splitting heads hairs imo

You like queer? I like queer. Still like queer. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 9 October 2018 20:21 (one year ago) link

you're either into his super slow mutated sense of pacing or not tbh, it's not really more complicated than that

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Tuesday, 9 October 2018 20:35 (one year ago) link

The slowness of Mandy wasn't a problem. It does have a peculiar way of leaving in slack moments which most movies would cut, and uses tons of slow fades where most movies would have a hard cut. This worked really well in the creeping ambience of the first half. The slightly more tedious moments for me were the less visually compelling ones, like the visit to the pharmacist in the radio tower.

jmm, Tuesday, 9 October 2018 20:45 (one year ago) link

That felt like a nod to the eye clinic in Blade Runner to me. But it didn't quite pull off the febrile deranged feeling he was clearly shooting for.

pls someone let Cosmatos take over on the new Dune movies

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Tuesday, 9 October 2018 23:41 (one year ago) link

this was super agonizing to watch, very few parts i enjoyed (such as chainsaw battle), would not do it again

did you go to the cinema though

My Gig: The Thin Beast (sic), Wednesday, 10 October 2018 01:09 (one year ago) link

i've seen it twice now, once in cinema and once not in cinema, and i don't like going to the theatre but i'd argue it's kinda necessary for that movie

vote no on ilxit (Will M.), Wednesday, 10 October 2018 03:15 (one year ago) link

Still waiting with increasing irritation for literally any theater in the sixth-largest city in the United States to get this. We had one host the one-night premiere, which I blew off for something else since the same email said "opening September 14," but since then the only option has been a 90-minute round trip to Bethlehem, PA.

after being extended a week here, it's being brought back tomorrow after a week off: get a cheap flight to Seattle, I'll go see it again.

hasn't been mentioned yet, i don't think, but the soundtrack rules. the last work of Jóhann Jóhannsson. i especially liked the black metal snippets, like when Red is going down the tunnel toward Jeremiah.

was mentioned in other threads' discussion before Brad sensibly split this one off

"Amulet of the Weeping Maze" is song of the year.

jmm, Wednesday, 10 October 2018 21:19 (one year ago) link

yes i saw it in the cinema, if this was on a tv i would have just turned it off lol

forensic plumber (harbl), Wednesday, 10 October 2018 23:06 (one year ago) link

Oh yeah, there's a song from Red and the character's name is Red. I understand this movie now.

did not enjoy "beyond the black rainbow", but i was going to take a shot on this

sadly looks like tonight will be the last showing here, in theory i could drive to LA but it's only showing at midnight there. does that mean it's not doing so well?

the late great, Friday, 12 October 2018 03:58 (one year ago) link

the original release was one night only, so it's been doing great

My Gig: The Thin Beast (sic), Friday, 12 October 2018 07:53 (one year ago) link

Has been brought back to the AFI Silver for at least one more week; have a ticket for tonight.

RLJ Entertainment, known for releasing genre movies ("Brawl in Cell Block 99," "Bone Tomahawk") and has handled movies starring Cage in the past ("Rage," "Dog Eat Dog," "Pay the Ghost"), moved forward with the usual game plan for "Mandy."

They released it in 75 theaters its first week, and had Cosmatos, Cage, and costar Linus Roache show up for live Q&As following some special Thursday-night screenings before its opening weekend, the hope being that exposure and the 94% Rotten Tomatoes score the movie has would bring in the audiences that a limited marketing budget a day-and-date movie can't.

And boy did it work.

And then something unusual happened: Instead of people ordering the movie on VOD, they took to social media and demanded a wider release so that "Mandy" could open at a theater near them.

violent incidents that aren't in Mandy

i think this is my favorite movie of the year. is it insane to hope that it gets oscar consideration? cage, Riseborough, director, cinematographer....all deserve some recognition.

akm, Sunday, 14 October 2018 19:13 (one year ago) link

also i like to think of the two blonde cult members as 'slack jawed yokel 1 and slack jawed yokel 2'

lol I liked this movie but no thanks

circa1916, Sunday, 14 October 2018 22:48 (one year ago) link

Yeah I can see the result being interesting, but Cosmatos’ style works best on a smaller scale IMO. Plus we already have the Lynch Dune.

Peter Travers of Rolling Stone calls Mandy 'a hoot, a real old-fashioned good-timey romp! See it with your best gal's ma!'

Kinda feel like there's a stain on my soul now that I can never fully scour away. Fuckin' evil. Deeply admire the commitment to pulling zero punches. Not sure I ever need to see it again. Fairly sure I will nonetheless see it again soon.

