As I look back with the clarity of hindsight, I am convinced that coded racial appeals had at least as much, if not more, to do with the electoral success of the modern GOP than all of the policy proposals crafted by well-intentioned analysts like me. https://t.co/qIvBAPVhna

"There's no 'Dark Side of American Conservatism', really. Matter of fact, it's all dark."

Ubering With The King (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 9 October 2018 05:02 (five years ago) link

even in his mea culpa he's a fucking dumbass

Most Republicans in Congress voted in 1964 and 1965 for landmark civil rights legislation, but not Goldwater. In his 1960 bestseller “The Conscience of a Conservative,” Goldwater wrote that “the federal Constitution does not require the states to maintain racially mixed schools.” Goldwater was not personally a racist — he had integrated the Arizona Air National Guard — but, like his GOP successors, he was happy to make common cause with racists in order to wrest the South from the Democrats.

Goldwater was just as extreme when it came to foreign affairs. He suggested that Americans needed to overcome their “craven fear of death.” If the Soviets intervened to crush another uprising in Eastern Europe, like the one in Hungary in 1956, he wanted “to move a highly mobile task force equipped with appropriate nuclear weapons to the scene of the revolt.” I used to think Goldwater’s reputation as an extremist was a liberal libel. Reading his actual words — something I had not done before — reveals that he really was an extremist.

this guy should have a blog where every week he reads the actual words of some conservative icon he's been praising to the skies, and then is shocked, shocked to discover right-wing extremism and racist dog-whistling going on here.

The paid D.C. protesters are now ready to REALLY protest because they haven’t gotten their checks - in other words, they weren’t paid! Screamers in Congress, and outside, were far too obvious - less professional than anticipated by those paying (or not paying) the bills!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 9, 2018

good point, where the hell is my god damn check Soros

frogbs, Tuesday, 9 October 2018 13:18 (five years ago) link

Shelling out good money on protestors seems like an investment with a pretty poor rate of return but I suppose President Deals understand business better than I.

Werther Down the Spiral (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 9 October 2018 13:25 (five years ago) link

uh it's an incredibly good deal if you just stiff 'em which President Deals knows a lot about

frogbs, Tuesday, 9 October 2018 13:29 (five years ago) link

Is he getting this idea just from their responding "No, we aren't paid"?

jmm, Tuesday, 9 October 2018 13:47 (five years ago) link

Well u see, from inside the mind of a Donald Trump where Donald Trump exists at the world's center, it is unthinkable that anyone might legitimately and openly despise Donald Trump, and the only explanation for such expressions is that some evil zillionaire has slipped a cool hundo into the pockets of staunch Trumpists and forced them very against their will to bite their lips and choke back tears as they spout seditious credos which run counter to their deep and abiding love for the Donald. It is the only explanation.

Werther Down the Spiral (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 9 October 2018 14:02 (five years ago) link

Soros bided his time and waited until the American public was truly exhausted from their streak of unabated winning, one might even say altogether sick of it, and then he pounced.

She wants to preserve her "brand" in the hopes of a 2020 primary run, I suspect. She's quite well-liked by what remains of #NeverTrump.

xp!

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 9 October 2018 14:15 (five years ago) link

so these hopeful primary challengers are banking on the dems taking the house and uncovering some bad, bad stuff?

i don't really see a republican primary challenge to trump getting any more than, say, kasich got in the 2016 primary.

Eh, as much as I entertain any theory, I kinda wonder if 'the establishment' as such has such has gotten what they wanted out of Trump and are content to let him twist in the wind from here on in.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 9 October 2018 14:20 (five years ago) link

i go back and forth on that sometimes but right now I'm pretty firmly in the camp of believing that "the establishment" is utterly terrified of Trump's base and will do nothing to incur their wrath. this is mostly based on the disgusting level of bootlicking that so many 2018 candidates are displaying wrt Daddy Trump.

evol j, Tuesday, 9 October 2018 14:26 (five years ago) link

primary run against trump in 2020 would also be a good move for someone who has crackpot advisers telling them that a third-party bloomberg conservative could really do gangbusters in 2024. or some bizarre scenario where an extremely moronic Dem wins the nom in 2020 and is looking to construct a centrist fusion ticket for the general. or something. i mean it's the kiss of death if you ever want to run as just a plain old republican again, you'll never make it out of the primaries.

any Republican who challenges Trump in 2020 will be hated forever be the base
Haley and others will wait for 2024 and hope to be the return to sanity candidate

President Keyes, Tuesday, 9 October 2018 14:35 (five years ago) link

by the base

President Keyes, Tuesday, 9 October 2018 14:35 (five years ago) link

pols often think of themselves as exceptional, and Haley may be in that group

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 9 October 2018 14:39 (five years ago) link

We may have to wait until 11/7 to see which way the wind blows the conviction-free weathervanes of the GOP re: their alignment with Trump. They may be afeared of the base now but that could change if the election results give them a sense of their impending obsolescence. Or the results might encourage them to double down on their investment in evil. Who can say. Anything is possible!

Werther Down the Spiral (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 9 October 2018 14:48 (five years ago) link

Ive hoped that if trump ever gets the curbjob he deserves “his” base will get cut by 2/3 and the leavers will pretend they always knew what an evil dipshit he was.

ha ~a lot~ has to happen for me to live my dream. I also predicted pre-inaug that, one way or another, he wouldnt finish his term so...

Nikki Haley has been a clear, consistent, and powerful voice for America’s interests and democratic principles on the world stage. She challenged friend and foe to be better. I am saddened that she is leaving the administration, but so grateful for her service. Thank you, Nikki.
