That dude just looks like a baby who happens to have a beard

That dude is Matt Christman. Maybe toddler bod for adults should be a thing too

tbf the infantilization of menswear started when wearing sneakers to work became acceptable. For women’s fashion it’s yoga pants & big boots and stuff I think

OTOH: When kid was 2ish I started noticing via playground anthropology that little boys just dressed like miniature dads, with slightly more superhero-themed graphic tees but overall the same types and colors of clothes. Little girls are in head-to-toe pink and purple and tulle skirts etc. which, somewhat sadly, is not how the moms roll.

"yoga pants & big boots"

isn't there a thread actually dedicated to this awful shit?

tight black leggings and big foofy boots

Those are not toddler clothes

I hadn't been in the US in a year and was taken aback by how many people dress like they are about to hit the gym or fix a vending machine at a moment's notice. I did't know you needed to wear head to toe under armour fitness apparel just to sit on an airplane.

Yerac, Thursday, 11 October 2018 16:04 (five years ago) link

Well it depends on how far away the vending machine repair gig is

Evan, Thursday, 11 October 2018 16:07 (five years ago) link

I am such a jerk. A couple of years ago this terrible guy in my group quit. On his last day of work at our very corporate office, when all you really have to do is show up, straighten stuff up and and leave after your exit interview, he shows up in baggy, dad jeans, t-shirt and a loud Giants jacket. I saw him in the pantry and asked if he was there to fix the vending machine. I was his manager so this probably makes sense why he quit.

Yerac, Thursday, 11 October 2018 16:15 (five years ago) link

i do appreciate the idgaf wardrobe choice of your coworker on his last day. Was it a plain t-shirt or did it have a spicy message?

sarahell, Thursday, 11 October 2018 16:26 (five years ago) link

Nah, he was a mid 40s year old white dude, so it was totally boring schlub wear. I think he thought the Giants jacket was edgy.

Yerac, Thursday, 11 October 2018 16:30 (five years ago) link

But hey, maybe more middle age white guys need to take a chance on shiny, shiny nylon jackets in primary colors.

Yerac, Thursday, 11 October 2018 16:36 (five years ago) link

if they really want to be "edgy" they would wear onesies in public

sarahell, Thursday, 11 October 2018 16:37 (five years ago) link

i have a friend who once dated a guy (in his 20s, but still) who had a GUNS N ROSES ONESIE

sarahell, Thursday, 11 October 2018 16:40 (five years ago) link

There wasa fashion from the mid 60s that people circulated photos of a few years ago. Seemed to be a top designer putting forth toddler clothing as youth wear. I can't find photos so far but do remember seeing them a while back, a bunch of young female models dressed as 4 year olds.
Trying to think of search terms.

Stevolende, Thursday, 11 October 2018 17:34 (five years ago) link

seems like a great way to end up on a watch list tbh

I was about to say who on earth wants to fuch someone dressed like a toddler, but then realized I am only speaking for women.

About 1/4 of that stuff is stuff you’d wear as an “adult,” another 1/4 is stuff you’d be unsurprised to see on a younger “adult,” and the rest is just fashion forward, albeit less meaningful when worn by a being who probably has no choice in their daily attire

El Tomboto, Friday, 12 October 2018 04:20 (five years ago) link

So basically I think the thread title’s implicit dichotomy is false and I’ve already told you how to prove me wrong and it’s not gonna be in the men’s section

are you like a fashion flat earther or something? you don't believe that clothing has cuts or bodies have proportions?

next you'll tell me the color wheel is a social construct

the late great, Friday, 12 October 2018 04:54 (five years ago) link

a red t shirt and shorts isn't really "toddler style"

six months pass...

Where do we stand on jumpsuits and rompers? They don't seem to be going away so have we embraced this? I bought a jumpsuit but haven't had the courage to wear it outside of the house yet! Rompers are still a firm no for me. They just seem too babyish.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Thursday, 2 May 2019 08:35 (four years ago) link

a red t shirt and shorts isn't really "toddler style"
but it is though, this is how you spot the American tourists, look for the middle aged people dressed like toddlers, everyone knows this surely?

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 2 May 2019 08:43 (four years ago) link

I’m too short for jumpsuits but I like the one piece ease of a romper. I think the name gives it a bad sheen but the garment itself is pleasing. I have a few that I wear regularly in the summer.