Extra Shprankles (Old Lunch), Monday, 15 October 2018 01:51 (one year ago) link

(I joked that Cosmatos wanted to drop an isolated slice of cinema verite into the proceedings and asked Cage to go through his usual morning bathroom routine while the cameras rolled.)

Extra Shprankles (Old Lunch), Monday, 15 October 2018 01:55 (one year ago) link

Also: looking for recommendations of other films that exude unrelenting cosmic darkness (Possession is as far as I've gotten thus far).

Extra Shprankles (Old Lunch), Monday, 15 October 2018 01:57 (one year ago) link

I'd say THE WITCH is pretty good at that

an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Monday, 15 October 2018 02:05 (one year ago) link

I’ll throw in my usual recommendation of The Lords Of Salem.

grawlix (unperson), Monday, 15 October 2018 02:54 (one year ago) link

I also recommend STARRY EYES.

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Monday, 15 October 2018 02:58 (one year ago) link

I must be drawn to cosmic darkness as I've seen all three! It occurred while watching that it reminded me of nothing quite so much as Twin Peaks: The Return.

Introduced my Mandy crew to Outer Space sometime just before we watched the former. You could say it was a day for feel-good cinema, I suppose.

Extra Shprankles (Old Lunch), Monday, 15 October 2018 10:30 (one year ago) link

the pacing is certainly TP:Return-esque.

akm, Monday, 15 October 2018 13:19 (one year ago) link

Bits of this kept reminding me of Apocalypse Now. Don't ask me to justify that comparison.

jmm, Monday, 15 October 2018 13:31 (one year ago) link

Are you referring to the nightmare quest elements of both movies, or the way Nicolas Cage long ago went Marlon Brando-scale batshit crazy?

Accattony! Accattoni! Accattoné! (j.lu), Monday, 15 October 2018 14:03 (one year ago) link

starry eyes is imo extremely flawed and very traumatic but a real ride

can’t stop thinking about cage’s totally scraped-out stare at the end of this film, which might be the peak of his craft for me

welcome to the spoiler-filled thread about mandy ross

princess of hell (BradNelson), Wednesday, 17 October 2018 15:48 (one year ago) link

I'm not sure that it's much of a spoiler. It's advertised as a revenge movie.

jmm, Wednesday, 17 October 2018 15:50 (one year ago) link

Yeah, I was trying to explain to someone that even a spoiler-laden description of the basic plot wouldn't really tell you much and certainly wouldn't prepare you for the experience.

Extra Shprankles (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 17 October 2018 16:00 (one year ago) link

yeah it's completely spoiler-proof imho

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Wednesday, 17 October 2018 16:04 (one year ago) link

no one in this thread at least has spoiled the most important part of the movie, which rhymes with “header cobblin’”

princess of hell (BradNelson), Wednesday, 17 October 2018 16:07 (one year ago) link

lol

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Wednesday, 17 October 2018 16:08 (one year ago) link

Yeah, it's perhaps worth noting that for such an oppressively dark movie, there are more than a few lols to be had.

Extra Shprankles (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 17 October 2018 16:16 (one year ago) link

OMG what if Mandy's demon bikers are just Cobra's axe-clanking cultists after thirty years of drug-induced mutation? I don't care if it's incoherent, I declare it to be so.

Welcome To My Lifemare (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 25 September 2019 14:47 (one month ago) link

cobra is definitely batshit in a not-entirely-dissimilar way to mandy but its derangement is based in hyper-reaganite leather-glove-fetishism instead of melted psychedelic drone

really love the whole story about cage insisting that he play red

Well, when I first met with Panos, he told me he wanted me to play Jeremiah Sand, and I said, “Why?” And he said, “Well, I see him as the California Klaus Kinski.” And I said, “Well, I am the California Klaus Kinski, but I want to play Red.” ... I did not want to play Jeremiah Sand. I felt that I had gone through enough life experience. Not that I can’t work from the imagination, I normally do, but I had enough life experience contending the failure of my third marriage and still trying to recover from the loss of my father after many, many years. Still not just quite over it. As I look at these footnotes here from the talking points that coincide with Panos himself, that I … having had experiences with loss, certainly family loss, I was in step with that.
I felt I could play Red authentically and organically and put those feelings of loss in a productive place as opposed to a destructive place, and a constructive place. And so, that’s why I gravitated towards Red. I just felt that I could go after the cult and the demon bikers in a way that was in his world, but had some sort of sound of truth.

This is why I love Nic Cage and why this movie really works. There’s such a genuine core of raw emotion underneath the fantastical trappings
