the world is so fucking dumb I pray for death every single minute

I get you, but think of the inexhaustible smugness you can still derive from knowing you're not one of them. Helps you cope.

“If you’re building a floor — the Constitution is the base of our industry, of our country, of our company, right?” he said. “Would you build a trap door that if you mess up, and you accidentally — something happens, you fall and you end up next to the Unabomber? You gotta remove all that trap door out of the relationship. The four gentleman that wrote the 13th Amendment — and I think the way the universe works, it’s perfect! We don’t have 13 floors.”

i've always thought that trump was literally the worst person who could ever possibly be president. and by 'possibly' i mean that there's a chance that the people of the united states would actually vote for him, just because they've heard of him and he's on tv. but kanye might actually be worse, somehow

Kanye has no fucking idea what the fuck he is talking about at all. yet he gets this fucking stupid fuck platform to babble to other idiots that nod their heads in agreement . i hate this shit

(•̪●) (carne asada), Thursday, 11 October 2018 18:27 (five years ago) link

It's literally just an ego stroke for Trump. Someone is talking to him as if his opinion matters, as if he were a worthy vessel for such profound insights. Kanye could have been delivering little more than a stream of disconnected phonemes and Trump would've been honored to have been the recipient of those phonemes.

Extra Shprankles (Old Lunch), Thursday, 11 October 2018 18:33 (five years ago) link

I mean obviously it works both ways. Can't we just lock them both in a room and let them overinflate the other's ego until they cease to exist?

i've been reading through perlstein's latest, Invisible Bridge, which is about how the U.S. shifted from nixon to reagan during the 70s. like nixonland, it's full of all sorts of wonderful and disturbing anecdotes and long forgotten scandals of the day. while reading Nixonland, though, i often found myself thinking "well, at least things haven't gotten THAT bad today". part of that was because i was reading it before trump, and part of it was that the 60s were full of a lot of political violence that i have trouble imagining, even now. the experience of reading Invisible Bridge is different, though. feels like everything is much, much worse and much dumber than the 70s. that's my review of the trump era so far: less violent than the 60s, so much dumber than ever before

The relentlessness of this shit is just beating down my already compromised level-best attempt to find small joys in day-to-day life.

The undertow wins. It's not even about paying attention to the news anymore. Tune it out, don't tune it out, it's irrelevant to the extent that this pervasive sense of dread is moving like a contagion between any two people with a conscience.

also in the white house today, separately from the kanye event: kid rock, mike love + weirdos

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump welcomed musicians Kid Rock and country star John Rich to the White House on Thursday as he signed legislation overhauling the way music is licensed and songwriters compensated.

Trump signed the Orrin B. Hatch Music Modernization Act on Thursday. The bill won wide bipartisan support in the House and Senate and is backed by the music industry. It’s named after the retiring Utah senator, who is also a musician.

Also joining the president were Mike Love of the Beach Boys, singer Sam Moore and the Christian group MercyMe.

The legislation creates a new independent entity that will license songs to companies that play music online.

The nonprofit collective will then pay songwriters, including those who wrote pre-1970s classics before music copyrights protected their work.
