I've been listening to Sárr's Ávitun a lot this week. A solo EP by Þórir from Nyss that came out in April.

I auditioned the last track and it had a really weird psychoacoustic effect on me, and wondering if anyone else had the same reaction to this (or any other particular) piece of music?

I have some tinnitus, not terrible, but basically I carry my own noise floor wherever I go. Playing the song was like having my noise floor raised significantly - like someone had identified key frequencies that ring in my ear, and boosted them (and only them) a lot. Really viscerally unpleasant.

I listen to TONS of extremely noisy shit and never had this experience before.

(Stephin Merritt has suggested strongly that the Magnetic Fields album "Distortion" was mixed to tigger his hyperacusis, but not sure that's the same)

Wow, that is weird. Do you have the same effect with the other two tracks? I don't hear a lot of difference in the way they're mixed.

Meant to post this earlier - but Satan were pretty damn good in Chicago this past week. Doomsday Clock/Twenty Twenty Five one-two punch was sweet. I took a buddy who had never heard 'em before, who's not much of a metalhead, but is a huge Iron Maiden fan, and he loved 'em and bought Cruel Magic at the merch table. Was happy to bring them a new fan. Brian Ross was good fun, and his banter was often hilarious!

New Terrorizer is interesting.

It's basically a Sandoval blastbeat showcase like World Downfall but the music isn't that style, it's grind but not the punky kind.

Not sure how I feel yet but the Monstrosity boys do a good job. It's not like the 2nd or 3rd Terrorizer albs either

fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Sunday, 14 October 2018 17:41 (five years ago) link

I liked those two Terrorizer albums that were basically Resistant Culture albums with Sandoval on drums. Checking out the new one now.

New Entropia album sneaked out at the end of September while I wasn't paying attention.

I absolutely loves their super-heavy psychedelic halucinations of what black metal could be on Ufonaut which came out in 2016 and am looking forward to exploring this one. First two songs do nothing to dissuade me from endorsing the new one!

I somehow missed that Moss Upon The Skull had signed to I, Voidhanger but they did and here's their album:

Slightly proggy, gallopy and riffy death metal. Found them through Bandcamp a year or two ago and love their stuff.

I remember Aborted being a pleasant but not memorable band but their last few have been fun horror-death metal releases with mega-intensity.

Stumbled across this video of Gojira performing "Global Warming" (a song they never play live) in the studio; it's pretty great, and reminds me I haven't listened to them in a while.

Not sure if Akitsa is liked around here but the new one is great! Pure Filosefem in sound and attitude. Less punky, more metal than in the past.

Yelploaf, Saturday, 27 October 2018 16:45 (five years ago) link

A couple of listens in, the Kriegsmaschine record is awesome again - more or less the same as Enemy Of Man. They might as well have called it a Maciej Kowalski solo album because this thing is drums first everything else second. It recalls Death's Individual Thought Patterns, in that it's all led by these big mid-paced technical drum grooves and the guitars weave in and out around it all.

Also, this Akitsa is indeed great! I had no idea they were still going.

Siegbran, Monday, 29 October 2018 11:13 (five years ago) link

I'll have to check both of them out.

Incidentally, no love for Burial Invocation's debut ITT?

fans of Hate Eternal won't be disappointed by the new one, but there are a lot of tasty, melodic and dual harmonic moments that elevate this one a wee bit.

it's fuckin pummeling.

decided to go see the first show on the HE/CC tour

Brutal Death Metal album art is like an A E S T H E T I C now

Me, I'm listening to the most recent Arizmenda album and it's pretty good but lacks some of the outre imagination of his tapes or track on the Desert Dances and Serpent Sermons comp.

Triptykon will be performing the complete work 'Requiem' (Celtic Frost's 'Rex Irae' was the first movement of three) at Roadburn 2019, with an orchestra. I gotta say, Tom G. Warrior describing a collaborator with the words "whose patience with me appears to be limitless" has given me my biggest laugh of the day, if not the week.

grawlix (unperson), Thursday, 1 November 2018 18:19 (five years ago) link

Listening to the "Work In Progress Rough Mix" disc of the ...And Justice For All box. It's not that interesting - what it mostly proves to me is that the argument that these songs needed more bass has always been bullshit. There's bass on these tracks, and it adds nothing. It's just a dense rumble in the background, with zero additional melodic or harmonic content. It sounds like distortion, frankly.

The most interesting thing about these tracks is that the guitar solos (and in some cases, like "The Shortest Straw," the backing vocals) hadn't been laid down yet, so there's long sections of James and Kirk hammering down the riffs and you just have to imagine the solo that should be there.

grawlix (unperson), Thursday, 1 November 2018 19:07 (five years ago) link

I was listening to Cowboys From Hell the other day and was struck how much the production sounded like AJFA - if you play a few songs back to back you can hear the similarities quite clearly, but also how Pantera (despite being a vastly inferior band) totally nailed this super overdubbed dry thrash metal sound only a year later, while with Metallica it just sounds much weaker, there’s something missing, maybe it’s bass, maybe it’s the drum sound but I can’t quite put my finger on it.

Siegbran, Thursday, 1 November 2018 19:45 (five years ago) link

aaaah holy shit

From TGW himself on the Tryptikon board:

The second part of Celtic Frost's Requiem was not "lost". It had never been written, which is something very different.

I began writing the Requiem in 1986, and I finished the first section for inclusion on the Into the Pandemonium album in 1987. I had always intended to eventually write a section two and three, but there was no urgency attached. We had also planned to eventually release an EP with the finished Requiem and, perhaps, perform it live at a special event.

These plans were utterly derailed, however, when I pathetically lost my sanity and credibility and recorded an abomination instead of a Celtic Frost album in 1988.

Upon reforming the group in 2001, Martin and I soon mused about finally finishing another section of the Reqiuem. The result was Winter, released on the Monotheist album, which was the third, and final part. The second part remained to be written (the sequence was of no importance to me as long as the entire piece wasn't finished). I thought that I would include it on a future Celtic Frost album.

Once again, Celtic Frost disintegrated before this could be accomplished, but ever since the formation of Triptykon, I have talked with the members of the band about one day finishing the missing second part of the Requiem and perhaps then recording and/or performing the entire three-part piece.

Due to the initiative of a friend of Triptykon late last year, we have now begun the process of writing this second part. The intention is, if all goes well, to perform the entire Requiem onstage in 2019. This will likely also be filmed.