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Thursday, 2 May 2019 12:31 (four years ago) link

i have an aversion to them, not due to toddlerness, but because they're awkward when it comes to having to pee, and the waist/crotch placement always ends up fitting badly on me.

sarahell, Thursday, 2 May 2019 14:03 (four years ago) link

I kind of want that clear, murder onesie that Hannibal wears over his suit on the show.

Yerac, Thursday, 2 May 2019 14:22 (four years ago) link

the right romper on the right person can look rompingly good.

that said ppl in rompers often strike me as trying too hard to be cute / sexy.

the late great, Thursday, 2 May 2019 15:20 (four years ago) link

jumpsuits i haven’t really seen in the wild yet, though i know theyre a thing bcz both stussy and supreme have offered them multiple times in recent years

the late great, Thursday, 2 May 2019 15:23 (four years ago) link

If romper wearers are incidentally cute or sexy it’s not bc they’re trying too hard. They’re wearing a romper — they’re barely trying to wear clothes :)

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Thursday, 2 May 2019 16:34 (four years ago) link

yeah i think that's what i was trying to get at. it's like ... not enough clothing imo

the late great, Thursday, 2 May 2019 16:39 (four years ago) link

i just kinda don't understand them, rompers that is. I get the jumpsuit as a protective garment, e.g. coveralls, but that's about it.

sarahell, Thursday, 2 May 2019 18:20 (four years ago) link

Rompers are “don’t have to think about my clothes” clothes. Like a super short haircut but for clothes.

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Thursday, 2 May 2019 18:35 (four years ago) link

I've never seen one in the wild, but I follow a few Sixties/Seventies-inspired boutiques on Instagram and jumpsuits are definitely a thing there: https://shopmiracleeye.com/collections/overalls-jumpsuits

blatherskite, Thursday, 2 May 2019 20:32 (four years ago) link

Everyone who takes time to express themselves with an unconventional outfit looks good imo

Trϵϵship, Thursday, 2 May 2019 20:34 (four years ago) link

Good work rompers and jumpsuit people

Trϵϵship, Thursday, 2 May 2019 20:34 (four years ago) link

xxxp - only don't have to think about it if the super short haircut and/or romper is actually flattering and low-maintenance. in my case, neither are.

sarahell, Friday, 3 May 2019 03:07 (four years ago) link

Can’t be too flattering though or they’ll accuse you of “trying too hard to be cute”
Can’t win!! Might as well give up, wear a onesie and think about something else.

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Friday, 3 May 2019 13:16 (four years ago) link

I think rompers look fun.

idk regularly having to do wedgie removal is the opposite of the spirit of the romper as I understand it

sarahell, Friday, 3 May 2019 14:16 (four years ago) link

xxxp you can definitely win! you just have to not care what i think ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

the late great, Friday, 3 May 2019 16:46 (four years ago) link

most ppl are already there afaict

the late great, Friday, 3 May 2019 16:47 (four years ago) link

You can never be too cute

Trϵϵship, Friday, 3 May 2019 17:37 (four years ago) link

i know that is why i objected to that post! it's not the cute person's responsibility to be less cute so as not to burn out the eyes of those who gaze upon them. deal with it, gazers.

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Friday, 3 May 2019 17:39 (four years ago) link

I much prefer pinafores/jumpers over rompers. No bathroom shenanigans and I don't have to worry too much about ironing my shirt underneath if I am going to work.

Yerac, Friday, 3 May 2019 17:42 (four years ago) link

Oh ok—just read the thread and saw the full context.

Trϵϵship, Friday, 3 May 2019 17:43 (four years ago) link

but surely there are social conventions for what you wear and when? like would you wear a romper to a black tie event and be like "deal with it"? i mean, i suppose you could. i'm just saying i can't think of a lot of situations where a romper feels appropriate.

the late great, Friday, 3 May 2019 18:15 (four years ago) link

of course not, give me some credit
i am pretty good at dressing myself!

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Friday, 3 May 2019 18:16 (four years ago) link

and self aside, no one ever said "wear a romper to a job interview"

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Friday, 3 May 2019 18:17 (four years ago) link

what was the job
