I don't think they took things very seriously till the 70 though.

60s issues of NME are remarkably dire

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 9 October 2018 20:25 (five years ago) link

Faith No More would definitely be a better choice than RATM.

Siegbran, Tuesday, 9 October 2018 20:39 (five years ago) link

Faith No More is never a better choice than anything. Faith No More are a garbage band for pseuds.

A CLAIM THAT REMAINS
INTACT

brush ’em like crazy (morrisp), Tuesday, 9 October 2018 20:51 (five years ago) link

Come on, who wouldn’t want to hear a cleverly updated We Care A Lot for today’s world of #metoo and alt-right?

Siegbran, Tuesday, 9 October 2018 20:54 (five years ago) link

I'm not a huge fan or anything but credit where credit is due for putting out something as strange and abrasive as Angel Dust at the height of their fame, that is a really weird record

they had 18 years of extreme popularity, there was no chance they would miss out.

RHCP has a much better claim to the RR HOF than the Journeys of the world.

Re: The Cure — there are very few “cool”/alternative bands from the ‘80s in the hall, and I don’t think any from Britain other than the Police (if they can be considered “cool”) and Clash? No Smiths, etc.

The Smiths I can understand though, if only because they broke up too soon. The Cure played Dodger Stadium in ‘89. Surely one of the most influential bands ever... very surprised.

DEVO

gman59, Tuesday, 9 October 2018 21:01 (five years ago) link

Are Depeche Mode in yet? They seem inevitable.

Siegbran, Tuesday, 9 October 2018 21:14 (five years ago) link

No they are not

brush ’em like crazy (morrisp), Tuesday, 9 October 2018 21:16 (five years ago) link

I'm tellin ya, there are no "cool" bands from the '80s other than a handful of New Wavers/CBGBers/'70s holdovers (Ramones, Clash, Talking Heads, Blondie, Cars); a few U.S./Brit hybrid bands (Police, Pretenders); R.E.M.; and RHCP.

brush ’em like crazy (morrisp), Tuesday, 9 October 2018 21:19 (five years ago) link

Oh and U2, I guess (if they're "cool")

brush ’em like crazy (morrisp), Tuesday, 9 October 2018 21:26 (five years ago) link

c'mon guys, we all know there was no rock and roll in the 80s. It was the end of the innocence, after all.

Roxy all the way. Never made a bad record; gave us Chic and tonnes of punk / post-punk bands; also counts as a vote for Eno.

Kraftwerk, I love them and they are more objectively influential but they never made anything as heartstoppingly perfect as Mother of Pearl or If There Is Something - in my opinion anyway.

The Cure should have stopped years ago and haven't made a record in ten years the lazy fuckers. What's theur excuse? Robert Smith is at leadt technically alive. The "Bob pissed in his kitchen playing with Cubase on a laptop" affair that was Mixed Up II doesn't count.

Lemon Kitten (Dan.S.), Tuesday, 9 October 2018 22:26 (five years ago) link

ILX knows what I think of Roxy, but they didn't give us Chic. Chic borrowed presentational concepts.

Lol, your argument for Roxy sealed the deal imo! (also a vote for Chic and Eno).

God, I can't believe Zappa's in the HoF. He sort of breaks all the usual induction rules, right? A pure cult figure, not a big unit-mover or stadium-filler. He's not even really a "critical favorite"!

brush ’em like crazy (morrisp), Tuesday, 9 October 2018 22:32 (five years ago) link

The Cure will never be voted in in my lifetime, they are far to weird. I do give the hall props for actually nominating them after all these years.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 9 October 2018 22:34 (five years ago) link

First time they have appeared

Bee OK, Tuesday, 9 October 2018 22:35 (five years ago) link

The little write-ups of each inductee on the RRHOF website are the absolute worst:

NOT EVERYONE BOUGHT THEIR ALBUM, BUT EVERYONE WHO DID STARTED A BAND.

The Velvet Underground was literary but down to earth, schooled in both highbrow culture and the streets. They wrote about life as they saw it — drugs and all — but they saw the beauty in bleakness.

Drugs and all, you guys!

"the streets"

can we discuss those dashes

"I do give the hall props for"

Is "the hall" really deserving of props? Has it done not more bad than good, by simply existing?

Lol @ the idea that it is genuinely surprising that the RRHOF, whose founders include Ertegun and Wenner, has not yet inducted the Cure or Depeche Mode.

That Velvets performance is so goddamn poignant. I don't care that it's a dandelion puff of a song. Their grief bound them together.

You like queer? I like queer. Still like queer. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 9 October 2018 22:53 (five years ago) link

I tell myself I don't care about the rnrhof but I can't help but pull for some of my favorite bands. None of my favorite bands are nominated this year though, where are Depeche Mode and Sonic Youth?

Anyway, out of these I feel like Def Leppard and rage against the machine should be in mostly because I feel like they both did their specific thing much better that their contemporaries.

silverfish, Tuesday, 9 October 2018 23:27 (five years ago) link

oh and Roxy Music which seems like a ridiculous omission (so far) even going by the weird standards of the hof

silverfish, Tuesday, 9 October 2018 23:30 (five years ago) link

Not really. They were non-existent as commercial presences in the States.

You like queer? I like queer. Still like queer. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 9 October 2018 23:30 (five years ago) link

Tbf Avalon went platinum in the US, and Country Life, Siren, and Manifesto made the top 40. They certainly had a different profile in the States compared to Europe though.

Josefa, Tuesday, 9 October 2018 23:56 (five years ago) link

The thing is, it seems when Brits think of Roxy Music it's their first three albums that come to mind, all of which were duds in the US

Josefa, Wednesday, 10 October 2018 00:00 (five years ago) link

No, I'm aware of their commercial performances in the States, and the rate at which Avalon got certified adduces the way it gradually sold and sold through the 1980s; but their American airplay during the 1970s consists of hot spots: Detroit, Boston, Philadelphia. They had no national presence at all. Ferry also lacked Bowie's interest in courting hostile American press but getting headlines anyway and Bowie's protean instincts.

i say we should get it over with and induct every musical act in history into the rock and roll hall of fame

dub pilates (rushomancy), Wednesday, 10 October 2018 01:33 (five years ago) link

You have a lot of faith in the Cleveland hospitality industry to absorb all those visitors for the induction ceremony.
