home to catch the Cosby Show tonight!" I wonder if Kanye watched a lot of Cosby show and is now acting out.

Yerac, Friday, 12 October 2018 01:30 (five years ago) link

god I hope I never "have to" go to dinner with my boss. any boss.

I am getting out of there next week so I get to miss the dinner and mandatory holiday parties. The last time I was working there two years ago I had to go to lunch with the boss and talked about how dogs can see ghosts. I nail these functions.

Yerac, Friday, 12 October 2018 01:45 (five years ago) link

dogs can definitely see ghosts though

Leonard Cohen apparently wrote a Kanye West poem back in 2015:

Co-opting the word 'alternative' is not the least of their crimes. Though I like to think that 'alt' is really just German for 'old', 'cause ultimately they're just a bunch of senile neo-nazis, regardless of age.

So, here's what we're up against.

Two AZ GOP staffers, under falsified names and a bogus "communist" organization, walked into #AZ01 Democrat @TomOHalleran's office to make a donation.

Tom's finance director smelled a rat.

The pair initially walked in to sign up to volunteer but had brought along a jar full of money that they wished to donate. After being directed to a finance staffer, they were told to fill out paperwork. In doing so, they identified themselves as members of the Northern Arizona University Communist party. They made clear they were not an official group but were holding meetings. But they also insisted upon a receipt.

When told they get only an emailed receipt, Rosales immediately scratched out one email and wrote another. The entire process raised eyebrows among O’Halleran’s staff.

Pretty sneaky. Clearly their commie disguises needed more work.

First, “inherently dislikable” is often a prerequisite for choosing politics as a career - no normal person ever gets accustomed to spending so much time trying to be liked, or becomes so inured to failing at it, and that’s a big part of the job.

Second, have you ever spent much time in Texas?
